From some links posted, there's virus being expelled through breath and talking alone. If you were caught in the middle of two people shouting across at each other from their metres apart, you could potentially end up in an invisible virus cloud, if one of them is infected.

They have said, if advised, it will not be mandatory. Can't say I've ever been in your what if scenario. What are the odds of being infected that way?

You've yet to explain your point of working while wearing one? Does this give the respirator a powerup? Mine already have the go faster stripes.

Thank you for the posts however, it really illustrated the point I made a few days ago that people cannot distinguish between HSE and medical experts talking about the protection provided by basic disposable masks and medical or industrial certified masks designed to protect the wearer. Even when the point was made clearly 3 posts before yours, you still missed it. But sure we can't be expecting people to read what was actually said or inform themselves before sharing their hot takes.

I was caught in this situation twice during the past week. One in work and one in a shop.

I don't know what the odds are of being infected in such a way.

I do think people are getting too relaxed about not keeping the two metres apart. I had someone come up and breath down my neck in the shop the other day. I swear to do god. I had to pull back because she was too wreck less to keep her distance.

TBH I'd challenge that myself in a shop, but rapid passing in a shop or on a narrow path outside I'm inclined to see the risk as minute and even in that work situation I wouldn't be concerned.

Basically RTE are saying they think it is okay for the State to delay advising or recommmending masks for the public until the State has stock piled enough for themselves.

The original advice is still the best for stopping the spread. They should add to it and say don't look people in the face in a pandemic. You don't want to be in the firing line of a sneeze or cough.
Your eyes aren't protected with a mask and it can enter through them. It also hangs around on a mask so your constantly breathing it in.
There really only for medical high risk settings and there's no evidence of that being Lidl or Aldi.

They do not prevent the spread. Nobody claims that. It reduces spread and that so significantly. Even if you're in line in a cough/sneeze/breath as opposed to be in line with no mask.

Preventing spread would need a nanofibre filter inside, perfect fit, perfect putting on, perfect removal, perfect discipline etc. There's some gap here, some there and it's cumulative, you can never get 100% protection. But overall even if you get to 60-70% effectiveness that's better than 0% - much lower viral load. On population level it makes a huge difference, it reduces the spread.

Vaccine is needed to get away with masks, social distancing, and lockdowns to get to normality not because of masks don't work...

I was in Lidl the other day and was as bad as hospital. 70 people inside, not respecting distancing at all, coughing etc, it's a risk environment!

I bought a fabric/reusable face mask from etsy. It's cotton with a filter a pocket. I gave it a wash last week and it dried. With the news from England about a requirement for masks in certain situations, I think Ireland will be going down the same path.

I decided to try on my mask. Just to see how it would feel. I then decided to wear it around the house for a few minutes like wearing it going to the jacks.

I'm not going to lie. It's actually a little bit of a heavy wear and I don't have any filter in it yet. It would be OK to put it on outside a shop, and motor around a shop but that's about it. It would be very hard to wear on a bus especially on a hot day. On a wet, humid day as well would be another time where it will be hard to wear on a bus.

The mask is a bit warm. I got about 10 minutes wear from it before I had to take it off my face.

That can be one downside. What is it made from?

I have made a cotton one and it feels fantastic, could wear it all day.

It's a cotton mask. It looks like a muslin cotton material but I could be wrong. I got 25 minutes out from wearing it and I had to pull it off my face.

If you have 70% ethanol/IPA, you can spray it over the mask and it can be re-used. I know that you can also "boil" the material masks, but I'm not sure how a mask like that would hold up

At least you have one mask sorted for the time being, as time goes on and the situation with availability improves you'll hopefully be able to secure a more comfortable one

The mask was comfortable. It has a nose wire for moulding on the bridge of the nose. The ear straps didn't hurt. It was relatively comfortable but it felt warm and heavy on the face.
