    Pennyworth

Batman Prequel ‘Pennyworth’ From ‘Gotham’ Duo Gets Series Order At Epix
MGM-owned Epix has given a 10-episode straight-to-series order to Pennyworth, a Batman prequel from Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller, executive producer/director Danny Cannon and Warner Horizon Scripted TV.

Written by Heller, based on DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, Pennyworth follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier who forms a security company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne, Bruce’s billionaire father, in 1960’s London. Production will begin later this year, with a series premiere slated for 2019.

Heller and Cannon executive produce and Cannon will direct the pilot.

“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series,” said Michael Wright, President, Epix. “We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny – along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon – on this fantastic origin story.”

Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon said, “Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate.”

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are bringing their Boston pride to Showtime.

The cabler has picked up a drama pilot “City on a Hill” from the Oscar winners, who will executive produce the project.

Based on an original idea by Affleck and Chuck MacLean (“Boston Strangler”), who wrote the script, “City on a Hill” is a fictional account of what was called the “Boston Miracle.” In the early ’90s, corruption and racism was the norm in Boston, until an African-American district attorney from Brooklyn arrives in the city, advocating change. He forms an unlikely alliance with a corrupt yet venerated FBI veteran who is invested in maintaining the status quo. The two take on a family of armored car robbers in a case that eventually upends the city’s criminal justice system.

The pilot will be directed by Gavin O’Connor (“The Accountant”), who will serve as executive producer along with James Mangold (“Logan”) and Jennifer Todd (“Memento”) of Pearl Street Films

    The Hunt

Amazon Nabs Jordan Peele’s Nazi Hunters Drama With Series Order
EXCLUSIVE: Amazon Studios has landed The Hunt, a vengeance-driven Nazi hunting series executive produced by Oscar-winning Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele, with a 10-episode straight-to-series order. The project, produced by Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions and Sonar Entertainment, was created by David Weil (Moonfall), who will write and executive produces.

This marks the first new scripted series pickup for Amazon since Jennifer Salke took the reins as head of Amazon Studios.

“Our biggest priority is attracting exceptional writing and producing talent to bring addictive, groundbreaking projects to Prime Video,” said Salke. “The Hunt is edge-of-your seat entertainment that is not only culturally relevant but deliciously original. David Weil, Jordan Peele, and the entire Monkeypaw and Sonar Entertainment teams represent the dream team! We can’t wait to get started!”

Based on an original idea, drawing from real-life events, The Hunt originated as a hot drama series spec, which was taken out to the premium marketplace by Sonar Entertainment last fall, garnering interest from multiple buyers. The company had been in discussion with another network when Amazon recently stepped up and secured the project.

The Hunt follows a diverse band of Nazi Hunters living in 1977 New York City. The Hunters, as they’re known, have discovered that hundreds of high ranking Nazi officials are living among us and conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the U.S. The eclectic team of Hunters will set out on a bloody quest to bring the Nazis to justice and thwart their new genocidal plans.

“When David Weil first shared The Hunt with me, I immediately knew that we had to be involved,” Peele said. “It’s cathartic. It’s noir. It’s frighteningly relevant. It’s exactly what I want to see on television. I am thrilled to be working with Amazon in bringing this incredible vision to the world.”

The series is also be executive produced by Tom Lesinski (Mr. Mercedes) and Jenna Santoianni (Mr. Mercedes) from Sonar Entertainment, and Win Rosenfeld (Dark Net) from Monkeypaw Productions. A global exclusive, The Hunt will premiere in over 200 countries and territories on Prime Video.

Think this is the third tv series attempt. First was the pilot with Sarah Bolger for Fox, then Hulu and now Netflix. Think there were movie attempts as well.
The comic is a short series and I wouldn't say it's too expensive to make compared to other series on tv.

    Years and Years

BBC One Sets Up Dystopian Family Drama ‘Years and Years’ From ‘Doctor Who’s Russell T Davies
The British public broadcaster has ordered Years and Years from the pair, which will follow a busy family from Manchester with their lives converging on one crucial night in 2019. The story will then accelerate into the future, following the lives and loves of the Lyons over the next 15 years as Britain withdraws from Europe, America becomes a lone wolf, China asserts itself, and a new world begins to form. Politicians Vivienne Rook then begins her rise to power – that new breed of politician, an entertainer, a rebel, a trickster and a terror, leading the family into an unknown future that they must navigate through.

