I know it's infuriating but it's been repeated countless times in this forum that it only has to be declared an ad if money changes hands.

This isn't strictly true. If it is contingent on a positive review then it is an ad and should be hashtagged as such.
But if it's not for a positive review but for promotional material to be use for the products - that's not an ad?!

I don't follow your comment above but my point was no cash doesn't automatically mean no ad.

Should affiliate links be classed as ads? They do technically get money from them.

The ASAI sees affiliate links as "marketing communications" and should therefore be disclosed as an affiliate link and provide a disclaimer. A lot of bloggers don't declare this however.

    https://www.google.ie/amp/www.dailyedge.ie/bloggers-influencers-affiliate-links-3242387-Feb2017/%3Famp%3D1

I think one blogger was using the #affiliate for a while but then dropped that like a hot potato when she realised it wasn't making her as much money.
Wouldn't it be great if we could all bend the rules at work so we could make more money.

Yeah, I was just watching Snapchat this morning and one blogger was looking up holidays. Then suddenly remembered she had a discount vote for the holiday website she's looking at so to go to her page and use the link there. On that post she did mention it was affiliate, but on a post from earlier this week the same link wasn't marked as affiliate. Really annoys me. If I like the blogger I've no problem using affiliate links, not that I buy much of what they advertise. But it's that deception that's frustrating.

I'd only ever browse bloggers sites who I like and respect for honestly, I'd have no problem using their affiliate links. However, they must be consistent and use it all the time. I think Retroflame is pretty good for this, I'm really liking her more and more lately. She doesn't seem to sell out and throw her name on anything. She appears to only with work brands she trusts, and IMO doesn't cheapen her image by selling out for stuff that isn't 'her'. I'm thinking RMC is the one who always used to disclose, and then found she was making less money, so disclosed less?

Ok, I may be wrong actually about Retroflame disclosing her links, just had a browse on her blog at some of the summer gear she recommends, and it flashed up with the rstyle link, but I don't see anything marked on the post as affiliate? That's disappointing :(

I just had a look at a few bloggers sites there to see how they go about disclosing affiliate links..

Retroflame - doesn't disclose affiliate links

Makeup Fairy - doesn't disclose affiliate links

Rosie Connolly - doesn't disclose affiliate links

Suzanne Jackson - has a disclaimer at bottom of posts... "*Please note that Suzanne may receive partial payment from the above links"

Pippa O'Connor - has a disclaimer at bottom of posts... "Please note, Pippa may receive commission on sales via the links above"

Just Jordan - loads of fashion posts where she doesn't disclose affiliate links, but in her Click & Shop section she has disclaimer at the bottom "Please note I may receive commission from some of the links. What does that mean?.. so it means that some links are affiliated and I may get 1/2/3 Euro of a sale it doesn’t make it any dearer for you the price is the price regardless. It is not an ad but I do like to be transparent in all aspects of my blog. Hope this covers everything."

Leanne Woodfull - doesn't disclose affiliate links on the actual posts, but has a Disclaimer section on her site that reads "Honesty is key when it comes to me and my content, across the board.

All sponsored content is declared clearly and any specific sponsored or gifted products featured within a blog post have an asterix (*) beside them.

I'm a Reward Style partner so various images and advertisements on my blog lead you through to a selected product via an affiliate link. I earn a relatively small % commission if a purchase is made.

I never have and never will work with any brands or products that I don't genuinely like or have use for. All content is of interest to me and my readers.

All writing on Thunder and Threads is my own, unless stated otherwise.

Social media: all sponsored content is visibility labelled with #affiliate, #ad or #sp.

I strictly follow the current ASAI guidelines on blogging and influencer advertisements and believe that transparency between bloggers and readers is vital when it comes to building trust and respect."

I'm disappointed Retro doesnt do it, I know she's quite good at #ad on her snaps, so why doesn't she do this with the links on her blog?? Surely her blog is way more important to put a disclaimer on, as she is US based and they are far stricter there with disclosure? I was hoping I'd missed where she had written it, but clearly not :(

Previously she wasn't great for #ad either but seems to have improved that side of things.

You can pretty much guarantee that any link popped up now is affiliate. Like I said earlier I've no problem going through an affiliate link if I like the blogger, but some just put up random crap for the sake of it. It also gets very boring when all you see is clothes from asos and river island because they're affiliated brands. I'm not sure when the bubble will burst with some of these bloggers, but they'll be caught eventually.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,951 ✭✭✭SB_Part2

I stopped following Retro because of her never using #ad. Glad to hear she's got better but still disappointing to hear she's not declaring affiliate links.

