Pub association has put forward a request today to start operating 6 weeks ahead of 10th of August. With strict hygiene, social distancing measures.

Anyone wants to guess if they ll be successful? I'd say they won't be allowed, government will make an example out of them. And that is a big shame, but very much in line with the ridiculousness of whats happening anyway.

    Thoughts?

It will all balance on debate. If Heather Humphreys gets to put pressure on the the pubs will open quicker than August. But its all dependant on when the economic catastrophe looming get's some consideration by the 3 in charge, and that wont happen without debate

Yea i'm sure the multi millionaire Charlie Chalk would lov to see one of his many pubs openining and his staff being paid minimum wage..

Not sure if there's an association for the ordinary pub workers? I would like to hear from them first before all the landlords...

My local barber is open, you need to make an appointment and he has his blinds down so people can't see inside.

I know people won't be happy to hear that but I say fair play to him we need to get this country back up and running.

Imagine the guards raiding a barbers and arresting people for getting their haircut...

This has been coming but the virus and the lockdown has escalated it
I regularly warn people trump is just mad enough to pull the trigger

    https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2020/0504/1136374-pharma-trump-ireland-coronavirus-vaccine/

They will want access to eu through Ireland so will keep a presence but trump wants R and D back in the USA
American companies like Abbott and west pharma etc will come under serious pressure to invest back home
We lose any big pharma over next few years we are goosed

    Time to open up now
bit of a non sequitur there?

He was in a FG coalition minster for agriculture in the mid 90s and one of the worst in that position. His own business went bust. And he is the most loud mouthed brocaster on tv who never listens only talks over everyone. Tell me how he is successful?

He was elected as the youngest ever TD, rose swiftly to become minister for agriculture during one of the most difficult times for irish farmers.

He was successful in every election he contested.

He resigned from politics on his own terms.

Tell me how he was a failed politician?

Love human nature. Just so human isnt it to completely disregard Leo's waffle from late late and get on with your work and life.

I think that purely because of this individual we can be safely assured that the common sense will prevail. Anything else and you ll have barbers wearing astronaut protective costume trying to cut your hair.

If numbers taper off in the next week or two it will be a no brainer.

Will it be viable for pubs to open is another matter.

Directly from NPHET minutes of 14th of April meeting

There is anecdotal evidence and the number of presentations indicating that patients are reluctant to attend the acute setting for non-COVID care. The importance of ensuring a strong focus on continued delivery of non-COVID care was underlined by the NPHET. The ongoing collaboration of DOH and other
stakeholders to optimise the utilisation of all available capacity nationally for the continued delivery of COVID-care and non-COVID care was welcomed by the NPHET.

What in the gods name is this. Anecdotal? A bit of humour about people not attending hospitals for their chest pains etc being scared of contracting covid19 from RTEs fear mongering?

They are trying to "utilise" all available capacity of empty hospitals yet its anecdotally clear that people do not want to go there. What a waste of resources. And this stuff is from mid April..

Lots of legal professionals would disagree with you

Eh? Do you just throw random unsubstantiated claims out there and hope some of them will stick? A good legal professional could claim that black was white...it wouldn't make it correct.

Great to hear that barber story. Only way we can crush this mind numbing inane nanny state rubbish is by people getting on with their lives and work and basically ignoring it from here on. And let the Gardai raid the lot

I wonder if any of Gardai members have second thoughts about what they are doing though. I mean they went through serious training and screening before being accepted into Gardai, now they are stopping cyclists with milk in shopping bags and enquiring as to direction, location of residence and purpose of the milk. sad.

Of course I do, its unsubstantiated claims sticking that has Ireland in the longest lockdown in Europe.
If Luke O Neill can guffaw unsubstantiated rubbish on the public service broadcaster you can bet I'll feel entitled to do likewise

I don't think many seem to to be taking that long term pragmatic view conscious of the sledge hammer they've taken to public good will going forward. "We were just following orders". Of course you were.
Wonder what public support for any pay claim they may have in future will be like? Of course you'll get a cohort of sheep who think stopping people going to a beach or going for a 10 km cycle is a wonderful concept and a good use of borrowed money. But I'm sure there are many sensible people out there who don't.

Why is everyone giving out about the cops doing their jobs?
Nobody likes the restrictions, nobody wants the cops stopping the public but they are under instruction to do so.
We all want to get back to work, its not happening for a while. There are restrictions in place. Obey them. It helps to stop the spread. It's not rocket science.

Leo's assessment of Dr Tony's strategy:

Ireland's attitude to the coronavirus battle is the same one we apply to the Eurovision: no matter how far down the board we are as long we are doing better than England we still feel like we're winning.

It's amazing. You've got a great gift for deflecting anything directed at you. Rather than defend yourself, you change the subject and spin it to suit your narrative.

Imagine being that utterly sad that you cant manage without a haircut for a few weeks. I can empathise with single fathers (or mothers) who haven’t seen their kids, Grandparents who haven’t seen anyone, or people with companies that have slaved for years to build them up / families in tiny houses and no gardens, I can’t understand their need to push the boundaries of the rules, but if you can’t cope without a haircut for a few weeks then your are nothing other than a class A bell end.

It had to be Dublin as well, the capital of narcissistic self entitled clowns.

I think it isnt about defending owns statement. A fact remains that Ireland will have on the 9th of August, longest lockdown for restaurants etc. on the whole planet.

Only way to disprove is it to say oh hey, look at Madagascar, they locked up their restaurant staff for 7 months because of fears of 0.65% mortality rate disease. It would be funny if true, but it isnt true. No one comes even close to our 5 months effective lockdown thats the painful thing :(:(:(

id guess propably every town in ireland by now has few barbers garages and other places doing job off side, you do realize some people still work every day, and have to look presentable, not everyone hides in a corner like a little b%tch thinking it will go away once government says so.

Don't worry, it sounds made up. Any guard worth their salt would have heard of this and shut it down quickly.

The Guards have done a good job balancing trying to enforce the restrictions while not being too heavy handed. A few mistakes, but nothing as bad as some of the UK forces.

This thread is full of Trumpian extremists - it would be nice to have a thread where we could discuss how we realistically open up safely over the next few weeks.
