Not that I agree with calling them clowns...

No - nor are any of them claiming credit for it either.

Line 2 - exactly the point I was raising.

I know they didn't develop them - but do you know that they weren't involved in peer reviewing the data, efficacy, side effects etc? The vaccine effort has been one which has involved people right across the scientific and academic research community. Who is to say that the people who did develop them didn't review some paper written by one of them as they racked their brains to think what they needed to do? How well do you know their research areas/expertise?

Calling them clowns, is ridiculous. Anyway, I'm afraid I might be arguing with.....

Yes I'm sure Pfizer got a neuroscience associate professor from Ireland to peer review arguably the most important vaccine data in history.

Yet you were bleating about people criticising them in case they were involved?

How is the data misrepresented? I'm genuinely curious. These are all real reports as far I am aware, sourced from a government database.

The context that all symptoms, illnesses and deaths post vaccine, irrespective of cause will be included in such reports and no analysis of the occurrence when compared with expected levels of similar illnesses is included.

The sole purpose of some in sharing such information is to give the false impression that every single report logged was caused by the vaccine

Anybody have any guess what travel will be like from England later in the year? Particularly given the EU Vaccine Passport plans, I was all excited until I remembered... Brexit 😞

This was also mentioned in yesterday's NPHET briefing and apparently sectors being targetted/considered are meat factories, education and third level

For the 2nd time - how do you know that some of the above didn't publish some paper, research, peer review their data, etc which they referred to in their literature review as they sat with an empty conical flask and wondered what they need to put in it?

Anyway, I'm sure you are the 2nd coming of Einstein if you think calling somebody who has studied for 20-30 years and reached the top of their game a clown is appropriate, so I'll wish you a good day.

A spokesperson said no vaccine was wasted - good! There will be stories like this as they wrestle with getting the system right and it should work more smoothly when we get to the age groups.

I'm in a good mood today so I'll ignore your condescension regarding my intellect.

Well they probably have given the brain blood clots issue. Do you know how peer review works?
You seem to think the Irish scientific community are a pack of spud munching Paddies is it? The Executive Director of EMA is an Irish woman. There AZ research was headed by an Irish man. I don't for 1 second think we couldn't have our academics involved in the research and associated peer review.

EU vaccine passport proposal, includes negative test if not vaccinated

Unfortunately it might not benefit us. Talks underway about adding more countries to the quarantine list. France Germany and italy could be added. It’s about the variants the f****g variants. If that’s the case it would have to be permanent if they are afraid of bringing variants in.

Just a guess as someone who will be landbridging to France from the UK on the 2nd of July.
By then, the UK will have had high percentage of their adult population vaccinated with 1 dose and their case numbers will be negligible.
Historically, they are quite pro vax and will have no trouble reaching herd immunity.

The French on the other hand will be in a somewhat worse position than the UK due to lower supply and a more vaccine hesitant population,
So the French won't be able to make life difficult for the UK on the basis of Covid cases, but may do so on the basis of Brexit.
The UK may make life difficult for people returning from France and other EU countries on the basis of both Covid and Brexit.

As an Irish passport holder, I don't expect much difficulty in either direction, apart from probably a longer time waiting in the non-UK cars lane at the BorderForce checkpoint in Calais.

Surely with the 112k AZ that came in last night, they should be adding an extra ~100k to that total for next week?

We may (hopefully) go over target next week

Terrible wording "how is it that 125,000 are being scheduled next week" should he have included "only 125,000" or is he asking how come more are being scheduled than have arrived?

Nobody is questioning all Irish scientists  People are talking about a specific few whose opinions run contrary to what we're hearing elsewhere and don't appear to be shifting when new evidence is presented, which we'd expect.

Yes I've been involved with the process many times.
You seem to think the Irish scientific community are a pack of spud munching Paddies is it?

As a member of that community, absolutely not.

I've no doubt Killeen et al are excellent at what they do, bit I don't agree with how they go about their messaging to the public.

That's all way off topic anyway so we'll leave it at that

Probably because they've been holding more AZ back on account of the erratic supplies. 125K will take in a very big chunk of Group 4.

It will take many more weeks to identify cohort 4, maybe months. Why not do them in parallel with the next cohorts?

Stupid decision imo that will slow everyone else down while we wait for the inevitably gigantic cohort 4 list to be identified.

This isn't due in until the summer, would be surprised if we weren't in it as its for all of Europe.

Also on the additional countries onto the list that looks to have hit a few snags but probably for another thread but no it's not permanent.

They are experts in their field of expertise. That doesn't mean they can't be clowns when talking about other topics.

They're humans like the rest of us. Smart humans, but still absolutely capable of getting things wrong.

Kingston Mills is Professor of Experimental Immunology, School of Biochemistry and Immunology, Trinity College Dublin (TCD)
Antony Staines is a researcher with a background in epidemiology.

They aren't accountants or solicitors being asked about infectious diseases you know!

Anyway lets leave it at that.

Some more info from HSE briefing:

-Dose 1 start for age 70-74 next week while completing Dose 1 for 75-79

-Some Cohort 7 likely to be done in parallel with Cohort 4.

-Aged 65-69 start in mid April via Portal
-No choice of vaccination centre on Portal - will be assigned
-Will be opportunity to reschedule vaccination appointment

    -600K J&J expected for Q2

On what basis I wonder. Proximity? That'd be DCU for me or Croke Park. As I don't drive, it'd make any other location a bit of a pain.

Sounds very positive. Martin suggested the portal wouldn't be ready till week 3/4 though (and being an IT project there will likely be delays). Wonder what happens if they're ready with the vaccines for the 65-69 year olds before the portal is ready.

Kingston Mills has support around here because he isn’t one of a group of “experts” invited on to tell us all about their plan to lock people in their houses til September so we can have no Covid cases for 5 days until someone introduces it into the country via a ferry or from Northern Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,302 ✭✭✭Economics101

Getting as many as possible vaccinated is hugely important. To do that you have to make it relatively convenient. Offering people no choice of location is going to make for difficulty and inconvenience for some people. This will surely lead to a lower % being vaccinated.

This, in addition to the HSE's double-booking of its own staff does not inspire confidence. And the overall information system necessary to track vaccinations for eventual booster shots could be a real nightmare, given the HSE's stunning record in IT.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 727 ✭✭✭NeuralNetwork

In IT system is only as good as the information put into it. It's possibly more of an issue with some administration screw up that's caused double bookings. However, it needs to be followed up and figured out.

We would be aiming towards zero screw ups on this.
