Jeeez, I dunno, I generally find Ian Dempsey really easy to listen to. He's an institution, he's been on breakfast radio since I was in primary school (and I'm pushing towards 40!). He appeals to young (people not even born when he started in Today FM!) and old. That's some going.

The Mario / gift grub thing is a total dead horse and the show is chocker block full of Renault ads... but Ian himself, when he gets a moment to speak between the ads and Mario, always seems like a decent guy to me. I've never got the impression he's not interested in his listeners, quite the opposite.

Be careful what you wish for. Ferg D'Arcy probably has his eyes on that slot. Then you'll really have something to complain about.

Years ago I loved today FM , well most shows. Ray Darcy was a bit of a prick but I tolerated him .

Loved Ray and JP , Tony Fenton was good, liked mat , liked pet sounds . I won't mention the breakfast show .

But its all gone down hill isnt it!!!!

Anton was a relief but good god he's gone now as well .

    Poor Tony,

Mats the only one left , and he's gotton a bit boring .

I've had to go out and buy a blur CD , the shame !!!!

Hang on .......I know what it is.... I've just turned 40 .....that's it.

    I fully agree here tbh.

I honestly think Ian could stay in the slot and continue to do well in it if someone was willing to take control and freshen it up a bit. Reducing Gift Grub to 3, well written and well produced sketches a week instead of the current 2 segments a day that are dedicated to it, and a producer needs to call him out on the humming over the end of songs.

Those two moves alone would make me listen again full time.

Does Martin McGuire still work at the station ?

He also needs to tone down the excessive laughter and fake jollity and listen a bit more to what his guests are saying. None of these are insurmountable though.

Great to hear that The Beat Goes On has gained 5,000 listeners. It's definitely the main reason why I tune into Today FM on a Saturday and Sunday. And fair play to Kelly Anne Byrne, who is doing a fantastic job.

There was an agony aunt on earlier with Delamere. It's the same woman who used to be on with Anton. Not sure Sunday AM is the best time for it.

I think I spotted the parenting woman on the podcast page for Alison Curtis's show. They seem to be trying to find slots for them on other shows.

I have to say Sunday 7pm-12.00am is the best of the week on Today FM. I'd nearly even say 4pm-12am because I'm listening to Hector, who I find annoying but actually enjoying the show.

I like Ed Smith and Songs in the key of life (Nadine O'Regan.) Kelly-Anne Byrne is on another level to anyone else in the station when it comes to music and I really like her show too.

Hector does seem to be gaining an audience to be fair. Not sure what his figures are like, but anecdotally speaking I know a lot of people who are listening to him, from a wide variety of age groups.

The excitement this morning. I thought Alison Curtis had made a Nobel winning discovery, turns out she had she tweeted a clip from Saturday Night Live.

hector is just brutal, hes there because hes mates with the PD, he is in a time slot that picks up a lot of people travelling on a sunday afternoon and where there is no real "text me in i'm driving" alternative in that time slot, just give it time and people will get sick of him as usual, every where he has gone people end up hating him

its so obvious that he doesnt give a continental fcuk about who he is talking to, as you say he does this fake laugh and a cutting comment or two and basically listens to nothing thy say, it just screams of, its nearly going home time, i'm just killing the last few minutes, i couldnt give a sh1te anymore and i'm still getting paid regardless...

its difficult to keep coming up with material for gift grub after all these years but it still entertains me for a few minutes each morning, i think dempsey is indifferent to his listeners, not unlike most radio presenters anyhow....i'm sure that unless the management make drastic changes dempsey will be there for a few more years before making the transition to 4fm or something like that.....fergus darcy in the breakfast slot? yikes!

First morning listening properly to Dermot & Dave. Big fan and while I didn't dislike it, I thought that it will take a lot of getting used to. I used really look forward to listening to them in the afternoon (couldn't listen most days) but I dont think I'll be as quick to tune in at this current slot. Also, where was Chug Stenson?!! Say Stuff, Silly Sports and Tony's club classics were my favourite parts of the show each week!!

As regards Today FM, I really feels it's lost it's identity. It was targeting a certain demographic (mid 20s on I thought) back in the hayday of Dempsey-Darcy-Foley-Fenton-Cooper and the music suited that brand. Now, it just feels like any one of the number of stations targeting the late teen market on but out of kilter e.g. Dempsey, D&D and Cooper don't fit that market whereas FD does. There's enough stations out there targeting that audience e.g. iRadio, Spin, 2FM (now!). I feel lost now listening to Today FM, the morning show is a bit tired now (agree that Gift is on too much - tho I started to get annoyed with it when Joan Burton was on every other day screeching into the mike, a pretty lazy impression I thought. Tho I love those rare times he does D'arcy or even Matt Cooper!), D&D feels a bit forced trying to fill time, M'OC I'm not gone on, FD isn't for me at all. still listen to Cooper regularly.

Finally, does Today FM make money off the 53102? Newstalk texts cost 20c which they regularly say, how much does texting 53102 cost and does much of that go to Communicorp? The reason I ask is because I notice that the text number is nearly read in each link anymore and it's getting a bit annoying.

53102 are just standard rate texts.. I think the reason you hear it in every link is because the presenters are starved for content and lack imagination! :P

I have to say that I am gonna miss Muireann - and I do hope that they bring her back soon...maybe she could replace Hector? I avoid TodayFM like the plague when he is on! So yeh bring back Muireann!

Muireann is going to be on 6pm Saturday night according to the RTE Guide

The show is growing on me. I've always liked Muireann but was never a massive fan of Lenny. But the two of them together is easy listening. Bit of banter and a good bit of music. I'll give Porter a go for a few weeks ago but I don't know how it will be better than Muireann's based on what people say about his show on 2FM

    She just confirmed it.

I think she deserves a better slot but maybe her tv commitments wont allow it. Hopefully she gets a more prime time show in the future.

Personally Muireann is everything I want in a radio presenter. Easy to listen to, inoffensive, and able to get from a to b without making a slot all about her or being overly obnoxious, but she still manages to be very personable and warm. I don't feel the hours going when I'm listening to her and that can't be said for those in slots before her or after her. I enjoyed listening to her over the weeks, her Saturday slot is a show I won't be tuning into just because I'd never listen to the radio at that time but hopefully she'll be back at a more mainstream time in the future.

I reckon she will take the lunch time slot when Al gets sick of it. The fact that Lenny is also working on the new lunchtime show makes her in my opinion the favorite to cover when Als off doing other things.. infact she's probably the go to swing jock now at Today fm
