Looks like the wheelbase has been stretched. Hard to tell from the photo but it seems narrow at the back

It's really narrow at the back!

Wow the side air intakes on the Ferrari are so slim. Even more so than last years car. The Halo looks nicely integrated into it too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

At least it looks somewhat incorporated into the design rather than an after thought!

Yes it has a longer wheelbase this year. Strange decision by Ferrari given the problems that Mercedes had with there long wheelbase car on some tracks. Ferrari had an advantage over them on some tracks. You would think they would want to keep that advantage they had.

Looks like it's a middle of the road approach - longer than last year, but not artic-truck long. Except for Spa, they were suffering a bit on fast tracks.

Interesting note, they retained the Cloverleaf badge...

Seriously drastic coke bottle effect on that Mercedes. The engine must be smaller than last year. Could it lead to cooling issues?

    Hopefully

Just noticed the mirrors too - have they sneakily re-introduced a modified version of the x-wing? :D

The engines need to last even longer this year dint they? Can't imagine merc looking to introduce more unreliability.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,160 ✭✭✭✭PopePalpatine

Maybe the engine manufacturers found a way to re-package the PUs that made them more reliable, yet less bulky? Maybe they don't need so much cooling now that the FIA are clamping down on the use of engine oil?

Yup, they've only got 3 this year. Will be interesting to see how Toro Rosso get on with that - hopefully Honda will deliver something in some way reliable.

Not that I'd have a feckin clue but those sidepod intakes on the Ferrari are mental looking. Cant wait for testing next week.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault look like in the Spanish sunshine. Of the cars launched so far, they are my favourites.

Yeah, I think the Renault looks great. That and the Alfa do it for me.

I'm off work sick for a while so I'm looking forward to following the testing. Even though it means feck all etc it's F1 and it's exciting. :)

Is it just McLaren and FI now? Gonna be following McLaren closely for Alonso. Hopefully there is progress with that engine and he's fighting towards sharp end of the grid. Even if Merc walk it again this year I'll be happy with an epic battle behind them.

I think Mercedes dominance now is more harmful than that of Ferrari (2000-2004) and Red Bul (2010-2013).

Although I’m too young to remember McLaren Honda part 1 and the battle with Prost/Senna That didn’t damage F1 as it was all out war with them and we won’t see the likes of that again.

Hamilton/Rosberg and their war wasn’t comparable to it.

Personally, I don't think it has been anywhere near as bad as 00-04 because of the FIArrari shoit that was going on, them with lapdog number 2 plus the racing was dull as fook except for Montoyas exploits. The Redbull era was tough too but I thought 13 was a great season for the racing that went on behind Vettel. It seemed like every second race there was an immense battle for podium places. Silverstone that year was fantastic IIRC.

Last year was a low because Rosberg fecked off but there was enough going on behind Hamilton to keep me interested. Prospects are good again this year because of the driving talent. Lets hope things tighten up a bit.

2014-15 was every bit as bad as 00-04 as Mercedes were operating in a different formula, 2016 had the saving grace of Hamilton under-performing and Rosberg getting the bit of luck to beat him while last year at least threatened to be competitive.

There were a couple of seasons in Ferrari's dominant years where McLaren and Williams were every bit as fast as them but Schumacher and 2003 was a great championship in terms of competitiveness.

Agreed - sure, Ferrari had the FIA on their side and you could argue the same for Red Bull in 2013 when they got the tyres reverted to 2012 specs after the British GP - but it was much easier to catch up than the deficit to Mercedes nowadays.

McLaren launch today. I'm not sure of the exact time of the launch, but streaming will begin on their website from 7am this morning.

The lack of a title sponsor really shows
Like the front on view, the bit of blue is cool

Its shocking that lack of sponsorship

It does look bare, due to the mainly one colour and lack of sponsors.

I think the overall corporatisation of the sport is the problem, big money is wrecking it, by sterilisation and over dominates of big teams that have access to big money. Yes there has always been big money in f1, and big teams, but in times past, even budget teams had some sort of a chance of getting up there with the big boys, and from time to time, even winning a race. It created excitement and interest for all, now it's just slowly becoming a borefest. It's a similar thing that happened to the English premiership, I know people who use to love it, and basically lived for it, now they couldn't careless.
