I made a comment on the last thread regarding a supermarket a member of my family runs and that there has been no staff off at this point at anytime with illness. That comment was only as a point towards negativetivity other than anything else. Up to today no member of staff is off sick. Could be a case there is no virus propagating in the area or there is and who knows. Just a point towards supermarkets and the threat of getting sick. There has to be some sense of realisim at some point where we decide what the future is. As we get out of this combined with testing and contact tracing and risk assessements we can decide how we open the country. My point was only that at this time, this specific supermarket is currently doing well as in all the staff are without Covid in an environment that we all fear it.

Very much would like to highlight this post. So I did.

Yep, and he isn't the only poster to confirm similar situation in other supermarkets. We haven't heard of supermarket staff getting the virus in their droves, and one would think that they would if it was easy to catch by breath..

    I've been nothing but civil.
    Projection?

I concede there is a vaccine for the flu which would reduce its mortality. Unmitigated in terms of no lockdown of course is what i mean.

So vaccine plus unmitigated flu vs no vaccine plus unmitigated Coronavirus.
WHO conservatively estimates at least one order of magnitude difference in mortality

You're choosing the lowest figure (there could be several reasons for this. A more benign strain in Germany? who knows: If you insist on criticizing me quoting other countries, have you done a thorough analysis on the German figures: strain, reporting, etc etc).

Leaving aside the niceties of denominators, why are economies ground to a halt. Why are hospital systems paralysed (even with mitigation).

    I've not done any studies

I've merely pointed out that there are no definitive figures for the true rarity rate yet

Wait a year or so and the data will be there and validated

And calm down you sound almost hysterical, our hospital system is not paralysed as of yet

You need to read more closely. They said hospital systems, not our hospital system. There are many hospital systems crippled across the world and that cannot be contested.

I like to think I lean towards optimism but these people who think we've just got to get through 'another 6 weeks' of this aren't really getting it, are they?

If you only allow freight in, how would that work with the truck driver, he has to self isolate in his cabin before making his delivery? Freight doesn't magically just arrive in the distribution centers.
I'm not talking about freight FFS.

If people wanted to come in, they can just arrive via the border up north. How are they planning on preventing that?

Exactly. Now you're asking the right questions.

Several babies in Kildare have tested positive for Covid 19.

Nationally, 16 babies have tested positive and over half of cases are in Dublin.

Cork, Kildare, Wicklow and Meath have the highest number after that.

And, over 2,000 healthcare workers have now tested positive for Covid 19.

HSE figures show there are currently 117 outbreaks in nursing homes.

It was a long technical conversation , much of which was lost on me

He figured at best we might get 4-6 months immunity from any vaccine and it will nit be the “ cure all “ we are hoping for.

I wasn't doubting his knowledge at all

But if the vaccine doesn't work long term, we're just left with Herd Immunity right?

Why are people making such an issue over the leaving cert?
The option was the best they could do, the students have got full marks in orals and an extra month or two to study.

Predicted grades would be a disaster. What if the teacher wasn’t a fan of yours , what if you’d sub teachers for a while who didn’t know your ability.

    People love to moan.

I don't agree with predicted grades either but were you born 40?
They are young, this is the probably best year of their life so far,
last year at school with their mates Grad night, pre debs, LC, Debs, LC holiday, earning their own money, College/apprenticeships etc..
if you can't remember being young (or are pretending not to)at least try have a bit of empathy.
You cant put an old head on young shoulders, and you shouldn't want to.

Eh, no. The reason they've so many cases is because they're testing more than anyone else in the World (presumably also as a result of Donald Trump).

Infectious diseases expert Dr Paddy Mallon tweeted: ‘Ferries are allowed to bring people from Britain UK to Ireland for hols this weekend. UK are Britain is swamped with #COVID19 – we are in lockdown. Makes no sense.’ Cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan responded: ‘I don’t understand why our Government are allowing this to happen. They have introduced measures to stop Irish people travelling to holiday homes, which is the correct decision, yet they are still allowing people in from Britain the UK. This is pure madness.’ She added: ‘This is not about deliveries coming in from the Britain UK, in trucks which must continue to come in.

‘This is about holidaymakers coming in.’ Retired Department of Agriculture employee John O’Hea, from Ballincollig, Co. Cork, said parts of West Cork and Kerry had experienced a recent rise in the numbers of English cars travelling to holiday homes.

‘I worked for the department during the foot and mouth and the bird flu outbreaks, and all travel from outside the State from infected areas was stopped,’ he said.

‘I am absolutely gobsmacked to hear people are still arriving through ports and airports…I believe myself that if we don’t crack down on this immediately, the virus will never end.’ Poet and lecturer Colette Colfer shared her concerns on Twitter.

Adjustments made to the above ...
Dr Paddy Mallon is obviously not a doctor of geography. We cannot close the borders to the UK as it would involve closing our land border, we could however close our sea & air border with Great Britain (if we needed to stop the influx of British tourists).

Russia's issues are accelerating after they reported 1,667 new cases and 12 new deaths yesterday.

    From the Guardian live blog
The Kremlin have warned that Moscow’s hospitals are under strain after a “huge influx” of coronavirus cases.

    Meanwhile...
The World Health Organisation have warned that Belarus must take further action to combat coronavirus, as they enter a new phase of infection. Belarus are still hosting football games, and their President, Alexander Lukashenko, has downplayed restrictive measures. In recent weeks, he has said that drinking vodka and bathing in saunas could help fight the virus.

I have been nothing but civil and pleasant. Please provide evidence otherwise.

I'm actually surprised you're a mod here. I see at least one other person has expressed a similar sentiment.

I agree there are no definitive figures for its rarity. That's why i asked you if a twelvefold discrepancy in the denominators (because that's what it is) is believable. I haven't received an answer from you.

I find a twelvefold difference in denominators less believable and compelling than the reality of politicians shutting down their precious economies and paralysed hospital systems. Probably something more compelling behind that i'd say.

Did i say our hospital system specifically is currently paralysed (only not currently paralysed because of severe mitigation).
Many hospital systems have been. Are you in denial about this.

We'll see how it pans out (with severe mitigation and a bit of luck maybe not so badly)

You're wrong because you listen to what that man says. Never listen to what that man says.

    Stick with the facts

    https://www.vox.com/2020/4/10/21214218/trump-coronavirus-testing-social-distancing
As of April 6, Quest Diagnostics, one of the largest private testing facilities in the US, still had a backlog of roughly 80,000 tests as it faces more demand than it can handle. Adjusted for population, the US has tested at just 74 percent the rate of South Korea — where widespread testing has been credited with containing the country’s outbreak — and is even further behind Germany, Italy, and Canada.

It was only 9 years ago I did my Leaving Cert so I don’t think I’m considered old yet. The leaving cert is being held a month or two later it’s not major, in the grand scheme of things. I would like to think I have empathy but I don’t think what’s happening with the leaving cert is worse case scenario. They’ve full marks in their orals and are now getting the chance to take their leaving cert a bit later. It’s as fair as they can make it in the current circumstances.
