Applied performance specialist manager for Kitman labs according to his LinkedIn

So he has brought the entire U20 backroom team with him. All good people so that's a definite positive. I thought either Rice or Barry would stay with the U20's, particularly Rice who looks like a future manager in the making himself.

I hope we get the U20 appointment correct as next year's team has a great chance of doing back to back Titles in my opinion. There are not too many of them ready just yet for senior IC so that makes it even more important that they continue to develop properly in a good environment.

Lung is definitely the correct appointment and I wish him and his team the very best of luck. There will be bumps on the road and we as supporters must remain calm and back them through thick and thin.

Anything can happen with under 20s. It's become more like minor in predicting performances. I do know a few of the Munster teams will obviously be strong but Kilkenny have a good chance with a young team. To be honest I was hoping one of the Under 20 management would stay with the 20s for continuity.

Big step up for the lads. Huge gulf between under 20 and senior but Kiely did it successfully. I dont see Kilkenny getting to a senior final next year and that's ok. There's going to be so much of a change that the shadow Cody casts will still be strong. The loss of Carey at wing back is big but could Fennelly be enticed back for a year, not that Mossy Keoghan isn't doing a good job.

There's alot of teams going through change. Tipperary, Cork,Kilkenny,Waterford, Dublin. Galway will be there or therabouts but they arent a young side,Mannions a year older. David Burke is looking his age now. All the contenders have potential but youd be a brave man to bet against Limerick. They cast a long shadow at the moment.

Best of luck to the new selectors. Conor Phelan will be the link between this years and next years management team. It will be a big step up but Lyng has being around the senior set up before and they all have plenty of experience playing for KK at senior level except O Donovan who i dont know much about TBH. I also think it will encourage younger players who are not underage a boost that they may get a call up.

As for the U20s will McGarry or Martin Comerford step in there.

As for young Carey i wish him best on his travels. He had a great year and will be missed. World travel is something i reccommend to any person.

I would think that all the top counties except Limk Clare and Wexford are in managerial transition. Will be interesting to see. Some will excel while others will dissappoint.

Michael Fennelly would be a great fit for the U20 Job

Very pleased with Derek Lyng's backroom team. He needed to put his own stamp on it and he most certainly has. Conor Phelan has managed club teams and been involved with county camogie team in the recent past. I'm sure he could command a handsome pay packet by going elsewhere but obviously is willing to throw in his lot for Kilkenny, as are Lyng, Rice, Barry, O'Donovan and others. Glad Lyng held onto Phelan.

I agree the u20 job is attractive but it's only still attractive If 3 or 4 lads aren't used with the senior next year. If they are it will weaken them. I seen eoin Lyng playing u19 recently and he was excellent he looks a very good prospect.Danny glennon Is another good chap.Brian dowling could be in the mix fir the job aswell although I would like to see fennelly involved.

I'm suprised like others the whole crew came with Lyng and one or two didn't stay with the 20s. Best of luck. Hopefully a few fresh faces will be a help. They definitely worked on puckouts and things with the u20s so this can only be a good thing

Conor phelan is a good lad and is a gentleman.

I think anyone that has designs on the senior job down the road has to go for this job.

I don't think too many of the U20s that are still underage next year are ready for senior inter County and Lubg himself will know that better than anyone - there is maybe one exception. Most of those chaps are only starting to play club hurling at adult level this year. So they have a bit to go in terms of their physical and hurling development.

However if I was Lyng I would definitely bring in all players from that side or panel that are overage next year into next year's extended panel if they are deemed good enough. With the split season you can't afford to let any of these slip through the net.

Wouldn’t you think there ‘d be a bit of urgency about picking the new U20 manager seen as it’s a new early start. A lot of people have Michael Fennelly in mind but is he even interested, I’d love if he was, I was wondering would McGarry and Gorta,, Brian Dowling and crew, this has to be taken very seriously the minor management team was put back In unopposed after been beaten by Laois who in turn were beaten by Offaly. Did it even go up for tender?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,938 ✭✭✭dzer2

The minor management were given a 2 year term and were only ratified as that is the process. Really not sure about them picking the best players have a feeling it will be Kierans and the CBS again.

From what I've heard Mick Fennelly was saying after he lost/left the Offaly job that he didn't want to do any management for the next few years as he's doing his PhD. Think he likes the coaching end more by the sounds of it and might take a coaching roll with a team. I'm sure all that would change if the right opportunity presented itself.

Heard there were serious ructions after the Village loss to the Bridge last Saturday. Not that there is anything wrong with that it shows lads care and it can help galvanise a team if dealt with right. Not sure how it has come about but apparently Brian Cody is joining the management team as a selector at their next training session.