Part of me thinks the only reason bloggers put up a post for say "10 Bikinis for Summer 2017" (just an example) is to put up affiliate links. The only items featured are those for which they can get an affiliation, rstyle, or some other kickback from. You don't see them feature Dunnes, Penneys, Zara (which I understand don't do affiliates). It's all River Island and Asos, Misguided and PTL

So Sue Me is very pedantic about you clicking HER link - so much so that she has in the past had a copy and paste link after even item. I think she has it changed now but there's still instructions on her blog about copying and pasting links.
P.s. If you’re having trouble accessing the items below, please copy and paste the direct link of your chosen shirt dress into your browser. You will find this direct links to each dress listed below the images.
    http://sosueme.ie/fashion/its-all-about-the-shirt-dress/

I'm not sure if it's a case of making sure the bloggers gets every chance of an affiliation click or if readers can't do a quick 2 minute browse on Asos for the item and are demanding a link directly to the exact item is provided cos they can't be ar$ed searching for it.

You know I'd say it's a bit of both! People can be incredibly lazy! There is a group I'm in on fb and some of the questions asked would take less time to Google! So I'm sure a lot of bloggers get prob twenty (more I'm sure) questions about where the top is from so probably easier to put the exact link in!
Some times you even would see them in a snap saying where the item is from and a few snaps later have to say again because people don't pay attention or are to lazy! I'm sure it's headwrecking for them!!

Just watched Rosie connellys snaps from yesterday all promoting the hairdressers the nail technician and the products used in her hair not one # at the very least #freetreatments so we can decide whether her opinions may be because of the freebies...
I don't understand why that's not made clear it's promotion for benefits in kind ..

That new salon Dry&Fly or whatever it's called seems to be giving every blogger going a free blow dry in exchange for social media coverage. I know technically this isn't an ad, but to me it makes the salon look a bit desperado. One or two bloggers to promote the place maybe, but literally every blogger going has been in there at some point and they're not even open that long.
It would make me avoid the place the way they're so intent on kissing up to bloggers to promote their business- I call it the Meaghers effect. Avoid avoid avoid.

Omg. Anna I was just coming on to say this. It's unbelievable! They've probably been given free blow dries for a year given the amount of followers they will reach.

My friend works in tayto park and recently told me Mrs Makeup aka Michelle ragazolli rang a few times a week begging for a family pass for her boys, a few weeks ago she started ringing again this time for a free party for her little boy she bragged she had thousands of followers and would give them great advertisement and she got the free party much to the dismay of alot of friends who are mothers and spend alot of time in tayto park. Michelle then did a few snaps of her around the park and that was it shes unreal. I unfollowed on all platforms

She says in her Instagram post that she found the €25 price per child to be a "bargain" well of course she did, it sounds as though she's didn't pay it. I don't follow her but o definitely wouldn't be able to trust her after hearing this!

I was wondering did Tayto offer or was it herself begging!! What a divil. The thing that annoys me is that these people can probably well afford to pay for these types of things. And I agree, her saying €25 per child was a bargain, was pure tripe.

What has happened to Fairy's collaboration or sponsorship or whatever it was with MissfitSkinny Tea and The D? That seemed to completely come to a halt did it ?

Was only thinking of this earlier on today! Must be finished? She hasnt mentioned it in months! I think she showed her supplements when she was showing stuff in her room in London don't remember seeing 'the d' in the clip! Could be wrong tho!

Edit - just looked at her about me and that is gone from her list of ambassador roles!

It hasn't been mentioned in ages and it's never seen in any photos. Just goes to ahow how ingenuine they can be as "brand ambassadors".

I remember the big build up she did to that announcement too, so cringey.

Is #iworkwithpenneys a nicer was of saying #ad/#sp? Just saw it on Niamh Cullen's instagram stories

Yep, a sneakier way. I just searched the tag along with primark and Chloé Boucher, Aimee Connolly, Love Lauren and Tara Makeup came up and no #ad/#sp I'm sure there's more but there were the top posts. The influencers seem to think these sort of tags along with #brandambassador are sufficient when the guidelines clearly state otherwise. But when there is no repercussions for not following the guidelines they will keep skirting around the requirements.

Instagram used to be fun following celebs and various bloggers with their genuine posts but now it's just a major advertisement/money-making platform.

Had to unfollow Roz Purcell since nearly every second post she is advertising something, mainly Reebok which she doesn't even use #ad #spon for anymore.

I don't follow her either but if she did blag free passes for Tayto park, it would be very cheeky to use for a child's party where 21 were invited as per her instagram post. It's one thing to blag a family pass, it's quite another for a large birthday party. IMO puts financial pressure on parents. At €25 per head, I could only justify it if bringing a small handful of my son's friends.
