    Any corrosion on the connector?

No all looks fine. I'll prob take it to someone who knows what they are doing. Can't be bothered with it.

Did the control arm bushes on my vw cc today, very straight forward. Bit of work getting the bush off but all in all did both in about an hour. I did manage to over tighten a bolt and snap it but I got it out easy enough, you live and learn.

Well chuffed with myself only ever done brakes and change oil.

Finally Serviced herself's /my old Mk2 Tdi Leon it was only 8k over a service! 1litre of oil was drained capacity is 4.3!, fuel filter and housing gunk!, air filter was ok, all replaced with new filters and fresh oil, im surprised it hasn't blown up yet nearing 300k and it's a BXE engine regularly serviced on time when i owned it so possibly why it's still going strong even on 1 litre of oil!

Wouldn't it be beneficial to do it again after 5k to flush out any excess gunk from last time due to being overdue?

Was thinking about a flush i know the pros and cons just afraid it will eat some seals away as it's burning oil as it is

I have a 320ci parked outside and it is throwing a code that the MAF is faulty. p0102 Mass Airflow (MAF) Circuit Low Voltage Input. I picked up another MAF from a breakers and still same problem. If the MAF is unplugged the car starts and drives fine. If the MAF is reconnected the engine stops striaght away. If I start the car with the MAF hooked up it starts and then dies straight away. I checked the MAF is getting 12v no problem with a meter and car has a new battery too.

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

    Bad earth?

Ms jou's car washed and prepared (just a little bit) for winter.

    Still on summer wheels:

Colleague mechanic decided to fit monster size Chinese alloys to his Lancer, so got its factory wheels for peanuts, 4 winter tyres bought and fitted:

Yeah checked that with the meter and all seemed ok. Have it left in now with a specialist so see what he says...

Only seeing now, are you sure you got a good replacement? Sounds like another dud to me

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,381 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

No not sure of that. It's what I'm thinking too. The guy that has it now can easily get his hands on one that's working from another car no doubt and I think it's the first check for him when he gets around to having a poke at it.

Next oil change, drain the oil, pour in 4 litres of diesel, let it sit for an hour, drain thouroughly, but check how much gunk comes out. Be prepapred to put in another few litres for a short period if there's a load of gunk. Don't run / crank the engine
change filter and fill with fresh oil as needed.
The plastics and seals are well capable of exposure to dieself for a short period.

I've done it plenty of times without issues.
BTW BXE at 300K? Wow... my freinds blew last month, Audi coughed up most of the replacement.. car was serviced there the previous week to blow up... FMDSH

Sorry i may not made myself clear #Grammar, it was the fuel filter that was gunked up i don't think it had being changed in quite a while the housing was filthy and loads of black sediment when i drained the diesel out of it.
It is a BXE nearing 300k! it hasn't fired a conrod out of the block yet! besides two timing belts shocks and regular service items, it's being trouble free does a minimum of 100km a day mostly motorway.

Couple of jobs today, Replaced the auxiliary belt on the Accord, access is tightish but with an extra long straight 14mm spanner and removing the two clips that hold the plastic inside the wheelarch its not too bad a job, probably twenty minutes all told.
The old belt was probably fine, but it looked a bit grimy and rusty so would rather play it safe and fit a new one, especially coming into winter when loads are higher on the electrical system.
I'd say it would be almost impossible if you hadn't got one of those spanners, the tensioner is strong and it needs to be a straight head an angled combination one wouldn't work due to the clearance to the engine mount.

Impreza got a set of new front pads, I have to say I'm impressed with the genuine kit, it came with antisqueal paste and all new stainless springs. NOS prices weren't bad €50 delivered.

Got 4 new tyres for €480 fitted / balanced but learned the Tiguan may need new discs soon. Tell me lads, what's the average mileage before changing them? Car has new pads and stops really well but rust on the top of discs is unsightly.

That's a really hard question to answer. I wouldn't worry too much about the corrosion on the edge. Run your finger around the outside of the braking surface towards the edge and see if there's a lip there. If there is then most likely they are near end of life. I think 1mm is usually the limit for the lip.

The amount of life you get out of them depends on driving style, whether the car is auto or manual and type of driving (urban/motorway).

Completely depends on the car and driver.
Heavier car will need them more often than a lighter car but a harder driver in a lighter car who brakes heavily will need them more often than a softer driver in a heavier car.

Anywhere from 30,000km-60,000km would be a very mild average.

Rust is normal, it's metal exposed to moisture, it rusts. The accurate way of checking discs is measuring the thickness against the manufacturer spec. It's your driving style and conditions will determine longevity not mileage.

Cheers Cian, done shout 60K since we got the car so i think it's time. Should be another nice bill with 4 discs and pads all around (2014 Tiguan) 😞

Do them yourself. It's fairly simple plenty of detailed YouTube videos out there too.

your discs could be fine. You will usually get through at least 2 sets of pads before needing discs. As alanstrainor said, check them for a lip.

Found one of the wheels on the Passat was cracked and had been previously welded. Some say welds are safe, etc. but i don't like it and found out there is another hairline crack beside the weld so it was time for new wheels.

I got these ones because the price was excellent. They are the first set i've owned that were black and silver. normally it's silver or chrome. The stark contrast between the black/dark look and the previous ones makes me wonder if i've done the right thing, but too late now.

Anywho new wheels on. Now, and funnily enough with all the talk above about discs, my next step is a new set of front and rear brake discs. Have a new set of each (Brembo ones) on order and will have them next week. Then it's service time.

A bit too much black going on. I think they'd look better if they were sprayed all silver/grey. look in good nick anyway.

I know, and its bothering me now.

The same wheels were available in all silver but i went for these thinking the black and silver would be a nice change, after my first choice wheels (also black and silver but much more silver) could not be gotten in the size i needed.
