A targeted ad on social media suggested this today. I thought it looked really cool but does the price tag reflect itself? You are in secondhand Omega territory there.

    A bit busy for me.

But I'm very curious about what happens if you tell the watch you need food and water?

It's unusually expensive - more than the inherent watch justifies - because it's a limited 30th anniversary model. The price tags on these type of anniversary things never really make sense, unless you're very much into the brand.

If it's just the overall look that you like, there's no shortage of Promaster Sky watches for a lot less. With similar aesthetics, bracelet style etc. €500 would buy you something pretty nice, maybe not with GPS sync but certainly with radio sync.

I'm only linking to the HK site because they have the Promaster Sky grouped together but you can see the CC7014 is way more expensive than most of them.

    https://www.citizen.com.hk/html/en/products/promaster/?from=Sky

Something like the CB5000 is €500 or less in Europe.

Nice watch but it's a Sumo so no chance of it appearing in a store in Dublin. As for getting a good deal this will be anywhere between $800-$1500 and when they sell out values will climb like all the other blacked out Seiko's.

Sumo got an upgraded movement the 6R35 with a 70 hour power reserve, so the whole range has gone up in price. There is even a nice looking solar chronograph Sumo SSC757 and SSC759.

always dashing my hopes. you need to come back with a suitcase full of watches.

If I was spending €500 I'd go to Tissot in my local mall and get something I think. Or keep saving and get a nice used Longines or something. I'd rightly thought Citizen was a more mainstream and inexpensive brand, hence my curiosity as to was it a justified price.

Okay, I misread your post, I assumed you were thinking of pulling the trigger ! :D

Citizen make some expensive stuff - high accuracy quartz etc. I saw something recently for $17k. Most of their line-up is sub €1000, or even sub €500. If you're into quartz they make some very nice stuff but most watch enthusiasts are not (into quartz). The build quality and surface treatments of their titanium cases and bracelets on some stuff around €500-1000 compares very well with swiss brands priced a lot more.

No way. I have a family friend back in Ireland who deals in jewellery and used watches, I'd give him a budget of similar and I would get something much tastier. Wife wants something first though.

I have completely fallen for this watch. But it's quartz. I really really wish there was a mechanical version.
Eugh...to jump or not to jump. £395 is not a bad price.

Finally ordered the watch that got me looking at watches again. Should be here in 15-30 days.. Damn thing has to go through an intermediary in America and then over to Vietnam.

I'm so bad when it comes to purchases sometimes. That took months and it's not even because I'm tight. SNXF05. Good thing it's cheap.. Haven't worked in over five weeks.

The first payment messed up so I paid again with the refund for the first one coming later. Then the second payment works and the watch is out of stock. Told them to just keep it and wait for it to be in.

    Balls.

Genuinely curious about this one. If you love the watch why does it matter if its quartz?

Ive only recently taken an interest in watches, outside of just buying one I liked at the time, and it feels like there's a snobbery around quartz vs auto.

Not saying you personally but wondering. Is it a case of that or more just an appreciation of an automatic movement?

From a vanity point of view.. Buying quartz on my first watches let me get the watches that looked great for a fraction of the price.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,068 ✭✭✭Trigger Happy

Its a personal thing I suppose.
That watch does not have a sweep second or sub second hand. I prefer the sweep. Much smoother and more classical chrono IMO.
I have about 5 quartz watches and changing the batteries in rotation is a pain in the hoop.
I much prefer the look and weight of a mechanical watch. Winding it etc.
I have some mechanical watches from the 1950s and doubt my more modern quartz watches will still be getting loved in the year 2090.

But mostly - I am buying a watch to replace a recently departed one. It was a mechanical and I want to replace it with a mechanical. Keep the mechanical : quartz ratio in the collection as it was.

Lads citywatches.ie are they legit and safe to purchase from?

Lads citywatches.ie are they legit and safe to purchase from?

Probably best to steer clear, if you google them looking for reviews a few people claim they ship from Singapore.

Website is owned by the same company as creation watches so definetely not Irish.

They're a sister company of Creationwatches. Creation are legit so I would assume citywatches are legit however I have not personally used them.

I would check if your item is available on creation and go with them just out of familiarity, the inventory should be more or less the same. Prepare to pay VAT and handling fees.

http://whois.domaintools.com/citywatches.ie shows the IP address as located in Paris (hosted) and a quick check of trustpilot throws up this review.

fast delivery, but bear custom taxes. Not Irish business!
Reasonable price of the watch, but: costom taxes added 2/3 to the total. Thought citywatches.ie was local business, but shipping came from Singapore. Should state that more clearly on the web side. But that would probably prevent costumers from buying. Very fast delivering, but also there add 2 to 3 days for customs to clear.

Goes to show that where the company registered and also where it is hosted has absolutely nothing to do with where the product is actually shipped from.

Only in a very extreme case can customs add 2/3 to the total, and only because of a high admin fee from the courier company. Only really when you just hit the threshold for VAT. I.e. if you bought something for €30 shipped, then the VAT when caught is just €7 but you could be hit with a €14 admin charge, bringing the bill to 70% higher than you expected.

On a watch you get for €200 shipped, your bill would be €46 VAT + €14 admin = €60, so adding 30% to your total and on a watch for €500, it adds 25%

Is it possible to get replacement bezel's for Tissot watches? My PRS 200 has some damage on it from where I was drunk and fell up against a wall :( Or would it work out to expensive a repair relative to the watch value?

I just had an email from Engineers Ireland about a talk next Tuesday that may be of interest to some here.

    https://www.engineersireland.ie/Events/event/6699

All welcome in person in Ballsbridge and its being webcast too. I'm in an awkward place of possibly not making it into the talk on time, or getting home in time for the webcast. I might try finish in work early and head in.

I see two that jumped out, both 1930's pilots watches which seem to have been very popular in that neck of the woods(and central/eastern Europe generally).

The one on the right with the ribbon lugs and big crown.
    504721.jpg

    And this Roamer
    504722.jpg

They tend to be large watches and more fashionably large for today's wearer and look pretty cool with an interesting history. Basically they're in the running for being the first specifically tailored pilots watch.hence the large size for the time, rotating bezel for timing intervals, black dial with luminous numerals and large crown so easier to wind wearing gloves. Depends on price too and whether the tourist tax is in play. And of course how much you want to spend. I'd be happy enough with say 300 quid for the first one 400 for the second.

Their prices are lower than more western European dealers, but still care required. That Doxa, which is a genuine issued military watch, would be good at just under 300 euro, if it was the stainless steel model and it didn't have replacement hands and crown.