It is the ninth collaboration between Davies and Red Production Company founder Nicola Shindler following shows such as Queer As Folk and Cucumber. The six-episode drama will air on BBC One, with production set to start later this year and Red Production Company owner Studiocanal selling globally.

It will be exec produced by Davies and Shindler as well as the BBC’s Lucy Richer. Karen Lewis is series producer and it was commissioned by BBC drama chief Piers Wenger.

The announcement comes after Davies’ latest project, three-part political scandal thriller A Very English Scandal, starring Hugh Grant, came to an end on BBC One. The mini-series is set to launch on Amazon in the U.S. shortly.

Davies said: “I’ve wanted to write this for 20 years or so. And as the world accelerates like crazy around us, I realized I’d better get on with it.”

Red Production Company Founder Nicol Shindler added: “The script is fantastic, and taps into the anxieties of the climate we are currently living in, speculating how the dynamics of cultural and political change affects our lives – and the lives of our families. What Russell does so expertly is navigate a potentially dark and fearful story into a compelling drama that is full of wit, warmth and hope, with family at the heart of the show. I can’t wait to get started.”

A rare morning off on my own so decided to start series 3 of Hap and Leonard and 15 minutes in it had more genuine laughs than most comedies earn in a series. That Sundance cancelled the show and it ain't already been picked up by Amazon or Netflix is a sin, series 2 was one of the most nuanced and humane crime shows since the Wire and it's wry sense of humour allowed it to find the darkest of humour in the most messed up of situations. Genuinely be disappointed if series 3 is the end as alongside Longmire, which was recently cancelled, there's little else on that I would genuinely go way out of my way to watch.

    Pippa Smith: Grown-Up Detective

Joss Whedon to Produce Freeform Female Detective Comedy Series From Siobhan Thompson, Rebecca Drysdale
Joss Whedon is set to executive produce a half-hour comedy series currently in development at Freeform, Variety has learned exclusively.

The project is currently titled “Pippa Smith: Grown-Up Detective.” Hailing from creators Siobhan Thompson and Rebecca Drysdale, the series is described as a dark comedy that follows Pippa Smith, a twenty-something former kid sleuth, as she deals with relationships, addiction and being too dang old for the detecting game. Each episode, Pippa solves a new case, while unraveling a bigger mystery and attempting to navigate a messy personal life.

Big Breakfast will produce. Whedon and Drysdale serve as executive producers, with Thompson co-executive producing. Drew Buckley, Jillian Vogel and Sam Reich are executive producers for Big Breakfast, which is an Electus company.

Drysdale’s previous writing credits include “The Big Gay Sketch Show,” “Key and Peele,” “Baskets,” and “High Maintenance.” Thompson has written for and performed in shows like “CollegeHumor Originals” and “Bad Internet.”

Whedon first made his mark on the pop culture landscape when he created the popular series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which ran for seven seasons. He went on to create “Firefly,” which has achieved a major cult following despite only airing 14 episodes. He went on to become a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, writing and directing both “The Avengers” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”

The first of the 1 million or so GoT's spin offs has been picked up by HBO.

‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel: HBO Picks Up George R.R. Martin and Jane Goldman Pilot, Reveals First Plot Details
“What is dead may never die,” as they say in the Iron Islands and the halls of HBO. The network has picked up the pilot for an untitled prequel to “Game of Thrones,” created and written by Jane Goldman and George R.R. Martin.

This won’t be “Better Call Stannis,” though. The official description, as announced by HBO, is as follows:

Taking place thousands of years before the events of GAME OF THRONES, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’s history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.

The official credits for the pilot are: Story by Jane Goldman & George R.R. Martin, Teleplay by Jane Goldman. Goldman, Martin, Vince Gerardis, and Daniel Zelman will executive produce.

