I'm getting a sales rep out from Sean Doyle and Sons (Tallaght) tomorrow . Just wondering how are the windows working out for you. Were they expensive? I'll be looking for a full 3 bed semi d double glaze windows and front and back door install in upvc or odyssey range

Got my windows and doors fitted last Friday. Very neat and tidy crew. Even hoovered up after themselves. Would be happy to recommend Sean Doyle and his lads to anyone. It was actually Johnny Doyle that I dealt with from begining to end. They have even got an order for my neighbour 4 doors down as he was also very impressed with my job.

    Thanks Doyles

We had weather glaze windows fitted two years ago. Seven triple glaze windows and a set of A rated French doors.

We had several return visits by the installer who was recommended by weather glaze .

The return visits were for the French doors which were dropping and leaving a visable air gap at the top , which light and wind was blowing through .

This problem was never resolved. additionally during the recent storms the up stairs window frames are rattling and buzzing in the wind.

I contacted weather glaze about these problems .. They promised in a letter from the top man that they would send someone to look into it.

They did not send anyone and are ignoring my e mails .

    Would not recommend them .

Try Sean Doyle Windows (branch in Tallaght, factory in Roscommon). We had replacement windows throughout for our 3 bed semi, plus windows for a new 2 storey extension. Everything was delivered on time and the installation was good, with no problems so far.

Is the gap at the top where the two doors meet? Is it in both doors or just one? Where in the country are you?

    Previously, on "Game of windows"...

Seriously, I hope you will like the recap I just put together after reading through all the 17 pages of this thread!!!
Some feedback goes back to 10 years ago, but some is quite recent.

    How to read:
After each company name, if a user posted a positive experience I put a +, otherwise I'd put a - sign.
If multiple signs are present, the oldest feedback is the first from left.
Company names were added when first mentioned, so the second half of the list mainly includes companies with recent feedback only.
I also included outstanding comments when present...

    You are all welcome! :)

    Horizon: + (expensive)
Munster Joinery (very cheap, but have many complaints) ++---+--+
    +--++-
    Senator Windows --+--+
    Royal Windows +
    Fairco +++
+ (expensive, good quality windows, but... false advertising)
Wright Window Systems -+- (in Mullingar, www.wws.ie)
    Donnellon Windows +
Regency +--- (expensive, good quality windows, bad fitters)
Bonner +-- (very cheap but one user had many issues with them, went bankrupt but opened again as http://www.vindrvs.com)
Rationel + (French and sliding doors, expensive)
Service uPVC, + (Glasnevin Industrial Estate)
Global Improvements (very very very expensive, no feedback on quality so far)
Bracken Windows & Conservatories + (The Lodge, Sheane Road, Co Kildare, Tel 045 524451)
Athlone Windows + (they use Pilkington K Glass with argon gas and Rehau frames both of which seem to be very good)
    Weatherglaze in Wexford +
Grady Joinery ++++ (good U values, middle range price) http://www.gradyjoinery.com/EnergyEfficiency.aspx
    Midland Windows +
Pendico of Clane (very cheap, no feedback yet)
Artane Windows +- (they went bankrupt but keep operating under a similar name, which is not good)

    Dk Windows + (on Southside)
Keane windows + (based behind Lidl in Fonthill Industrial Estate http://www.keanewindows.com/)
    Hillcrest Joinery -

Sean Doyle & Sons +++ (quite cheap, based in Whitestown Business Park in Tallaght)
    Superior Windows in Dundalk +
    Asgard Windows +
    Cityglass + (www.cityglass.ie)
Irish Home Glazing + (but they seem to use windows manufactured by Weatherglaze, which were said to be not reliable / poor quality)

Superb thread. Took me a while to read it all.

The rear extension has two large openings. One is 3.9m by 2.2m and the other is 2.9m by 2.2m. I'm looking into lift and slide doors. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding suppliers.

Sean Doyle, Orion and Grady Joinery seem to be getting quite positive reviews for windows but the sliding doors are a bit different to windows.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

My brother had an awful experience with Senator recently, both sales and install. It put me off them. I am currently looking at K&K windows in Gorey. I visited recently and was really impressed with the quality of their PVC windows.

Has anyone experience with this company???

One of my neighbours got new windows from them about two years ago, she must have given them the 'thumbs up' because they were back a few weeks later to do two more houses in the same street. As a result, I got them in for a quote but decided to use Wrights in Westmeath purely based on a friend's recommendation, the prices were broadly similar. K&K seemed like a professional outfit and I wouldn't have had an issue using them.

One piece of advice - always tell the sales guy that you are getting at least one other quote. I was upfront with those two companies, I brought the Wrights guy to my front door, I pointed out the houses that had been done recently by K&K and told him I was getting a quote from them, I'd say that helped keep the price down. It's the business of every salesperson to suss out the opposition and one way or another they will find out if you are talking to another supplier so best to let them know that theirs will not be the only quote you'll be looking at.

When looking at windows/ pricing what do you look for. What makes one windows company frame/glass better or more energy efficient. Is there truly A+ window on the market

So the cruks of my question what to look for when buying new windows, I presume the bulk of any window cost is the glass, what types of glass should one be looking for.

What makes a good/bad frame. Another words what questions should people be asking suppliers.