I personally would have the Bridge ahead of the Boro in the current number two spot to try and knock the Shamrocks off their perch. They have looked very impressive this year so far and I think they would be the closest to the Shamrocks in a championship game as long as they don't play Nicky Cleere as sweeper again🙄. The Boro are good and are hurling well but they would need a huge game from a lot of lads in their first year senior to beat the Shamrocks, hopefully they will continue to improve but for me their not at that level yet.

On the Ballyhale front Paddy Mullen is apparently gone away for work for 4-6 weeks🤷‍♂️ Darren Mullen and Brian Cody has been struggling with injury all year so their roles maybe limited. The thing that should worry everyone else is their winning these games with young players and without many of the stars. Put them back in and they will be a serious proposition. Not sure when TJ will hurl with them he was named on the bench the last day not sure did he play any minutes, I'm sure he'll be there come championship and it's not like he needs the games. I'm not sure if Joey will return although ever effort is being made to cajole him back for the championship from what I hear.

The Shamrocks are scoring well and they still have Joe Cuddihy, Brian Cody, Colin Fennelly and TJ Reid to go back into their forward line. Frightening.

Two enjoyable intermediate games today. Thomastown will be dissapointed they lost that game against young Irelands. They led for most of the match but a Sean carey goal kick started a come back and they ran out two points winners. It was great to see zach Bay Hammond come on he made one great run up the sideline. He's hurling is rusty but he should be an addition. Thomastown were missing a few noticeably John Joe but gowran were down Paul holden.

Conahy will be absolutely disgusted to lose that match against the shocks. They were cruising and were 8 points uo but they conceded two late goals one just on the stroke of full time.

Intermediate is so even. Thomastown are rightly favourites and although the wind was hard on players Thomastown tried to be too clever at times and it broke down.

Inistioge won by a point against O'Loughlins in Inistioge this evening but we won't be winning a huge amount more if we play like that too often. Leahy at times looked very good but he hit some bad wides. Pat Lyng did well in the half back line but O'Loughlins won a lot of ball at times which must be a concern and some of the marking from Inistioge was dreadful at times. Jim Ryan did very well when he got the ball and Kevin Murphy hit some good points but also some dreadful wides. Not the greatest match and the standard was very poor at times particularly in the middle of the second half.

Anyone who's currently not on Senior panel at moment ( apart from Liam Blanchfield ) who is really standing out over last few weeks??

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,875 ✭✭✭blackcard

I thought Thomastown Gowran was an even enough game. Town had a penalty saved and hit the post late on but Gowran missed a few goal chances also. Both hit a number of wides. Hope that I am wrong but I see Zack as a superb athlete but not a superb hurler.

Daylight robbery as Shock scored two injury time goals to come from 8 points down late on to beat Conahy who must have hit 20 wides. Doesn't hide that Shock were poor. James Bergin did okay, Tom Phelan anonymous.John Power now playing wing back.

Martin's very very poor against Dunnamaggin, on a downward slope.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,875 ✭✭✭blackcard

I thought Liam Moore and Andy Gaffney did well in the couple of Boro matches I saw. Shane Murphy for Glenmore. Niall Shortall of Ballyhale looks to be a tidy hurler but slight. Darragh Corcoran also playing well. Another Boro man, Bill Sheehan at centre forward. Played deep and picked up loose ball, but couldn't see him getting that room at county levels. David and Liam Blanchfield both playing well for the Bridge as are Sean and Enda Morrissey but 3 of these have been tried before. Conor Heary of OLG. Evan Carroll. Also the Gowran goalkeeper?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,733 ✭✭✭brookville

Think gowran got 1-5 to no score in the closing minutes. Thomastown I don't think scored. Ttown were 4 or 5 ahead most of the game. The penalty was a turning point but gowran goalie looks very suspect under the high ball. He saved the penalty well but the post saved his blushes when he came out flapping at a high ball. Drea at 14 for them is a good target man. Thomastown had plenty of movement I just thought they tried to be too clever and over doing it. It was a game they should of saw out.Theres still question marks over ttown when they're In a battle

TTown bellies usually too full of beer for a battle after a wkend off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,875 ✭✭✭blackcard

Luke Connellan got a point for Thomastown with a few minutes to go. Town's biggest lead in the second half was 6 points. Gowran created more goal chances and created more chances overall but hit more wides. I felt it was inevitable that Gowran were going to convert 1 of their goal chances and that the game would be in the melting pot. Ted Drea was causing problems for the defence. Having said that, Town look the classier team but need to bury a team when they are on top

Who is over Thomastown this year ? Winning 5 leagues in a row and no championship is a mental challenge now for Ttown.

Noel Doherty galmoy,John brennan and Sean Kelly.

They've plenty of good hurlers and maybe that loss will do them no harm but I just feel there's a soft spot in them.

Let's not forgot a lot of teams have failed alot of times getting over the line. The rower and tullaron before eventually winning.
