First olympic transgender athlete to compete at Tokyo 2020 **MOD NOTE IN OP**

Laurel Hubbard, the first olympic transgender athlete will represent New Zealand in weightlifting.

Good to see we're taking baby steps...

Mod Note - Please stick to the topic of the thread, this is not a replacement for the Gender Identity thread which is still under mod review.

In addition, a reminder re pronouns and misgendering. Cards/bans will be handed out for breaching this

From the inception of Boards the founders, initial users, Admins and staff have been fully subscribed to the idea of inclusivity and they/we still are. This is where the very basic 'don't be a dick' rule came in and the mod direction that started this thread was intended as an implementation of that.

We're asking for you to have the absolute minimum of respect for any trans person in addressing them or referring to them in the way they have indicated that they prefer or else in a gender neutral manner. This policy is an extension of the 'don't be a dick' rule and is unlikely to change.

The on-thread warning that kick started this thread will be updated to say the 'preferred pronouns' instead of 'correct pronouns'.

    Thanks for all contributions here.

How can someone stand on a podium and accept a medal like this? It’s not a victory, it’s a joke.

First they came for the socialists...

I actually hope the person wins. Just to see the ultra woke try to square how they support a transgender person breaking down barriers while at the same time bemoaning the patriarchy for preventing a biological woman from winning a gold medal.

Should be good **** and giggles

It’s gold they’ll be winning alright, from the mental gymnastics

Just goes to show though that even in the world of 'equality', gender quotas and 'positive discrimination' - men will still win in the end.

Anyone who deems themselves feminist wouldn't throw under the bus those women who don't think this is fair. But plenty of those self appointed "feminists" do just that.

It’s funny, performance enhancing drugs are banned but this athlete gets all the benefits of puberty, strength/bone density/better recovery etc etc and that for some reason is a level playing field? And there’s no point in arguing that she doesn’t have the testosterone levels now, them benefits don’t disappear. To use the performance enhancing drugs analogy again, one can use them, train like a lunatic, come off, test clean and keep 90% of the benefits.
Why the need to be so woke? Can’t sport just say, “yes you are female now but we’re born male and got the advantage of puberty so it’s the male pool for you”.

Would it not be fairest to compete in transgender only competition?

The best suggestion I saw all day was for a transgender games.

I'm not going to rant because it's of little value, but there's simply no circumstances where entering a person born with male physiology in a competition for people of female physiology can be fair or equitable or in compliance with the Olympic ideal.

What happens when a male to female boxer who transitioned at age 28 fights a cis gender woman?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,231 ✭✭✭Hercule Poirot

If this was something like archery, where the discipline is more weighted towards skill then I don't think anyone would have an issue with it.

    But weightlifting? Seriously?

We all know what will happen. But it's easier to put your head in the sand than speak out against it.

She'll win f**k all. WOKES can't compete with the age old Olympic tradition of hardcore performance enhancing DRUGS.

I look forward to watching the fallout immensely...

A 6ft 2 rangy middle weight guy, now identifies as a female .... enters the ring to fight an... ‘actual female’... 5’ 10... same weight division...

Women's sport will be eradicated soon enough as this continues. Clearly its now equality and inclusion to exclude biological women and replace them with trans women.

    What a heroine.

In previous competitions, Hubbard (offspring of a millionaire) displaced athletes from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The East German athletes were female at least albeit trying to emulate male traits.

I feel very sorry for the woman who missed out on a place at the Olympics because of this.

Who has probably trained for years and will now miss out. Seems very unfair to me.

And it seems on this topic, sport is conveniently either important or unimportant depending on what’s being argued. It’s important when a transgender person wants to feel included. But when it’s mentioned that a woman has to be displaced to make that happen, suddenly the attitude is “Sure, it’s just sport. Who cares?”.

It won't go down well in Japan. Especially with there only being local fans at events.

Pundits will be on eggshells. Anyone that criticizes it will be culled.

Pundits and commentators should study how the East German athletes of the ‘70s and ‘80s were spoken about.

South Park had this exact plot a few years ago.

Heather Swanson (a parody of Randy "The Macho Man" Savage from WWF) parachuted himself into women's decathlon competition and destroyed the competitors.

Due to political correctness, the women had to express their support for Heather's inclusion.

The whole situation is absurd. A top-class male is stronger and faster than a top-class female.

Well, that’s the thing. Hubbard isn’t exactly top class. And has qualified at far older an age than anyone else in the history of the event. I believe the previous oldest was 35.
