Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

70% parts commonality with Model 3.

10% bigger then model 3, 10% more expensive, slightly shorter range for the same battery.

Nothing surprising, sounds like the typical cross over type SUV's that are so popular at the moment. I'm sure it will be very popular.

Model 3 is a sedan which is not very practical for families (with dogs), who need a hatchback.

I'm not particularly keen on cross overs, but very interested in the Model Y, didn't realise it was coming this soon.

Interesting time at Tesla, lots of balls being juggled

It's interesting how no matter the time, no matter the specific subject, if it is Tesla related there is a certain core of posters who can always be relied on to turn up and cast a negative aspersion.

Completely agree with you, cannot see in this thread though. I cannot be bothered too much to post in the tesla threads anymore tbh

Is it not just as true that there's also a core of posters who think Musk is a real life Iron Man and that Tesla are on a mission to save the planet?

Passing a critical eye on the company, one can see that although it has a solid product lineup, the company is extremely stretched financially, has quality issues and had set itself up with a single point of failure, that Musk and the company are fundamentally intertwined. It's always been my opinion that if you take Musk out of the equation the company would really really struggle, like the old Apple without Jobs.

That said, we would all be best just judging the new product on it's merits. I look forward to seeing it.

need? Should I feel bad for the family dog in the boot for short drives to the countryside?

I'm amazed that a Fords Mondeo sized car (Model 3) is considered not suitable for 2 parents, 2 kids and a dog.

I sat in a Model 3 last week, it's a nice size for a family, and not too big for use in a city.

I am interested in this, I am concerned about the size of the boot and accessibility, that is my main gripe with the car for being our family car (moving from an old 520D Estate). It is a lot of money for something that might not be practical. I hope they bring some soon here to take a look at one in the flesh

Big boot, I leaned all the way in and could just touch the backs of the back seats. There is bonus storage under the boot cover (where a spare wheel would be) and the little frunk.

The big question - for me a deal breaker - can I get my golf clubs into the boot handy?

That doesn't feel right to me. If only there was even a ski hatch so it could stick its head into the cabin a bit and see the people?

    Linky

Although that wouldn't work if 3 people sit in the back. But I'm only new to owning dogs, maybe experienced owners could give their opinion on dog in boot?

Different strokes and all that. I generally have the dog on the passenger seat or in the back if she's being a bit bold.

Depends - how long are your woods/drivers?

Also, do you even Google? - https://youtu.be/Cb4xaJRoo00?t=275

I can't get my bike in so gonna have to get a roofrack or a very expensive towbar (there's no official tow mount, so one has to aftermarket one directly to the chassis  )

Each to their own .. I'm far more interested in an EV that can accommodate 6 - 7 people in comfort at an affordable price.

This is a Model Y thread so my question was on the soon to be revealed Model Y, not sure why most the recent posts have reverted back to Model 3

Hope that the Y is also materially larger inside, and not just a Model 3 on stilts.

Musk said Model Y is 10% bigger than Model 3. Hard to imagine the size of Model 3 though if you haven't been in one. I doubt very much it would be smaller than Ioniq / L40? So both should be big enough for 3 kids in the back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,213 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

I imagine the Y is to fit into the eniro size CUV which are quite compact.
I wouldn't be expecting model X levels of space.

Haven't sat in one, but Model 3 looks tight enough in the back in terms.of shoulder and head room. 3 car seats looks a real squeeze. Might have to go for the Model S with its three Isofix points!

3 car seats looks a real squeeze.

In fairness, 3 car seats in pretty much any sedan is a tight enough squeeze. Unless you go for E and F segment cars. Even in most D segment cars (VW Passat, Audi A4, BMW 3-series, Merc C-class, Ford Mondeo, etc. and presumably also Tesla Model 3?

I haven't seen used Model S dropping in price much yet since this weeks annoucement of the $35k Model 3 and the massive price reductions of the Model S and Model X. Which makes them even worse value for money than the already were :(

Won't happen for a while as the model 3 is not available in RHD.