    Away

Jason Katims Space Drama Ordered to Series at Netflix
'Felicity' co-creator Matt Reeves will executive produce 'Away,' which is inspired by Chris Jones' Esquire story.
Jason Katims is blasting off with Netflix.

The Friday Night Lights and Parenthood showrunner has landed a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for space drama Away at the streaming giant.

Written by Katims and Andrew Hinderaker (The Path, Penny Dreadful), Away is loosely inspired by Chris Jones' Esquire story of the same name. The project is described as an epic love story and thrilling tale of survival set against humanity’s greatest endeavor — the first human mission to Mars.

The series revolves around Emma Green, an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind in order to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous, yearlong mission. Away explores themes including hope, humanity and how people need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.

Katims will executive produce alongside Felicity co-creator Matt Reeves. The drama hails from Katims' Universal Television-based True Jack Productions banner and Reeves' 6th and Idaho shingle. Former True Jack topper Michelle Lee, who developed the series before she departed for Apple, will exec produce the first episode. Her replacement at True Jack, Fullscreen's Jeni Mulein, will co-exec produce episodes two through ten. Reeves' 6th and Idaho executive vp Adam Kassan will also serve as an exec producer. Hinderaker will also be credited as a co-EP after working briefly with Katims on his since-canceled Hulu cult drama The Path. Negotiations are underway to bring in a showrunner to oversee the series.

Jones' March 2015 feature followed astronaut Scott Kelly's yearlong mission on the International Space Station, which was considered the most ambitious manned space mission in decades. Jones spent three months reporting on the mission.

For Katims, Away comes weeks after NBC opted to cancel his high school theater drama Rise after one season and a month-plus after Hulu opted to cancel the Aaron Paul, Hugh Dancy and Michelle Monaghan drama The Path after three seasons.

Away arrives as Reeves is making a concerted push on the small screen. His Fox genre drama The Passage was picked up to series at Fox after it was redeveloped when it narrowly missed the cut last year. On the film side, his credits include The Cloverfield Paradox, which made waves when it was released on Super Bowl Sunday on Netflix. He also wrote and directed 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes and helmed 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

    Looney Tunes

‘Looney Tunes’ Getting Short-Form Revival At WB Animation
Warner Bros Animation is creating a new series of short-form cartoons based on the studio’s iconic Looney Tunes Cartoons franchise featuring the likes of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and the gang that will harken to the original Looney Tunes theatrical shorts. The studio said today multiple artists will produce 1-6 minute shorts “written” and drawn by the cartoonists allowing their own personality and style to come through.

The plan is to produce 1,000 minutes each season, with the content to be distributed across multiple platforms including digital, mobile and broadcast.

“The Looney Tunes are one of the most beloved group of animated characters in the world,” said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros Animation and Warner Digital Series. “Looney Tunes Cartoons places these characters into the hands of some of the best artists in the business and into an animated shorts format that will remind many of the time when they first fell in love with Bugs, Daffy, Porky and the rest of the gang.”

The series will be produced by Warner Bros Animation and features veteran Looney Tunes voice cast members including Eric Bauza, Jeff Bergman and Bob Bergen. Register and Peter Browngardt are executive producers

    Tell Me A Story

Paul Wesley To Co-Star In CBS All Access Series ‘Tell Me A Story’, Reuniting With ‘The Vampire Diaries’ EP Kevin Williamson
Wesley has been tapped for a lead role opposite The Originals alumna Danielle Campbell, Billy Magnussen and Kim Catrall in the straight-to-series drama, from Williamson and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment.

Written by Williamson, Tell Me a Story takes the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller. Set in modern day New York City, the first season of this serialized drama interweaves “The Three Little Pigs,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “Hansel and Gretel” into an epic and subversive tale of love, loss, greed, revenge and murder.

Wesley plays Eddie, a derelict and troubled individual whose petulance is fueled even more by his problems with drugs and alcohol. Although he works as a bartender, he also splits his time as a low-level drug dealer and part-time thief with his older brother Mitch, who never fails to treat Eddie as the lowly delinquent that he is.

Campbell plays Kayla. Catrall plays her grandmother.

Williamson executive produces with Kapital’s Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor. Liz Friedlander directs and executive produces the first two episodes.
