As has been mentioned in several posts, Dudess. Also I always enjoyed reading Mike65.

Mike just changed his name, I believe he was getting some grief for the numbers of posts he had so changed, didn’t know Gordon was gone, many a good laugh in jail with G

Probably still here as I haven’t been on the boxing forum in quite some time, but BigEars was mod there and I don’t think he ever banned anyone in his life, whenever there was a heated dispute he used to post a truly detailed and insightful post about boxing, then everybody got focused again and the heat died down - brilliant

Did some people also take issue with Mike65? I remember there was a feedback thread once where Mike was making some run of the mill contributions, and a few people were like "Typical Mike", "Shut up. Mike" (maybe not those exact words) -- Mods too. Thought that was a bit strange, he seemed entirely inoffensive

Funny thing about Permabear was how so many people got sucked in by his fantasies, he had a cult following there towards the end. I just couldnt square a wealthy hedge fund owner spending most of his days posting on boards, it didnt add up.

Was it ever proven he was making it all up? I mostly lurked in politics in my previous guise, and I didn't really agree with him but I took his "life" at face value. Maybe I'm not cynical enough!

    Scofflaw was a fantastic poster.

Well he posts a lot in the soccer forum so that would explain the name calling, and I’d agree completely inoffensive.

Don't know if there was ever a smoking gun as such, but I think the "facts" started to get a bit harder and harder to believe. Like, for example, there was some thread here about age gaps in relationships and he basically took it over and started posting and posting and posting about his life - and supposedly, according to what he was saying anyway, his wife/girlfriend was in hospital because one of their children was seriously ill at that time, while he was here posting all through the night and morning.

Think about that. Child seriously ill in hospital, but yet plenty of time for posting on an Irish message board? It didn't add up, it was obvious BS.

And, like a lot of people have said, if you actually chatted to him about something you yourself knew a bit about, then it became obvious soon enough that he was just a very good spoofer.

I spoke earlier in the thread about how he was banging on one evening about the greatness of Finnegans Wake - he claimed to have read it repeatedly and was constantly re-reading it nightly. Now, I've put myself through the torture of reading Finnegans Wake and I'm highly skeptical about anyone claiming to read it for pleasure, multiple times - it's fcking impossible. So I had to prod him a bit to see what he had to say about the book. And he didn't have anything original to say - just obviously ripped off opinions he'd pilfered from elsewhere on the net. It looked good if you didn't know a whole pile about the subject at hand, but if you did then you just knew it was all nonsense.

He was a bit of cult hero towards the end, because I think most were wise to him, but, genuinely, looking back, I do feel sorry for the guy. To create such an elaborate fantasy life on an online forum... Just mind boggiling really.

The funniest was the blow by blow description of his upcoming nuptials. Topped off with himself and the young one choosing to sing Fairytale of New York to each other in front of a plethora of ultra high net wealthy hedge fund investors.

But in all seriousness, you couldn’t pull him up on anything because he would accuse you of all sorts. Despite the fact it was he who was providing all of these minute details that nobody even asked for.

    I loved reading Permabear's drivel.

I could never understand how people couldn't see through him, and some even still can't. The man was the worst kind of Walter Mitty - one with just enough brains to be dangerous.

i think everyone but the completely gullible knew but it was more craic to say nothing and of course the less he was challenged the further he went.
by the end his 20 year old girlfriend was a a mother( of 4 or 6?) was home schooling their children whilst studying for a degree whilst operating as a very successful hedge fund manager.

in fairness, it wasn't just the young ones he was after. The guy had a major hard-on for Thatcher.

On the other hand, we're bitches.

I loved how Permabear accused gaelscoils of being exclusive and elitist, but argued that businesses were right not to hire working-class people because they wouldn't know much about wine or golf.

That became fully apparent to me only with the help of some boardsie buddies of mine, though he did give me the heebie jeebies before that. Probably because whether his tales were true or not, they didn’t paint him in a good light.

I closed my _Dara_ account after a scuffle with him on a thread that left me a bit mortified. I wish I hadn’t had that rush of blood to the head but oh well.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget that remark he made to you. Absolutely deplorable. And he saw nothing wrong with it too.

And homeschooling was also a-ok with him even though you could accuse parents who homeschool of the same as what he accused gaelscoil parents of.

I mean, I was being pretty stubborn myself but, yeah, it was a low blow. Think that’s when he closed his account too. :pac: I think he knew there was no getting away with that. :pac:

I didn't close my account but I left the Sex & Sexuality forum because of him. We didn't even have any run-ins, I just couldn't bear his blatant nonsense any longer, not to mention the chorus of "Tell us more!" from the corps of acolytes he somehow managed to pick up.

Oh god. I’m so glad I wasn’t a member of the S&S forum at the time he was still around.

The “tell us more” people might have just been curious to see how far he’d go though! :pac:

Up to ODB if she’d like to share but I remember he was carded for it, disputed it in DR and had it overturned.
He played the victim well and he felt the outrage and disgust his remark had caused was “manufactured” to make him look bad.

He said I talked about having cancer too much. Well, I do, it’s true. So I was really embarrassed. I had got pretty personal too on the thread towards him too but I was just fed up hearing about his supposed wife and general self-praising drivel. It was a clusterfuck.

It was the way he said it. So dismissive and ignorant to your circumstances. Something like “you take over every thread talking about your cancer”.
    Disgraceful.

Generally not, sadly. You could pretty much always tell the people who were baiting him and those who had drunk his kool-aid on any forum he posted in. S&S at the time was frequented by a lot of people who - how to put this kindly - clearly weren't the most experienced/confident in that regard and god love them, they fell for his crap hook, line and sinker and he knew it.

The tone was pretty awful, I do recall. I’ve made some effort on this account to hold back a bit because I was already aware that I might rabbit on about it too much. That’s probably why I got embarrassed because I’d already flagged it as a problem myself. I hate to give that weirdo credit for anything but unfortunately he was partly right. A stopped clock is sometimes right, I guess.

At least we don’t have to read his self-congratulatory, delusional posts any more though!

I haven’t talked about The Incident since it happened. This is therapeutic. :D I’m almost done though.

As for the OP’s question, I know there are absolutely loads of posters I’d love to see around here again. The sad thing is, I only remember them when I read old threads.
