"Normal Healthy Teenagers" get and transmit the flu. Teenagers are twice as likely to get the flu than people that are over 65, nearly 3 times more likely for infants.

The Flu vaccine is recommend for everyone, it's safe.

I wasn't saying teenagers dont get and transmit flu if we are being fair here.

I wasnt aware teenagers were more likely to get flu and infants 3 times more likely......as an aside wouldnt that mean they may be more likely to get and transmit COVID too?

I could have put it better as teenagers without underlying conditions that wouldnt be directed by their doctor etc to get the flu vaccine

It's not a jab just for "elderly people"

No but in my admittedly limited experience (I am not a medical professional) they seem to advise/recommend that you get it every winter/flu season once you pass a certain age.......that was the case with my parents and their friends but perhaps thats just my area......I was assuming they were recommending more elderly people get the flu jab as the flu could have more devastating consequences for them....I'd also presume they might recommend it for other at risk categories/cohorts over younger people with no underlying health conditions.

The HSE have been banging on about the importance of the Flu vaccine especially this year since March.

O.K. wasn't aware of that but fair enough

But do you think that means there should be no questions at all about this strategy of rolling out flu vaccine for younger kids up to teenagers.....remember I'm not questioning if its safe or not

my main question would be the motivations behind it.......is it a sign Govt think there will be a big increase in covid due to the opening of schools come what may policy(at least thats how it appears to me) and this is to keep as many ICU beds clear for large increases in covid patients needing intensive care

in other words are they being wilfully reckless opening schools the way they are and is this an indication of that

Umm....since always. So they remain healthy, and in turn the family they could potentially spread it to? Everyone in my family gets the flu shot, every year.

I've never got flu vaccine for anyone in my family ever, is it going to be mandatory?

I always thought it was reserved for those with underlying conditions or over a certain age.

I'm not anti vax or anything but none of us have ever got the flu or the vaccine.

I don't know anyone who gets their whole family vaccinated for flu every year, only people I know who get it are elderly.

Genuinely never heard of flu jab recommended for kids here either up to now. Not once ever, even when we went through very bad winters with our kids did the doctor recommend it to me.

I just checked and it won't be mandatory, just kids will be given the option now to get it for free unlike previous years.

So no schools will demand it? Once they put it out there I think they'll encourage all pupils to get it and teachers may start demanding it.

I don't think they can demand it, I'd certainly hope not. Mandatory vaccination is not something I think a lot of people would support, it over steps a line.

They don't look for it for all the other serious things we vaccinate regularly for so don't think they can for a flu jab.

I’m surprised with an asthmatic child that you have not been recommended to get the flu jab. Our GP insists our asthmatic child gets the flu jab every year - we have to get it at the drs as chemist won’t give due to underlying condition. If he has time I get it as well due to where I work. This year we all will be getting the flu jab.

Sorry now but thats a ridiculous statement. Teachers have no say in health matters relating to pupils - there is no onus on parents who have had a foreign holiday to keep their child at home if they don’t wish to. There are no mandatory temp checks on pupils like other countries do ( not that Im advocating for that) and you think Teaches will be instrumental in whether children get a flu jab or not.

We know you are not anti vax as you have stated previously. You just don’t want your children getting a flu vaccine or a Covid vaccine when available. You don’t want them wearing masks either.

Some good suggestions from our parents include:

For masks in primary - suggest to school that kids wearing masks are kept in pods with others wearing masks. Improves safety in that pod.

Install more bike racks/scooter racks (Coco's are often readily providing these) to encourage staying off public transport.

They be honest I wouldn't like to be dictated to that mask wearers be put together. We've been told this morning that we aren't allowed change pods until Christmas so these kids, all going well, are going to be stuck beside each other for 14 school weeks. A lot of thought will be put into the composition of these pods by us teachers.

No, I make an informed choice when it comes to vaccines. Risks v benefits, the disease itself, chances of getting it, effects if its contracted, known side effects of the vaccine.

My kids have had all of their routine childhood and school programme vaccines, I just won't be quick to give them a brand new rushed through vaccine.

Nor do I think its necessary to vaccinate them for flu when in 25 in years of parenting none of them would have benefitted from just because an inept government now thinks this is a good idea.

That's an informed choice that I make until they are old enough to make it for themselves.

I just picked up a uniform in the school with my grand daughter . Her excitement and enthusiasm was palpable . I wanted to cry for her as I am not confident she will be staying there too long

Grandparents have had an awful amount to deal with, your love for your family is very clear in your posts.

I know my own parents have found it very difficult to not have physical closeness with their family and have decided themselves that enough is enough.

She's lucky to have you, as are her parents.

Big outbreak at a special school in Dundee, Scotland.

17 teachers positive so far. 2 kids, and a few others via the same outbreak.
The school has been shut since Wednesday.

It took less than two weeks

That really makes no sense, changing a pod each week would carry minimal risk and allow for a better experience for all.

Reason given is the 14 day incubation period which I understand.

That reads more like it spread amongst he teachers rather than from pupils. Irish schools are meant to have controls in place to stop the happening across teachers. Wonder was it in staff room or in the pub after work maybe?

Only 2 kids so far backs up the advice that's been given.

I find that very interesting in the context of how the disease spreads. If the kids don't have it and the teachers do, then where are they getting it from?? What's the adherence to ppe, hygiene and sd guidelines like?

I don't get the pods I've two kids in different creche pods, one is moving to big school now a year behind his brother. So by Friday I'll have 3 different kids in 3 different pods. If our house gets it we'll have taken down 3 pods.

It could just be that they tested all teachers first, given that the children are all deemed low risk.

One to keep an eye on

One would assume that given the school has been closed since last Wednesday, everyone has been tested.