Wasn’t massively interested in this car but kid was up so watched some of the live feed

Looks great, perfect for market and with 7 seats.....great, exactly what I need....so based on Model 3 so will be out soon.....happy days.....I will order today

Order opens....spring 2021.....FFS....ok carry on, nothing to see here

That looks far better than I expected. 7 seats a very useful option for me. 0.23Cd is best in class, should make for good efficiency and more importantly range. Base model for about EUR40k on the road here, provided we will still have the same incentives as we have now?

Model Y to Model 3 is like Model X to Model S

2021 I'd say incentives will be gone or severely reduced.

Amazed that they squeezed a third row of seats in there. I wonder will they offer a 6-seater option like the Model X? That's the ideal configuration, I think.

By the looks of the back seats you will be looking at small kids at a max

Great they got them into the car....it would be perfect now, only problem is kids have a nasty habit of growing so by the time this comes around I would guess sticking them in will be unworkable

How many kids do you have and how big are they? We're a family of 5 but it would be handy for us to occasionally bring the mother-in-law and / or other other kids with us, mainly for short-ish distances. The 2 extra seats would be useful for that. They look suitable even for adults, as long as they are well below 6 feet (1.8m).The seats look a lot more useful than the ones in the 7 seat option in Model S

    2016-tesla-model-x-5_800x0w.jpg

I'd say the interior will be similar in size, perhaps a bit bigger than a Nissan Qashqai 7 seater

That image makes it look a bit better.....current 3 squirts at the moment.....but 7 seats a must with friends and family......

Sorry I don't mean to slag off the car....when I seen it I was really excited...literally at 4 last night I would have stuck on deposit.....then its 2021 and just a little peeved at this stage with cars getting announced and then they are f**king years away from releasing.....

Not just saying it is Tesla either....really the Y should be up against the Buzz but it isnt coming til 2022....just sick of driving the transit

Yeah and spring 2021 in the US for the base model realistically means a 221 reg here. As you say, a good bit more competition coming by then, which is a good thing. Had this car been available for immediate delivery here, I would have ordered one today.

The issue with the third row of seats is generally there is little to no leg room in the back row. This looks the case here

The Qashqai is a very poor 7 seater that doesn’t fit three kids seats. SUV’s tend to have big wheel arches which reduces the internal size. Touran, C4, grand Picasso etc are much better it carrying people

In built pop up booster seats would really give it as advantage. I’ve seen them in a few Alhsmbras, volvos and seats

All good points, if you have a family of 7 and you travel a lot over long distances, you need a full size 7 seater. This 7 seat option car and others are perfect for people like me who only occasionally need to transport more than 5 people. The tiny rear facing seats in the 7-seat Model S would even do me. I don't think the leg room in the back row is a major issue, BTW. There are only 2 seats and there is width. Just don't sit with your knees touching each other and you'll be grand.

Good old Ford stuck their oar in as they had model E's in the 60's and planned (and now will) to launch their EV's as Model E's.

Aside, I likey likey the space of a 5 seater config but perhaps like many am realistically thinking when will the hit the used market, just seems so far away from today

The standard range Model Y has similar range, performance and space as the Jag Ipace, Audi Etron, Merc EQC but comes in at around half the price starting at $39,000. Obviously the other three will have better build quality and interiors but how much interior quality does $40,000 extra buy! As for the long range and performance Model Y, it blows the other three out of the water on range and acceleration for $57,000. The Model Y has a 7 seat option too which the others don't as far as I know.

    Great value alright

It's just so bland, not ugly, but boring.

Tesla badly need a new designer, even the new Roadster looks plain.

Is Tesla falling into the cookie cutter styling trap in that it will be hard to visually differentiate between a model X and Y, thereby devaluing the more expensive X in the eyes of potential buyers?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but ultimately I suggest the plain/bland/boring look is due to an efficient drag mindset.

I think the Model Y needs to look more like an SUV to appeal to the fashion conscious buyer.
The fundamentals of the Y are spot on but some buyers dont see beyond the looks.
Obviously aerodynamics and safety were the prime directive for the design brief.
Having said that I think it is a great product and will probably outsell all other Tesla models combined.
    Well done Tesla.

    Thats true too

People buying the Model S/X over 3/Y have more money than sense

You can get a performance 3/Y cheaper than base into those models

They need to upgrade/refresh them soon
