Yeah I thought he was childish with that as well. Every couple of sentences he would come back in with his mealy mouthed "Well my FEAR would be that telling people to go and play soccer is not the right thing to do". I did get the feeling that he was baiting him as well.

He only quoted the words the man actually said. I didnt see anything wrong with his line of questioning

I thought the exact opposite. The guy from the Laois county board was making a point completely different to the one he aired previously, now that he was on national radio and being called up on it. He was trying to bluff his way out of the bad space he'd boxed himself into through pure thickness.

He got on the radio, and claimed that he was only saying that he was worried about fixtures piling up for youngsters in the future.

He initially said that players should be told to not bother coming back if they were going to miss a GAA event to play soccer. He said this at a county board meeting, as a member of the board, and he claims that plenty of people at the meeting agreed with him. That IS worrying, and Joe was dead right call him up on this imo.

I just thought they put yer man on trial over his comments...like he's just some nobody from down the country who voiced an opinion. Joe gave him so much heat even after he was happy to clarify the comments. Thought yer man dealt with it well seeing as it was a nonsenseically hostile interview.

It's incredible that someone on Denis O'Brien's payroll can have the audacity to criticise McIlroy for playing a round with the elected US president. Keep politics out of sport.

Agree with this. It's sheer hypocrisy. Especially given the nature of what went on with the Esat deal. They hardly have the moral high ground.

But on a separate point, I think that Joe is in danger of boxing himself in to a corner. He says he "is finished" with the olympics. He also has no time for the FA Cup any more, so he says. And when they sent him to Brazil to cover the world cup, he carried on like he had been sent to a Russian goulag. And now he's not happy with his favourite golfer Rory McIlroy.

If you were one of the broadcasters and you were looking for somebody to present the olympic show or the FA Cup, would you really pick somebody who was "finished" with them? I dont think it's a good professional move for him to make such statements.
For people who consider themselves so worldly and open minded, our favorite sports broadcasters often out themselves as sheltered and frightfully uncultured when they venture outside of their UK and Ireland bubble to anywhere that isn't a bog standard European holiday destination. See Ken and that British Journo talking about Euro 2016 vs South Africa 2010, Ken talking about his tortuous all expense paid trips to Las Vegas to watch McGreggor, where his tour of every aging budget casino on the strip confirmed all of his preconceptions about the place or our new Irish Times columnist on Monday Night Rugby who seems to think we can't have promotion and relegation in the 6 nations because the Journo's would have to get paid to go to Georgia, Georgia for gods sake!

I'm pretty sure Ken was taking the piss, as he usually goes. I'm not sure I would describe somebody who hates Vegas as being uncultured.

Much of the criticism of South Africa and concerned poverty and the lunacy of spending billions when millions of people in Rio are living in slum like conditions.

If anyone recalls, Ken Early did extensive coverage on South Africa when he went over there. So whatever he is critical about now, it was the same back then. Rufuseric is correct, it was solely based on the poverty. He was pretty angry about how the locals were barred from setting up stalls close to the stadiums etc. He was having a dig at FIFA rather than the country. He he talked about the country , he talked about the poverty . I doubt many who went to the part of SA that Ken went to, would leave there without feeling slightly uneasy. Huge difference to glorious France (who went through an awful 2 years because of nutcases)

The conversation I referred to was on a wrap up of Euro 2016 in France and it wasn't Ken but the other journalist who he was interviewing who made the point, his argument was basically that Euro 2016 was better than South Africa 2010 because there was more nice restaurants and France was a much better country from a tourist perspective. To be fair to Ken he didn't really add anything to the discussion. There was zero mention of poverty or crime or politics, it boiled down to; from a football fan's perspective France is awesome and South Africa is a bit ****.

They were hardly going to lie though?

France IS awesome. South Africa is a bit ****. Lord watching the Confederations Cup 2009 and the World Cup 2010 was unbearable unless you turned down the volume on the tv

These big tournaments have no business being held in 3rd world countries, which SA, despite it's history and size, has become. People spend good money to get to these tournaments and it is not unreasonable to expect equality service , accommodation etc.

Have you been? It's arguably the most spectacular country on earth. It has great customer service and some of the best hotels I've ever been to, It's not like these Journo's were holed up in Jo'Burg townships, many were based in 5 star hotels on the Cape. The complaints weren't about Vuvuzela's or poor quality football, it was about the quality of the country as a visitor. It screamed to me that they were so far outside of their comfort zone and had so many preconceptions about Africa that they couldn't enjoy what was in front of them.

I think that's unfair on Ken. His complaint about the World Cup being in South Africa was aimed at FIFA. The host country pays for everything, FIFA comes along and creams off the profits and the legacy benefits for the country are minimal. or in Brazil's case ruinous. In places like South Africa and Brazil that money would have been better used elsewhere.

Head to head between Joe and Brian Kerr on paper review was entertaining.

Neither backed down, both voiced their opinions reasonably but forcibly.
Brian calling Joe on being part of the modern media focus to decry managers not getting enough time but then calling for them to be sacked was him not holding back. Joe acknowledged at the end Brian was schooling him.

    Enjoyed it.

Brian Kerr has forgotten more about football and football management than Molloy is ever going to know.

Joe Molloy gets an awful hard time on here. Have I missed something about why people don't like him?

Seemed like a reasonable exchange to me, they both made good points.

There do seem to be a few who have no time for him. Me, I think he's very good.

Am curious why others don't think he is good at what he does but to each their own I suppose.

What I am always interested in is who would they rate as a better sports broadcaster seeing as they think Joe is so bad.

Thats a ridiculous statement. It was a good exchange of views and, as Joe acknowledged, Kerr schooled him.

I agree...the amount of sh1te Joe gets on here is ridiculous. Top presenter and always enjoy listening to him. Don't understand the logic of he shouldn't express his opinions...why does he have any less right than anyone expressing opinions here?

That was a good ding-dong to end the show on.

Very funny image of Kerr getting the players into the mood by playing The Blue Nile on the team bus.

    I like Joe too.

Obvious choice, but Eoin McDevitt is miles better than Joe.

Of course, I agree it is a completely subjective matter. I actually used to really enjoy Joe but, as I posted earlier on this thread, I've found him a bit arrogant and pompous lately, and sometimes there is a sneering tone to his voice - particularly when he is challenged on something. Coupled to this is the fact that he is undoubtedly thin-skinned, and doesn't take criticism well at all (others have posted anecdotes providing evidence of this). These are not exactly enduring traits for a presenter.
