I believe the machines are supposed to be designed track the passage of items into the storage area, but I would believe some “entry level models” lack such sophistication and I imagine these are the ones that are being replaced.

I was at the bottle bank this morning disposing of my glass bottles and cans and noticed that the drinks can bank was almost full. I must remember to crush my cans before bringing them to the bottle bank.

I've given up using plastic bottles as a result of this scheme, but others in my household still use tin cans for their drinks.

A way to improve the system is to have a plastic bottle bank next to the glass bottle banks. I'd use that.

It's almost like the DRS was designed as a sop to the plastics manufacturers so they can continue their oil based single use plastics.

Apologies if this has been asked already (it's a long thread :-) ) but is this DRS scheme effectively banning all foreign sodas and drinks that are in bottles or cans? Most foreign firms are hardly going to get special barcodes just for Ireland... I'm thinking of the likes of Asian Supermarkets and the like.

    Is this not illegal?

If they're not part of official scheme Lidl should not be charging a deposit, even in the transition period.

Quite simply the biggest scam ever seen on this island

The thread is totally out of Sync again on Desktop FF

I am very surprised at the lack of exceptions in the scheme/legislation, the departures area of airports is an obvious place that should have been excepted. There was someone on Radio na Gaeltachta the other day saying that the offshore Islands should have been excepted which is probably fair as I doubt it would ever be viable for a shop on Tory island to invest in a machine

Yes. Every shop is obliged to do this, there are a few acting the twat about it - report them to re-turn if so.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,498 ✭✭✭✭L1011

You can use the international barcode, pay a slightly higher registration fee, and put the logo on as a sticker. There are specialist importers already doing this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭ForestFire

    I'm deliberately asking for cash,

Even had a full shopping trolley with me and got my daughter to cashin the DRS, as it's her pocket savings for recycling....

And not to pay for my shopping 😀

What will that achieve in reality?

And why should the muppets who are being fleeced through this scam be the ones who police it?

It really is win win for Re-Chit-Chit isn't it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,110 ✭✭✭reubenreuben

Yes and this is the weak reply I get from Return.

'We've received your enquiry in relation to barcode checking.  Customers are of course entitled to a refund of any deposit they have paid. If they can return to the store with the undamaged containers and ask for a member of management, they will ensure that she gets the refund.'

They shouldn't be charging the deposit in the first place. This just winds people up.

I've been to a few takeaways over the last few weeks. All the cans they are selling don't have any logo on and are imported from abroad. Usually Poland or Holland. The Irish market is tiny in relation to rest of Europe so I agree with the takeaways using the free market to keep costs down.

Total cop out answer as usual from Re-turn, washing their hands of all responsibility, but still laughing all the way to the bank.

This is up there with call Re-turn if you don't have an RVM near you and we'll help you.

A pack of patronising lying gombeens.

When you say "you can", what you mean is the importer can. For small specialist importers, how many are doing this? No-one knows. I expect many of the asian drinks to disappear from our shelves.

    That's brilliant - was it Bogmaster I wonder :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,498 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Any of them that want to stay in business.

If they were going to disappear, they'd be going or gone already - its has been months since new stock has been allowed without logo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,835 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Has been covered before. Some say it's interference in the free market and the EU free market etc. Others say all EU countries will align to same system. I guess that many outlets will continue to get in stock not in the scheme and sell it cheaper. Who's going to be enforcing for Foley & Smyth. They think the LAs are but why would they and under resourced as it is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,963 ✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

That is total fuckin cop out. "Oh they were going to disappear any way". Give me a break. Even for you that is low.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,498 ✭✭✭✭L1011

You appear to have completely misunderstood this. If they're still on shelves, the distributors have adapted to the rules.

Care to explain your last sentence there, please? In detail.

I had the pleasure of staying in Leenane, co Galway last weekend and due to lack of ribena on sale, had no choice but to pay the scam in order to get a cold drink (vithit). Just for the laugh, i i used re-ching chings site to see where i could return the bottle to get my money back.

It told me Letterfrack, 19+ km away. And if anybody is familiar with the roads from leenane to Letterfrack, not exactly a great road connection. That would be a 38km round trip.

And as for the return it with your big shop brigade, there is nothing in Letterfrack that you cant buy in the general store in Leenane.

    Convenient for all though eh?

And if you dont want to do a 38km journey, well i guess they just keep your money. Amazing how many scenarios end with 'they just keep your money'

So I chased this up again with Re- turn.

I asked the question. 'But how can Lidl charge the deposit knowing fine well the cans did not have the return logo on them?'

Re-turn replied. 'Lidl has confirmed they have not sold this barcode since March, as they can see this by their till system. They are willing to give you back a deposit as a goodwill gesture.'

I replied. 'Well they are not telling you the truth as I bought these cans in may. I have the receipt to prove it.'

    I am awaiting a reply....

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,938 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

The chances that person contact Lidl is zero.

They are calling you a liar because they don't want to help you or listen to how the scheme is fleecing you.

They don't care because they don't have to.

Let's see if they reply. This sort of treatment of the public who are mainly trying to be a good citizen just causes civil unrest in longterm. More dumping, damage to return equipment etc.
