Can someone explain why we’re all running to mandatory quarantine? Test at borders is a good tool. Quarantine if no testing and other procedures at airports are used. But mandatory quarantine didn’t stop Melbourne or the state of Victoria being in lockdown from July to November, their winter. The virus in endemic here - it just doesn’t seem practical for our location (NI & EU) & the nature of our economy.

"Only" 7 is good. Hopefully not just a blip.
And the world has passed the hundred million cases mark.

Seven day average is 2018 cases per day. Last Monday it was 3201 and two weeks ago Monday the 11th it 6370.

Strong chance the schools will reopen in 2 weeks now.

There's a persistently lower death number on Mondays followed by a higher number on Tuesdays.

Test at borders is a good tool if the tests are instantaneously reliable, but they're not, so quarantine makes them more effective.

It's all about the variants. B.1.1.7 seems embedded here and circulating elsewhere and they are running scared of the SA one.

We appear to be getting there. I'm hoping we can break below the 1000 mark per day in early February. As for lifting restrictions, I hope we and I include the Government, don't balls it up. I really want to get my business going again.

Scally on the news dropping truth bombs. Quite diplomatically too.

Lock the country up airtight for 12 months minimum, get to New Zealand level or better with modification.

Should have been implemented 7 months ago but better late than never.

Is that what Scally has stated or what you believe should happen?

The same thing happened in the last two waves. All the negativity spawns these late reactions. In spite of clearly improving case numbers over the last 10-14 days, the narrative has been relentless "things are going to ****e and there's no improvement in sight".

This leads to headless-chicken style panicking and people screaming "Ahhhhh we have to do something!"

So the talking heads pop up and go, "Zero Covid! Quarantine! These are something. We must do them!".

In a week's time when case numbers or firmly in 3 digits and still dropping, it'll all be forgotten about. Again.

Scally has a view that is not far off that. Some elements of the media are pushing it, whether for "balance" or clicks.

4 weeks from now at the earliest for any regular schools to reopen.

People don't generally get tested at the weekend unless they are really sick. Tomorrow's figures will be the real measure.

Well, the word is that the UK is going to announce the plan to close its borders tomorrow and require mandatory hotel quarantine for all, including all from Ireland, whether by air or sea. 10 days mandatory quarantine for everyone from Ireland is certainly not what I expected and puts me in a bind, with my living and work arrangements spread across the two places.

Whether that ‘quarantine border’ is in the Irish Sea, or at the land border remains to be seen, and don’t know how long will be in place for, but seems like all of cabinet now want to throw up a ring of steel (and those who were opposed are now “resigned to it”)

Didn't think Ireland would be included with the CTA. Presume Northern Ireland excluded?

Nolan: "We expect hospital admissions to be still over 1000 and those requiring ICU above 100 until the end of February." In essence, Level 5 remaining in place until March because the HSE doesn't have a contingency plan or scope for expansion in available beds.
Martin has said another four weeks anyway, so nothing new in that.

No, it would be because we'd have over 1000 cases in hospital and over 100 in ICU,

The zero covid approach is really on my mind these days. Say we implement tough restrictions for a couple months, implement strict boarder control measures, whip up the track and test team within an inch of it's life, and we can reopen pubs, have parties, hug our friends, have weekends away, listen to live music, get to the barber/hair salons/spa's, have a meal out, kids in school, and activities & hobbies going again.

    I would do it.

Anyone else daydreaming about this lately?

And then the positivity and relaxing leads to more cases. A vicious circle indeed.

There isn't a chance in hell the schools will be open until after the mid term.

I think it's more that because of the vaccine news, it was felt that one more lockdown would be it. But now it's clear the vaccinations are going to take the guts of the year, and the scale of the recent wave was terrible so people can see another lockdown might be necessary a few months after this one. And nobody wants yet another lockdown.
