Yes you are correct. However that is not to say that the point can't be argued. The restrictions must be proportionate (Cox v Ireland, 1992). Surely, considering what's at stake for so many publicans, it's worth having a go.

Lives are at stake for rest of the population.

A very clever Coup. A national emergency was declared. The public over their trust to government and NPHET. They enact emergency laws and now suddenly we cant get out of these emergency laws, there is still an apparent emergency.

Sounds like every Coup I have ever seen. Replace NPHET with Military Junta and you get the picture.

I'm in the middle of Dublin, and there's at least 3 pubs with 2-4 staff within a 10 minute walk of me, usually the owner, the barman and a blow in.

Low wage costs, a good start.

My idea for them opening would be this......

Look at how others are doing it, do that! Boom!!

Nah, unless you live in a town with 20 pubs which are each the size of an average sitting room!

Ones which were "viable businesses" before but can't be if groups sit 2 metres away?

    Nah!

well when you cut capacity from 100% down to say 40% then yeah that reduces your viability given a lower turnover.

    Its very simple

If that's the case we may as well close the barbers, the cinemas, the restaurants, the pubs serving food, the hotels, the golf clubs, gaa clubs, soccer clubs, rugby clubs, art galleries, museums etc. Where's the concern for those who are going to die from undiagnosed illnesses due to screening services being unavailable?

So just build an extension and a kitchen and hire more staff...... Thanks I'll pass it on to them.

Step 2: Increase staff costs by at least 100%
    Step 3:???????????
    Step 4: profit

If you open the pubs you might need to close everything down again your correct.

Covid could kill you before any undiagnosed illness. Where is your concern about that?

This is not true, 1am is closing time. Up to each region currently if they want to implement the food pubs like us, but offering snacks counts and you can open.

    Not exactly like us.

Nightclubs and night time bars in Spain are closed as they operate past 1am.

Many articles available online as to what the measures in place are

Has anyone been in a non food bar here where a packet of crisps or nuts would just be laid out on the table. NO NEVER! (Pre Covid).

They are getting their just desserts. Feck them.

Stick a tip jar on every table. Each time you order a pint you throw an extra 2 or 3 euro in the tip jar. If you want that pint in your favourite family run pub bad enough...

Would you really like to be eating crisps/peanuts from open bowls and some people after coming back from the toilet without washing their hands! You could end up with something worse than covid

What has that got to do with your point of bars in Spain operating in the same manner as here ??

Yup been in a fair few bars that send nibbles down to your table and if there's an event on, quiz night, raffle etc send around platters of finger food to your table.

But again nothing to do with your spain point that I was pointing out is incorrect

Grand, but we're not allowed do that right now. If my local want to have a ticketed event/raffle when they reopen, I will gladly buy a ticket.

Peanuts, crisps, pizza, cheeseboards, sandwiches, platters. All been put in front of me in pubs no charge.

Maybe you're just drinking in ****ty bars.

Are you suggesting that these pubs are at 100% capacity at all times? Impossible!

Seems like you just don't like social distancing

Sorry I may have responded to an unconnected post. Is that ok for your policing method.

My point was, that no non food pub that I know of would ever place nibbles out for the punters. So feck them. Well if they do it is VERY rare really. You pay for your peanuts in this country.

I love social distancing, I ****ing hate people.

100% at all times, no, that would be stupid, but do you actually believe a small wet pub can run a friday/saturday night at 40% capacity with reduced hours and increased staff costs and make money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,155 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

Name the pubs where this largesse with platters and so on happens, cos I will be delighted to visit once they are open again.

It's a local thing I reckon. Never happens where I am and would be so good for the barman to just throw a packet of crisps or nuts in with your pint. Rare enough.

The only time I saw this was in a pub in Cork, and it was magic!

Let me know where publicans do this thanks.

We are in the so called Cafe Culture now. Remember Mc Dowell tried it but the Vintners objected.

FK Them now. This is the future.

Because any pub I've been in have extra staff on, either hosting at the door or on the floor while the bar staff pull pints.

I'm suggesting that pubs that can open without the unnecessary albatross of a romayos snack box, and can do so in a safe manner, be allowed do so......

So you've been to bars? Open ones like?

Just because they have had extra staff (not sure how you'd know this unless you taking inventory) doesn't mean the tiny dwarf bars in your town will have to.

But you're talking about reduced capacity. How do snack boxes being in the bar reduce capacity? Do you live in a town with tiny bars and giant snack boxes?

The gov to say you can open without needing to supply food.

Most bars I know have spent thousands on safety measures, stock and sky with the idea that they were opening June 29th,they're never seeing that money again, as well as paying rates and staff. That's not right, if the government are effectively banning you from working, a piss restart grant and a 2% vat cut wouldn't cover leaving the fridges on.

I know I am repeating myself but honestly Irish publicans are tight arsd as fk.

Not a thing to entice us like a plate of crisps and nuts even. FGS that is not a king's ransom, but NO. never.

Just desserts and I have honestly no worries for them at all.

They are pubs that sell alcohol, not a peanut factory,if you crave peanuts and crisps that badly bulk buy them in the supermarkets
