Mayweather has been in there with the cream of the crop of boxers, fighting on an equal ground. The variety of styles of fighting won't really help if he can only use one though, no?

John said something in his previous article which stuck with me but I think he's misguided.
Of course, hands only, but maybe there are things we can do from an MMA perspective, which, if people study boxing from the early 20th century, those things were a bigger part in the boxing game than they are today. We’re bringing an old-school boxing approach.

I'm presuming the styles he's talking about is old school boxing and the lost-art of the clinch. The problem with that is the ref is probably going to be Kenny Bayless, someone Floyd always tries to get because he's in like a ninja to break up fighters.

If Kenny Bayless is appointed I hope Conor objects to it on the basis Bayless gave a disparaging interview last year saying Conor shouldn't be allowed to box. You can't say something like that and claim to be impartial.

Tony Weeks allowed plenty of clinch-work in Kovalev-Ward but Floyd came out this year slating his performance in a couple of fights so I doubt he's expecting any phone calls.

When I read the old skool approach, I immediately thought of the old guys with the hands down, going for the body.

Old techniques against the finest boxer of the modern era, that is analog thinking in a digital fight. I hope that was more tongue in cheek.

This part of the article was encouraging:

"There will be sparring with guys we’re already familiar with but we will also be bringing in some guys who I think people will be impressed with."

Who would we be impressed with? Lomachenko/Berto are 2 definite possibilities because Loma already offered to help Conor and Berto is good pals with him & revealed yesterday that he's been texting Conor this week.

He's definitely talking about the clinch imo.

Floyd pretty much only fights with Bayless, who doesn't really allow the clinch.

I don't think Floyd will be in any rush to tie him up that said.

Berto for sure, Lomanchenko is a stretch, his speed and general boxing style is nothing like Floyd, he fights on fast-forward.

Alvarez is in camp right now, so is GGG, they could possibly do a round or 15. Cotto is still active.

But these are all pretty high-level guys, they don't always do the sparring partner thing. They have made their money and their name at this stage.

The fight would be off if Conor sparred Canelo or GGG for one round.

Sure your don't need him to win this fight to be glad to do that in fairness.

Did multiple people really ask whether a spinning back fist is allowed in boxing?!

When does the press start for this? Most likely gonna be a far more entertaining and competitive spectacle than the fake fight!

I think that's more mid 1800s that 29th century. Came about due to bare knuckles, although stylistically it carried over to Queensbury era for a while.

I've no idea what Johns referring to in the 20th century. Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, or earlier?

Fat retired Ricky Hatton would ruin Conor.

Am I the only one excited by Johns article stating conor will fight in the ufc again in December probably.

Once this farce is over its back to business.

    Can't wait.

Well that is if conor doesn't get kod and his chin is ****ed forever and we don't see him fight again:)

If it's a lightweight title defence it has to be Ferguson doesn't it?

Only other fights I could think would be Woodley or GSP.

I'd be concerned about Conor's UFC return. There's no way he has been training all the non striking elements of MMA for the past 6 months and the next few months too.

Surely, a decent game plan for Conor's return is to take him down and see how rusty he is a BJJ/Wrestling?

Do you know if Kavanagh write his own articles or are they written by Paul Dollery? Just from the point of view of trying to understand how accurate the info and opinions are.

He's been out injured for similar spells. At this stage it's hardwired for him, and I'd say he'd be up to full speed half way through a camp.

That's the game plan every time someone fights Conor, so nothing new.

Surely if Connor wins this fight he should retire,
It would be the perfect ending to this amazing journey

Win or lose, fair play to Conor for all the amazing buildups and early morning good times

I don't think he'll retire, I think he might do one title defense at 55 and then go for 170 depending on the lay of the land.

Ah, but is that in a boxing match, mma fight, street fight, knife fight, pitched gun battle, how many arms are tied behind backs, and finally, would you give Conor 0.0001% chance or 0.00001% chance

Conor said he wanted to fight again this year, in December, why are people mentioning retirement. Dana White says he wants to fight in the UFC again, all his team mates say he wants to fight again.

I reckon an athlete like Conor is going to want to compete at the highest level no matter how much money he has. The pull will be too much while he is in his prime. I can't see any possibility of him retiring, it would only be a stunt and he'd be back for some huge fight 6 months or a year later.
Aside from the desire to compete he'll probably start talking about legacies and the likes soon enough too.

Its a pity GSP has gone and put on all that weight, or he could of come back for the LW belt, that would be a mega fight.

He'll fight 6-8 more times in the UFC in my opinion. He has 2 fights left on his current deal and he'll probably sign an improved 4-fight or 6-fight deal.

First and foremost he's very young and loves fighting.

The other part is while the projected $100 million purse sounds whopping (and it is) there's an immediate 39.6% federal income tax to come off that. There is also the Medicare Tax and Medicare Surcharge Tax which could apply to Conor dependent on his residency or visa status for the fight. That could be another 2.35% total.

I'm sure he has a whole team of creative accountants but there are very real scenarios where Conor clears less than $50 million for the fight after tax and deductibles (agents %, coaches % etc.). Paradigm Sports Management's cut for this fight is going to amount to millions.

Conor won't be long spending that type of money, especially when he's on record saying he wants to buy a private jet.

If he loses in a manner that will increase his popularity (for example a ding-dong fight), then it'll only increase his earning potential in the UFC. I could envisage on the back of this Conor becoming the first UFC fighter to break 2 million PPV buys in MMA, whether it's the Diaz trilogy or GSP fight.

Regardless of the money, I think he'll want to leave a better legacy behind in MMA. Right now, he'll go down as a legend but people will say "ah he never defended any belts and he ducked Frankie, Khabib and Ferguson". So I definitely see him fighting many more times.

Shouldn't be too far off would be my guess.

JK said they are heading out mid July and so that would mean the European pressers (including Ireland if it happens and I think it will) would have to happen by then.... as I can't see McGregor flying out there and then having to fly home at a later stage just for a presser.... could happen I suppose but wouldn't make much sense.

I mentioned retirement would be a good idea if he beats mayweather

It's a dangerous game. He should stick to his plan, get in, get rich, get out

Leonard Ellerbe said the pressers will begin late June/early July.

It's Floyd's MO to move things along fast. For example, after he signed to fight Manny they held the first press conference just over 2 weeks later.

I don't know if this is a pattern he'll repeat but every big Floyd v Manny presser was held on a Wednesday and Floyd is a creature of habit so I wouldn't be surprised to see the first press conference slated for next Wednesday June 28th or July 5th in London.
