Seems there is a lot of people asking this - I know the guys in my office bring it up all the time, people who aren't as hardcore.

Those strikes are illegal but does any one know why? What is the theory behind them being illegal?

Superman punches are not illegal. One was landed on Roger Mayweather in a world title fight in the past and Stephen Espinoza (Showtime CEO) said they are legal.

In fight news, Ariel said the word he is getting is that Floyd is refusing to go to "home cities" for the Press Tour. So Dublin and Vegas are out. Probably leaves London, NY, L.A.

The ruleset

The following acts shall not be permitted during a Contest:-

(c) hitting on the back of the head or neck:

Yes, a good 4 or 5 years past his prime. It was an intriguing fight, but from what i saw i think a younger De La Hoya would've edged him out.

It's a sanctioned fight by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for a start. If you *throw* a fight you're risking years in jail and losing your purse.

Secondly, and far more importantly, there was $80 million gambled in Vegas on the Floyd-Manny fight. They are predicting $100 million gambled on this fight. There are a number of State and Federal Laws in play here and I'm not going to list all the Statutes on the books.

If it's uncovered they defrauded the public out of $100 million in a State with harsh views on fraud and gambling fraud, they will both be wearing orange.

It will be a normal ass boxing fight. If Floyd is so superior to Conor and dances around for 12 rounds, FINE. But the implication this fight won't be above board, that there might be collusion between the camps, is worthy of absolute scorn and derision.

It's not going to be a scam/a fix/shenanigans/a rigged fight. A one-sided dance for Floyd? Probably but that's different

The same commission that is sanctioning a 49-0 boxer to fight a 0-0 boxer. There is already some dodgy sh!te going on here, so it would not surprise me if something dodgy was going on here. Seriously are you telling me they sanctioned this fight and its all above board? 49-0 TBE v 0-0 :pac:

Floyd gets his 50 and a ton of money. Little to no credit for beating a non pro boxer, regardless of how easily he does it.

I really think we're going to see Conor attempt to land the corkscrew uppercut+left cross combo a lot come fight night (remember, he has to try land something!).

There's a few reasons I believe we will see it thrown, early and often.

The first reason is that now is not the time for Conor to be learning new tricks or skills. So it stands to reason he will return to combinations he has a lot of experience of throwing.

The second reason is it's generally a good combination for a southpaw to attempt on an orthodox fighter who carries a high guard. Floyd will shell up a lot, the lead uppercut should at the very least prompt him to split his guard.

Even if Conor misses on both shots (as he has done often in the past) he usually ends up carrying his feet forward into clinch range. Obviously he's vulnerable to a supreme boxer like Floyd timing him with a right hand coming in.

Lastly, between Conor and Gunnar Nelson, they threw the corkscrew uppercut+cross combination 19 times between them over 8 fights that I've re-watched. That indicates to me that it's a combination that SBG (John + Owen) are also comfortable with incorporating into a gameplan.

This fight should not be sanctioned, that isn't just my opinion that is fact from their records in boxing. There has to be somebody getting bribes in the sanctioning body for them to let this go ahead.

There's 100% no bribes though. The economic impact for Nevada for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight was $400 million according to Forbes. It might push $600 million for this fight.

All members of the sanctioning body would be bundled into a car in the middle of the night and left in the Nevada Desert if they refused to sanction the fight.

Floyd was allowed put off going to jail to fight in Vegas, so you're right about economical impact on the area but brown envelopes are and were involved in this.

People keep going on about the van Heerden sparring footage. I guarantee you 100% we could see footage of Conor sparring Artem in MMA over the years where Artem does really well and tools Conor up. Both Conor and Artem are on record saying they've had some absolute wars in the gym.

The point is this - whatever footage we see of Conor in training (be it MMA or boxing) is irrelevant. He's not a gym fighter. He comes into his own on the big stage under the bright lights when the pressure is at its maximum.

I enjoy Johns articles. His experience is always a joy to read.

Just not sure I would agree with this bit though.

Mayweather has been in the boxing world for his entire career and everyone he’s faced has moved in a certain way that he’s pre-conditioned to handle. Now he’s going up against a guy who doesn’t follow any set patterns, who can deploy a variety of different styles of fighting and is not one bit intimidated. Conor is — as we all are here — 100% confident in victory. That kind of person is very difficult to deal with.

Mayweather has been in there with the cream of the crop of boxers, fighting on an equal ground. The variety of styles of fighting won't really help if he can only use one though, no?