I found this thread very useful when choosing which supplier/fitter to get for replacement windows and doors for the whole house. I got 3 quotes and went with Orion Windows in the end and am delighted with the job they have done. They came in at a great price which included, Georgian windows to the front, black composite front door with 3 stained glass panels, hard wood window sills. They had all the windows and doors in on the first day and all the tidying up etc done the following day. They were very professional, arrived on time and got stuck in, left no mess anywhere. I can't believe how great the house looks now that the old wooden windows are gone - not to mention the savings I expect from energy bills and the tax rebate over the next two years. :D The sales guy Mark knew his stuff, was able to answer my big list of questions, was very helpful at all stages and accommodated early start and finish times to suit us. Such a relief to have it all done with no fuss!

I have to mention the not so good experience we had when we went to view a window and door showroom in Clondalkin some weeks ago.
The guy had called to measure and was to have a quote ready. When we got there he had no quote ready but showed us around what is a very nice showroom with lots of windows and doors on display. After walking around looking at them and then discussing what we were looking for, he said he would get a price to us by Monday, but then asked if I had a ballpark figure, I said I already had 2 quotes, he went over the list of what I was looking for and then said off the top of his head it would be XX to YY (2k to 4k more expensive) and what did I think of that. To be honest I laughed and told him the quotes I had, he was disbelieving, so I opened one of the emails on my phone and showed him the prices and breakdown (he was saying it must not include this and that), he then said that his place was in a different class (even though the type of doors etc were the same make), and that I needed to be very careful and that some of these companies had gone bankrupt several times over the years and set up again. He finished off by saying there was no point in him giving a quote, and I said I would contact him if I won the lotto, to which he replied, but then you wouldn't be living in Clondalkin.....
I investigated the two other companies on solocheck and both had been in business for years with no bankruptcy or change of name. I don't think very highly of these sales tactics, or his remark about the very place he has based his business in and I wouldn't use him on principle even if I had been one of those lucky bus drivers :-)

    Looking for an update.

We have ruled out Munster Joinery for a pair of French doors.

These are the remaining on our list, all priced similar. They all talk the talk but I need to know if they will walk the walk.

Carroll Joinery. Their NorDan type doors from Norway..
    Carlson. Their Danish doors.
    Sean Doyle. Irish manufactured.

It's now down to reviews on their fitters/back up service etc

We are about to get our Windows replaced in the apartment so this thread has been invaluable to getting us a number of potential suppliers to approach.

We are looking for something on the windows that doesn't appear to be available in Ireland. We are looking for external roller shutters for the windows as is the norm on the continent, particularly France. Is anyone aware of any suppliers that have this as an option with their windows.

Something like in this link. http://www.drutex.pl/en/products/shutters/pvc-shutters.html

I had the exact same experience in what i believe is the same place.

Went with a crowd in North Co. Dublin, and are very happy with the quality etc.

DL Windows, got quotes from 3 companies, all around the same ballpark, and went with DL in the end. Got the house done before Christmas and no issues to date, and happy with the quality.

Anyone replaced the glass in existing aluminium double glazing? We have a load of misted panes and don't have the budget to do a full replacement at the moment (as we're in a conservation area that'd require sash windows). Need at least 4/5 panes with white Georgian bars between the glass...

In the process of getting prices for windows in a new build from the usual suspects. What are the basics that I should be asking for , style and colour is nailed down by the better half. But the essentials such as thermal rating I need guidance on, what level u value should i aim for ?
P.s. $$$ must be plentiful in this window game cause after 3 weeks of ringing munster finally got a text from the rep ! So much for the personal touch!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,195 ✭✭✭Living Off The Splash

We called to Munster Joinery's Dublin office to see their Patio doors. There is a lock on patio doors called a "wind break" so they won't swing out in a gust of wind. You can lock them in place when they are half way open. The rep in Munster joinery scratched his head and said he never heard of this. Even went off to make a phone call about it. That is why we ruled Munster out.

We are still waiting for Sean Doyle to send us on a photo of their patio doors. When we called to their showrooms we were told that they were away for painting. The rep promised he would send on the photo. That is why we have ruled out Sean Doyle.

For us it is a choice between Carroll Joinery and Carlson. Their doors automatically come with this "wind break" locking mechanisim. The rep's seemed to know what they were talking about also.

Has anyone used Midland Windows (based in tullamore) before?
If so, any feedback on the quality of the installation? Their prices seem a little on high side but would live with it if quality is good.

    Cheers

Only got them to replace a broken window, they seemed quick and efficient.

I got Sean Doyles to install 7 Black PVC windows, Black French Doors and a Palladio Door, (Red inside and outside)
They were very good, and didnt leave a mess, would recommend them.
    Finished in under 2 days.

    Im in Athlone.
@Omar82 send me a pm if you want more info, as i guess we would have been looking at similar suppliers if your in tullamore

We had Sean Doyles in to install 8/9 windows and front and back doors, and would highly recommend them, place was more or less spotless after them. In fact, the alarm guy we got to reconnect the contacts left more of a mess!

We used Munster joinery, they were best on price, senator so much more expensive, I had no issues with Munster except the front door wasn't shutting very well, you had to sort of bang it closed but in fairness to them their quality guy was out to check everything before I had a chance to call them and he fixed it, it just needed a tweak.
