It's great to have these essentially meaningless games to try out the likes of Olding and really test the level of the young bucks like Dillane and Furlong. I'd be very content to lose the next two games if it gave us solid answers about the future of some fringe players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭Mr Tickle

Is Olding an option to cover 10 at international level? I know he does it for ulster but does he give us the possibility to leave madigan out of the 23 and have 2 outside backs on the bench.

    Eh...what?

We lose the next two games and let a series win over SA slip and I won't be happy no matter what the circumstances. I'm genuinely confused as to whether this was sarcasm or not.

Schmidt has mentioned him in the conversation to cover 10 but I imagine he would be more of an emergency option at the moment - especially if he starts. Can't see Madigan not making the bench.

He started at 10 for the U20s (and he's listed as a 10 on the IRFU website) but yeah, 10 is far too important a role to take the risk having very inexperienced cover. Madigan will bench.

To be honest, Olding has looked poor at 10 for Ulster. Now he hasn't played much rugby in the last 2 seasons and even less at 10 than 12 or 15. If he was ever to be seen as a possible back up 10 at Ireland level he'd need to have played there and spent a season with a kicking coach. His kicking from hand and tee was rubbish - understandably. He is a hugely skilled player but he isn't an international 10. In fact I'd take Marshall at 10 ahead of him if an emergency came up.

When is the team announcement? Tomorrow, I assume?

You should know this well by now Teferi

    1) As late as possible
    2) And not before every other team playing international rugby this weekend has named theirs

Ladies first as they say, or althought I wouldn't say that directly to the SA's face.

I think our team came out first last week....

Ah in fairness, we tend to bring it out as late as possible, in general. I think I've seen fans from every country mention it, it's started to become a meme.

Yeah, think if we still lose the series, last Saturday's win will have been for nothing. A few snippets for the highlights reel but all be a bit anti-climatic, kind of like some of our WC experiences. Such a great opportunity for them now

5 changes for SA. Mostly on the bench, I think? No Loooood and no Jesse Kriel, even on the bench.

I couldn't care less about a June tour. If we keep making everything a top priority we'll never get to experiment and learn.

Doesn't look like SA are panicking anyway, no major changes (de Jager is injured afaik).

delighted with that team to be honest, we should definitely go for the juggler on saturday...

wonder why kriel and de jager were dropped completely?

Du Toit in is a plus for them, but mapoe still there is a plus for us. Jantjies will be under sever pressure to control the positional game, and im not sure he has that control in his box of skills.

combrinck covering 11 - 15 on the bench.....

Basically the same starting 15 as last week. They'll have got a bollicking during the week and will be demons on the field to make up for last Saturday. All about redeeming themselves.

Didn't realise we had it in for jugglers. Or is it one juggler in particular?

De Jager is injured; ankle I think. Duane Vermuelen is also injured (knee) and hasn't trained this week so far, so that's a risk for them too.

Murray Kinsella says Irish team coming in the next 10 minutes with some big surprises.
