In an otherwise bleak article for what Ireland will be like in the Summer, some really positive news on the travel front.

Meanwhile, a senior minister has also said that the Government will ‘enthusiastically participate’ in the digital green certificate or vaccine passport. The European Parliament has voted to bypass a usual six week assessment period for new legislation. Fianna Fáil MEP Billy Kelleher said this means Irish travellers will be able to use a ‘vaccine passport’ to travel abroad by mid-June.

The legislation for mandatory hotel quarantine also expires in the middle of June. Mr Kelleher said last night: ‘The legislation for Digital Green Certificates will be voted on next week and it is expected to pass. Vaccine passport ready by mid-June. The urgency proposal for the usual committee scrutiny has been passed, so after being assessed by the Commission I would say this will be ready to go pretty quickly. Now I am very supportive of the Digital Green Certificate, or vaccine passport and called for it last year. We can expect about six weeks for individual member states to process the certificate laws.

‘But we could certainly see Irish people availing of a vaccine passport to travel abroad in mid-June.’

I think this is the clearest indication yet that the airport fine will quietly slip into the night when it reaches its sunset clause on June 9th (I think?). Travel is officially back then.

However when you see articles like this:

    https://extra.ie/2021/04/25/news/irish-news/cmo-holohan-puts-dampener-on-gov-summer-plans-at-nphet-return-meeting

Not a chance! Especially when you read this “ However, the Government is unlikely to deviate substantially from the advice it is given by NPHET.”

So how will travel fit in with Tony’s doom and gloom stance about getting back to normal?

Ah look! You, Mickey, are glass empty. Happydays is glass full. Let's settle on a mid point in between.:pac:

Funnily enough i’m quite positive on the whole but when you see what Tony and Co keep coming out with makes the anger level increase. I get the impression he thinks the vaccines won’t get us out of this, his optimism is lacking. My posts are aimed at that shyte. Tony is just not going to let go. Tony will do everything in his power to stop this “vaccine cert” from happening.

Absolutely unbelievable stuff. Hospitality and being "allowed" to meet in gardens are treats we wont be allowed until the "distant future" because there is "no certainty" that vaccines work???!!

Get that clown off the stage. We are basically living in a dictatorship if FF actually listen to this tosh from Tony and refuse to let us have freedoms over the summer months "just in case vaccines dont work"

I am hopping mad, I wish I hadnt read that.

Tony will never let go of the level of power that he has.
I really think its gone to his head - absolute power corrupts absolutely in this case.

The negativity from him is just getting ridiculous at this stage.

I understand that hes supposed to be there for the health of the country but its the tunnel vision that makes him so unlikeable. Hes a one track mind and doesn't see the economic and mental issues that these lock downs are causing people and the country
    .

He kind of needs to be removed from this position.

Yep, indoor dining “ distant future” so i’m wondering how a plane full of people will fit into that view.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 725 ✭✭✭M_Murphy57

How can they say travel will be allowed but also that they wont allow indoor dining, in the same sentence as acknowledging we dont have a "BBQ climate"? Who in their right mind will holiday here, eating outside in the lashing rain, peeing behind trees (because covid loves public toilets so they must be closed too) when the option is there to go abroad to sane countries where its warm, you can eat and pee indoors?

They are going to obliterate our economy, absolutely obliterate it.

That mealy mouthed, spineless, hand wringing clown MM says they wont be "examining" international travel until July...how does that work if the EU are bringing in green passports from June?

That's all about creating a fog of confusion to delay the masses. We'll be flying again in late June more than likely. They can't really stop it if the legislation has expired and there is an open back door through the North.

He’s just trying to stop people booking holidays.
Who does he think is going to pay rip off prices to dine outdoors here?

He’s saying that as it is no longer within their control so there is nothing really to examine. The Green Cert likely enacted in mid June so meaning latest possible quarantine free travel within EU is late July.

It’s all just an effort to screw the aviation industry further and try and prevent people booking. This nonsense of an outdoor summer is a massive own goal as people are only going to be more inclined to book trips abroad in July and August therefore further damaging many Irish businesses already reeling for unbalanced, draconian regulations.

    A comment from MM:

“”Mr Martin said the current advice on international travel will be re-examined in July, when it is expected there will be a significant number of vaccinations administered across Europe.””

He said: "I don't believe we can seal off Ireland forever".

Billy Kelleher said Green Cert will be good to go by mid-June in Ireland. No mention of this six week decision period, except the legislation period which has been dropped.

I just watched M. Martin now, he said IT system already being worked on for the digital certificate and also said their travel dvice could change in July depending on vaccination levels here and abroad. It all sounds positive news imo

Really makes you wonder what's the point of getting vaccinated then. Other than sheer naked virtue signalling running out and vaccinated is just letting carry on this nonsense even more.

Getting vaccinated is All Risk, No Reward for us at this stage. And its not worth it.

Tony's ego has completely taken over. Even last summer when cases were negligible all that came out of him was negativity and misery. I know most public health officials are just doing their job but I can't stand Tony.

    Ronan Glynn is much better.

How is the travel advice COULD change in July positive news? May and June will see huge numbers already vaccinated to allow a change before July. That means they are probably aiming for August.

Ryanair probably cancelling more routes. Coveney saying EU Green Card won't be used in June. Pretty depressing.

    This quote is quite something...

"But I think, certainly, if we then get the reassurance from our public health team that it is safe to allow vaccinated people to travel without having to quarantine then that certainly gives us the tool and the capacity to be able to open up international travel"

Completely disregarding the testing and previously infected parts of the Green Cert, not to mention the fact they have already allowed vaccinated people not to quarantine in MHQ, so why do they need 'reassurance' on it 2 months from now for people going out!? Bonkers.

The lack of a joined up communication system from Fianna Fail and Fine Gael is actually pathetic. Their mixed messaging is an embarrassment. Just look at these two articles from today alone.

The first is from Simon Coveney - Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said that he does not expect Ireland to be using the European Union's "green passport" system in June.

Speaking on RTÉ's This Week, he said the EU is putting together "a really useful tool" which will allow people to have their Covid status in a code on their phone, which can be shown at airports, but added that he does not expect this to be used by June.

"But I think, certainly, if we then get the reassurance from our public health team that it is safe to allow vaccinated people to travel without having to quarantine then that certainly gives us the tool and the capacity to be able to open up international travel.

And the second is from Fianna Fail MEP Billy Kelleher - ‘The legislation for Digital Green Certificates will be voted on next week and it is expected to pass.

This being honest is absolutely fcuking ridiculous.

It's terribly sad. If he had known about the quarantine, he would have either avoided Ireland at all costs or denied ever being in Belgium. The ignorant and vulnerable are clearly the most likely to get quarantined, which just makes this terrible idea even worse!
