Each to their own but I find it nothing short of cringe-worthy and tbh it doesn't really give any insight into American politics to have those two at each other once a week.

normally its more of a spread but recently its just turned into a trump fest

Do people like the tv slot with jennifer gannon and some lad?

people seem to be tuning back into 2fm, i think i might give it a go

Y'see I really don't think that's much of an option and I can't imagine I'm the only one. What to do when you're just the wrong side of 40 and your radio station has callously decided that it doesn't want you or your type anymore?

So there's pretty much an entire demographic that perhaps don't want the straight-laced-ness of RTE Radio 1 (well not all day anyway) and most certainly isn't going to listen to the inanity of 2FM or the now fully 98FM-icised Today FM.

So what's left? Newstalk - is that really all there is now?

I think you're talking about Cal Thomas and Marian McKeown - Cooper has them on every week and it's always been awkward but the dynamic is now vitriolic since Trump came in. Cooper has to shout both of them down and it's really tough to listen to. Thomas does nothing but make stupid analogies and get angry, evading questions and will not accept that republicans have ever done anything wrong. McKeown is too weak in the face of a strong character like that.

I think it was some Army General (pro trump) and that guy from New York that used to be a lawyer, who I think is a really good guest to have but after that show, I could just imagine him saying fk this.

    Edit - its Ed Hayes

Ed Hayes? Funny, I was just going to say that he gives much better insight into things in the US when he's on!

Tbh I think Ed Hayes' best days as a guest on the show are behind him. They've recently brought him back after a lengthy time away and he's really not contributing all that much - seems to have lost some of the spark he once had.

That'd be Kurt Schlichter you're talking about, I think. The guy who was in the army and now is a lawyer. He's also so far right and sounds so hysterical, it's a good job he's no longer in charge of army weapons. He was on with Ed Hayes last week. Eventually Ed Hayes just laughed at the questions and you could almost hear him asking "where did you find this guy?"

As an aside, it's a pity there is no Last Word/Matt Cooper thread here. There are ones for Sean O'Rourke and Pat Kenny earlier in the day.

Feel free to start one. I think there might be one somewhere but no harm in starting a fresh thread.

I always thought that because it's a better show and there's less to give out about, no one would be interested but there are obviously things to be discussed about it.

OK. I'll start one and see how it goes.

Micheal Walsh is the new guy. How they managed to find someone even more ignorant is some feat, he's utterly obnoxious. He really didn't like it when he tried to accuse Marian of knowing nothing about US law only for Cooper to throw back at him that she's an attorney (Walsh assumed she was a journo)

How Louise " eh, aah, eh ahhhh, coming up in a while" is still on air is beyond me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭prunudo

Matt was mentioning some upcoming event and said it's being "compered by our good friend Anton Savage"
Phil Cawley has made a few digs recently too. The older more established staff sound fairly pissed off.

Heard Cooper say that earlier, put a smile on my face, I wonder if the powers that be will discuss with him!

Presenters who have been knifed by Mac Cormac since he arrived = Declan Meehan, Jim O Neill, Derek Flood, Anton Savage.. Next on his list I'd say, Phil Cawley, Paul McLoone

I'd forgotten about Declan Meehan, I used enjoy his shows.

Is Floody still on the airwaves anywhere?

That must be Shelley Gray. I have heard her a few times on the weekends lately and she is not bad at all. Her music taste is more alternative leaning having done a stint on TXFM in its last year. Her style would attract me to Today FM.

The only program on Today FM I would listen frequently to these days would be The Last Word, but I do get bored with it quite a bit. Paul McLoone is entertaining but I would not normally hear his show. Sometimes, if I am driving that time on a Saturday night, I might tune into Kelly-Anne Byrne's The Beat Goes On (another former TXFM presenter by the way). I am way outside their current target audience though.

No. I find their D4 voices and constant inane giggling extremely irritating.

I kinda like Cal Thomas. His world view is a bit off centre to say the least imo, but at least he calls a spade a spade and says what he thinks.

Id lose it if he axed McCloone, it picked up awards recently so I don't think it might be chopped just yet

I really wish the guy who does the sports news on the breakfast show would be redeployed , he thinks he's hilarious putting a ' Bogger ' slant on everything Dempsey says , also Dempsey was always gushing in his praise of Anton savage and his upcoming show , then suddenly not a word ....with ' friends ' like the who needs enemies and all that , i'm gone off Dempsey a bit now , he's quite self- centered.

If they get rid of Paul McCloone I'll be gone. It;s just the same show over and over. I miss having healthy debate and conversations in the morning. I miss Anton doing the guess what quiz. :( so annoying

What do you expect him to do, in fairness? Anton has gone, if Ian was to moan about it and sulk on air he would getting his own P45.

I caught that one Shelly Grey who filled in for Louise Galvin last night and I have to say she sounded very good.

I was so so annoyed when they axed Jim O Neill, I am in the car a lot of sunday nights and I used to really enjoy his show, all the people texting in who were on the move on a sunday night was great company and he played some good tunes

Is Floodys planet hits gone as well? If I was ever in the car on a saturday night I used to enjoy that show

I heard matt last night when he was speaking with Helen Vaughan about her outdoor pursuits awards night and he made sure he got the dig in about his good friend Antoine who is MC for the event. I'm sure a seasoned broadcaster like cooper is highly pissed off having to work with the likes of fergus darcy and al porter plus it increasingly makes his show stand out as being out of place, can you imagine sean o rourke coming on 2fm in the afternoon after nicky byrne? it just wouldnt work and this is whats happening on todayfm, i can see the new idiotic management trying to get rid of the last word at some stage down the line and replace it with some "youth" orientated show that nobody has any interest in....

Has someone set up the last word thread yet?
