Italy has fairly draconian mask rules too.

Anywhere to go this summer that has a reasonable approach?

I know it's hard to believe but you really do get used to the masks outdoors.

As pointed out above, you don't in reality need it while sitting on a bar terrace or while you are lounging on the beach.

My number one hobby is traveling, I’m dying to get away but I’m pretty resigned to it being in August / September earliest probably, I actually need a holiday, as does everybody...

If Greece is also mandating beach masks, we'll be doing a lot more boat days this year than we normally would.

Coveney on virgin saying "we will be more cautious than other eu countries". He mentioned twice about vaccinated people may be able to travel later in the summer, you'd think the presenter would pull him on this and explain but no.

I think realistically it’s only going to be fully vaccinated people will get full travel privileges in the short term anyway.

    Son of a *****!

I guess we should know a lot more over the next 4 or 5 weeks but what is the point with Belfast up the road.

I just don't get it, ok so we may not make it to 80% of adults with at least one dose by the end of June but we won't be far off at all.

What exactly are we so worried about that most other countries do not appear worried about?

It's already becoming apparent that case numbers of several hundred a day is not leading to increased hospitalisations. Primarily due to the vaccine roll out to the elderly and vulnerable.

Bit of a damper on my mood this evening :(

Ireland and Germany tried to delay the green cert until Sept. The EU said No and mid July at latest. Our govt's main concern was the ability to.produce an app and produce the data required. Allegedly to confirm a person's Vax stays requires 4 phonecalls ! Perish the thought we might have a HSE database with the information required. So EU citizens will probably be allowed in but we will get the usual platitudes nonsense and BS from Donnelly and Ryan. Article in IT has head of Travel industry highlight that no govt dept has taken ownership of the green cert yet !. NPHET\Govt don't want Paddy leaving this summer ...

    1. Terrible “jounalism” by the presenter not to wuestion him on the EU travel cert

    2. Ive been beating this drum a long time but every single government big hitter has come out with this clearly deliberate reference to travel being onlybfor the vaccinated. Its a clear ploy to try and muddy the waters so that people will think that they wont be eligible to travel. And it’s clearly working - i asked a girl in work yesterday had she heard of the eu travel cert and she said “is that the travel pass for vaccinated people”.

We might be all clued in here but the vast majority of people believe what the government and RTE tell them. And this promotion of disinformation is really really bad form by the government.

Anyways, if the the travel fine is gone its all irrelevant. However government ministers will suddenly appear claiming that travel insurance isnt valid etc etc under a essential travel only advisory. Even though EU countries are currently under “proceed with a high degree of caution advisory”.
    Lie after lie after lie.

I think most journalists in this country think its a vaccine passport. He explained at the start the rules of the cert but then contradicted himself by saying only vaccinated can travel and she didn't question him on it. I hope it is all lies but it sounds like the government will put extra regulations in place for people only using tests to travel like isolation for 14 days at home or something like that

With the inter county travel allowed is there any restriction on going to Belfast for the day?

I wouldn’t worry too much tbh.
This Friday is the official announcement on the UK green list and it looks brilliant.

Spain , Portugal , Malta are all being touted to be included.
All travellers are free to international travel from 17th of May.

Belfast airport won’t know what hit it .

I think MM is eager to get travel up and running again.

“” Micheál Martin also said that Ireland would be part of the EU programme on travel and will restore connectivity as soon as it is safe to do so. He said this was crucial for aviation and tourism.””

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,501 ✭✭✭dalyboy

Slightly off topic however still connected to travel , has anyone noticed how obtuse our government are ?
I mean they know Belfast airport is easily accessible to over 1.5 million Irish citizens yet they’re making catastrophic economic decisions that’ll really affect our travel industry.

Same applied to their announcement this week about raising the price of alcohol in the rep of Ireland.
Similarly easily bypassed driving from Dublin 50 mins up the M1 and filling your car bootfrom Sainsbury’s .

It’s like they’ve a screw loose and they’ve fundamentally lost the run of themselves

The crucial bit is highlighted above .

Green card - Fully vaccinated or negative pcr test or recovered from covid previous 6 months. Reading between the lines of what Simon said tonight, Ireland will only allow being fully vaccinated to forgo quarantine. Whilst other EU countries won't be as strict. If that's the case its a pretty bleak outlook for younger folk who want to go on holiday and might not fit being fully vaccinated until very late in to the summer.

Figure of speech? Tbf goes without saying. It will be a lot safer once a lot of people are vaccinated come July/August.

Younger folk will just go to Belfast. Perhaps for vaccines as well as flights. The former May well be the case of you follow what is happening in the US with excess vaccines.

14 day solation on return surely screws the vast majority who cannot work from home. That’s my no.1 obstacle and once that goes, the floodgates will open.

It's not really 14 days, it's 5 days plus however long it takes to get the test result, unless you test positive, and that's then only as inconvenient as it would be for an infection acquired in Ireland.

As long as it’s quarantine at home and not mandatory hotel quarantine that’d be fine with me.

Is this for fully vaccinated people also?

Currently, yes. But also currently you can't holiday without risking a 2k fine, so the important thing is what rules will be in place after the 10th, and given that nobody is talking about the 10th in the media yet, we don't know.

I expect vaccinated people will simply ignore the home quarantine rule so it's practically irrelevant.

It might not be irrelevant of our employers insist on the 5 day rule though. Thanks for replying ðŸ‘

The EU has quite clearly stated that the travel cert should not discriminate on the basis of vaccination. Hence, it is a ‘green’ provided you are fully vaccinated, have a recent negative PCR test of have recovered from the virus. The holder of a green cert should be exempt from any travel or quarantine restrictions. Gov have 6 weeks from enactment unless they have a written approval of exception from the EU which they won’t get. It’s a dirty game being played to try and muddy the waters and get people to stay within Ireland.

    Yet, should we be surprised, our little old government seem to think they know better than everyone else;

Construction closed here when it was open throughout the EU
Golf and Tennis closed for longer than anywhere else in the EU
Endless state bodies to review and add layers of complexity on decisions related to testing and vaccinations that were already made for us at an EU level

    Etc etc
