Funny thing is there are many clean weightlifters (multiple examples in the USA) with superior squatting strength to lifters from "dirty" countries yet perform worse in the classic lifts.

This is one thing I've always been interested in. A perfect example would be Oleg Chen (Russian 69kg lifter) whose best front squat is 200 but has Clean and Jerked 185, whereas CJ Cummings can front squat 210 for reps yet his best Clean and Jerk is 182. Obviously CJ is much younger than Chen and will hopefully improve his snatch in the next few years aswell but how can it be that a lifter from Russia which is traditionally a 'doper' country be weaker than a 16yr old from America?

I think the only real explanation for this is that the drugs are not used for strength-boosting purposes, but rather to aid recovery so that they can train multiple times per day and perfect their technique with more training faster than a clean lifter can. I mean, with the way the tests go today, there'd be very little strength boosts to be gotten from the most popular steroids since the half life would be very low so close to competitions.

    I have a feeling. And it's only a feeling.

It's that the upper limit of drug free and non drug free potential is roughly the same.

BUT in order to achieve the upper limit of drug free potential you need ot invest 20 (say) years and remain injury free and committed over the at time period.

You can short cut it and do it in 1/4 or 1/2 the time with juice, so that's why people go there.

I have nothing to back that up, just a feeling that if you train hard, eat well and last long enough to realise your potential, it'll be pretty close to the non tested athletes.

I'd agree with you there ... in my short time lifting the trajectory of improvements from those who I've trained with who went down the PED route is massive .. however they are still miles behind those who have put in the decade or so of work.

I think I said in the achivement thread that I'm training at a community centre in eastern germany which is literally straight out of an old russian sports documentary. There's plenty of powerlifters and weightlifters but also a few young javelin throwers and it turns out their coach is a former olympic gold medalist from Seoul 1988. How cool is that?!

I find their training methods hilarious though, as they all do some sort of hang split snatches which just look mad, and all of the exercises they do were part of her program back when she was an athlete.

Greg Nuckols did some research into this a while back and said (I think) that a lifter will peak ~10 years into their training anf that drugs (can) add on average around 10%

Well I haven't really talked with her as she's always very serious when the team is training, which is completely understandable, but she always salutes everyone seems like a nice person. She's definitely a tough coach though as the girls and lads always look shattered after training.

Most of the information I have about her is from google really, her name is Petra Meier (Petra Felke when she was an athlete) and she actually held the WR (78.9m)until the javelin design changed to make it harder due to dangers for high jumpers in the field. Her son is actually part of the team and he's actually a really nice guy and a very good thrower so I've heard; I think he's done 70m+ and he's still quite young aswell.

Interestingly the city/town I'm living in, Jena, seems to be a mecca for javelin as the gold medallist in Rio, Thomas Röhler, actually comes from here and lives here too, and the long-standing WR by Jan Zelezny was actually set here too.

I just think it's class to have that presence in the place you train at everyday. Most of the lifters are just amateur students and workers doing it for fun yet I can only imagine the history of the room we train in and all the hard training done by some athletes who used the same equipment I use, back in the DDR times.

He has a squat and bench guide as well. Have them downloaded and in my to read folder in Dropbox. Meaning of course they'll sit there unread forever. Much like so many articles in my bookmark folder.

Interestingly the city/town I'm living in, Jena, .

Hey, have you seen NSU German History X?.. (ok this isn't related to the javelin). Its based in Jena.

Im looking to join a gym in the clondalkin/tallaght/crumlin/walkinstown area that has a good free weights section, can anyone recommend?'

I've tried out Energie in Parkwest but there's not enough squat racks and only one pull up/chin up bar (why!) - i've been using my own home gym but want to join somewhere now.

Dont mind paying extra for a gym thats not rammed and I can comfortably use the squat racks without waiting to long.

    Any suggestions?

No I haven't but I must have a look now. Jena has an interesting past with Neo Nazi's and there's actually a rally coming up next week which will be interesting to watch since the counter demonstration tends to outnumber them 5:1 or something like that.

It's definitely interesting living here as most middle-aged locals speak no english as russian was their second language. One of my housemates also had an 'incident' with some drunken guy who chased her late at night because of her darker skin tone. The town itself is lovely though and I actually really like living here.

Where do you guys put your phone while working out? On the floor beside you, waistband, armband?

Need something as I listen to music and track my workouts, don't want it falling out if my pockets

Armband is best, pocket is pain in the hole cause phone can fall out or generally just get in the way when you're actually doing exercises

Get a cheap set of Bluetooth headphones out of a euro shop. No cables to get caught up when setting up for a lift

I got a pair for 13 euro off Amazon and they're great. I still take my phone out of my pocket doing deadlifts though

    Just saw this on Flyefit:
    Pump & Sculpt
A combo lifting/toning class featuring a mix of bodyweight, dumbbells and barbells to sculpt and tone your body's musculature system into shape. Worried about getting big muscles? Don't be. This workout is designed to make you long, lean and sexy, without getting bulky.

Sad to see Flyefit perpetuating this sort of common misconception about lifting.

They refer to "toning" through exercise twice.
Perpetuates the idea that you can suddenly find you have muscles that are too big.
They use the word "long"??? These exercises are going to make you or your limbs longer, are they?

    Condescending guff.

    Don't be so silly.

I bet you don't even know what condescending means.
