This is problem with Ireland. It was the same public attitude with Magdalene laundries, direct provision, church child abuse scandals.

While there no comparisons between the above horrific crimes and MHQ, there is a comparison of attitudes.

You are part of the problem Saab.

Reminds me of the Milgrim Experiment.

Just for anyone wondering about Dublin port. I just got the ferry (stena line) this morning over to Holyhead. There were 2 Gardai and some customs officers in the departure lounge. One Garda at the asked me reason for travel and I told him I am moving to London (which is the case). He took me at my word and let me continue without asking for any further proof which was pretty sound of him. I would imagine depending on your destination they might be inclined to dig a little deeper however.

Has the Irish government done anything to prepare for the rollout of the Doritos green certificate. Mentions in below article that member states should have made logistical preparations in March

Apart from India, has there any indication of which other Countries will be added to MHQ ?

"Chief medical officer Tony Holohan wrote to the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, over the weekend with recommendations for new countries to be added to the mandatory hotel quarantine list, and Mr Donnelly consulted with Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney about this on Sunday.
It is expected India will be added to the list either today or tomorrow."

The opening part of that report is just ridiculous. Not rushing into things while cases remain high! They are not high and the average age of infected is so low it means it is not a threatening virus. It's crazy really they should come out and say if they want to be like nz or australia otherwise treating the public as fools is not going to work

It seems the government’s aim is to go slow until at least half the population are inoculated. I’d say that goes for travel also.

    Varadkar:

"We also see from Israel just how effective vaccines are. There is still a lot of uncertainly ahead and the road will be bumpy but things are going in the right direction. By going slowly until more than half of the population is vaccinated we are taking the best course of action to avoid a major setback."

They should probably add the Azores to the list. I can see them being a real treat out there in the middle of the north Atlantic. The people of Wallis and Futuna could be using them as a back door to Ireland. Or possibly the Falklands?

Except that's the uk so technically you are leaving the state and when they return if mhq still exists then they are legally obliged to enter it.

Spain is not on the MHQ list and I'd have no problem doing the time at home.

I know it is breaking the spirit of the law but it seems to me what I plan to do is legal. In fact those who live within 20 KMs of the border can legally cross it today and are then bound by local laws. It would appear non essential travel from Belfast to Malaga will be allowed in a few weeks.

Is it not the same as having a smoke in a cafe in Amsterdam?

That's good to know thanks. I'll look at ferries from Belfast so once intercounty travel is allowed (if that ever happens)

I'm not being questioned by a gard just to get out of this lunatic asylum for a few weeks.

Has anyone travelled to another county via bus recently? My friend is hoping to come visit me for the long weekend but she is fierce paranoid that Gardaí will question her. What a bizarre worry to have, but this is the age we live in sadly..

If she could get on the road Thursday she may be better off. I travelled all over the country last week and wasn't stopped once. On the weekend I was stopped on the N22 every day as it's a main tourist route. Any buses I've seen were waved through.

Many thousands of people from all over the world fleeing war, starvation, physical attacks etc. who arrive in Ireland and immediately receive food, shelter, free healthcare and money from the Irish tax payer, plus the opportunity to work and further education ........ and you say Direct Provision was a horrific crime?
And you include it along with the Magdalene Laundries and the church sexual abuse scandals?

That is quite absurd, and completely detached from the real world.

Absolutely correct but again, that's not what I'm talking about.

If you fly from, let's say France to belfast and then return home over the border. You are breaking the law by but going to the mqh. Yes, you may well get away with it but the law is still being broken.

It seems for a single person or sole traveller it would be 'easy' enough to get away. Anyone with families still holding out hope for this summer or are you cutting your losses? We're a family of four booked for France 26th June- I'm a cross border worker (Director of a UK co so I'm already travelling 'abroad- to and from NI' every single day). Husband vaccinated. I was going to go via Belfast but no direct flights so considering pushing it out till August. Usually I have a supplier meeting or two at the start of my holiday- this year I won't so I can't really say that plus with two kids in tow.....finding it all so frustrating the amount saying 'anyone who travels now are the ones who won't isolate on return. Such a load of rubbish!'.

It'll be some laugh if the tourists flood in and we're still being fined 2k.

Very strong language coming out of Europe, undoubtedly aimed at Paddy

“Because one thing is clear: All 27 member states will accept, unconditionally, all those who are vaccinated with vaccines that are approved by EMA.”

Fully intend on travelling as a family in late June to France, but have the following as back up plans: delay travel by a week or two (if the trip looks more enjoyable due to end of a specific restriction, for example), go or return via the UK if absolutely necessary (if the fines/ MHQ is still operating here) or delay return by a week or two (e.g. if we are slow to adopt the law around green cert). I will make a late decision on it. I think it's unlikely I would be fully vaccinated by then, but would be happy to test/ quarantine at home as required post trip.

They are definitely getting more bullish about it all. For good reason too, they have realised leaving member states to make up their own rules leads to all kinds of confusion. Plenty of tourist-dependent economies too, who will get us all into trouble if they have debt problems again. No time to mess around!

The problem is keeping out new variants, no apologies for that attitude.

Are they the present day variants that our present day vaccines protect us from or the could be / no proof they ever will be variants.
Sorry but so many excuses for not reopening international travel that I’m getting muddled up here

Let's recap, so far we've had Spanish variant last Sept, UK variant at Christmas and Brazilian one. At the moment there is the known Indian one. Yes there are responsive to the vaccine but it isn't rolled out enough here yet.

How long do you see us trying to "keep out the variants"?? Covid is endemic - it isn't going away and it'll continue to produce variants just like the flu.

Maybe you didn't see my other replies but until the roll out is well underway say 50% of the population I'd guess end of June.

Thanks. I just wanted it clarified. I don't want to break the law. It would be non essential travel. The destination does not have to be Spain but somewhere sunny. There are direct flights from Belfast which is tempting.

Will it's absolutely insane that we would be restricting vaccinated people and by end of June should, in theory have the vulnerable all covered ourselves.

I'm 100% confident that my own end of summer holiday will proceed but I have a backup is need be

Course they are. Jesus wept, who isn't looking forward to normality again? I know I am. Even the simple stuff. I walked the howth cliff last week, was great to get out and I could murder someone for a game of bowling :)

Just to point out Chuck, that that statement does not necessarily mean what I think you think it means.

A country could (I am not saying it will) still impose quarantine, or other public health, restrictions.

At the minute, many European countries are more strict than Ireland in that they will not accept travellers from the US. It is not that they are requiring MHQ for them - they won't let them in.

So, a country could, in theory, accept those travellers from the US etc. but still have MHQ in place. The same as this EU "green cert" will just ensure that EU citizens have to be treated the same as local citizens.

For your own "vaccinated" status, it will depend on when that becomes active. Is it the day you get your first shot or a couple of weeks after getting your second one?

I don't know the answer. Just asking in case anyone knows. I have a family member who received their first shot there a week or two ago and they were told they'd get the second one in July.
