I can't see how it's feasible to open up pubs once autumn and winter come. Summer was the time to try it out and see what happened. Unfortunately, a trial and error approach is needed and we've backed ourselves into a corner with this approach.

The government have themselves to blame for that

yeah thinking this myself, i actually had a dream the other night of it being christmas time without pubs open and the country was back in lockdown. it was very strange , seemed like a nuclear winter or something in East Germany in early 80s, was mad. cant rememeber much of the dream but definitly very clinical feeling and someone says "Aw remember st stephens day, it used to be great." i think i replied "it feels like it should be the end of january not december"

so we basically cancelled christmas, it will be gone same as paddys day, easter and the 3 summer bank holidays.

wow when you think it, thatts some amount of money gone out of the system,Galway races , music concerts , sports games etc.

Yeah millions lost and millions more will be lost before the end of the year

Think eople will say **** it and will treat December in the same way as before. They will go to food pubs and have fun (dancing to Xmas tunes etc). The nights are even shorter and we all have to be out for 11pm

Honestly it's making me sad to think about. Remember covid didn't really take off until the clock went forward. Dreading winter.

i dunno the way this government goes on they seem to have serious power to do as they wish. they could well shut hotels and food pubs/restaurants at the flick of a sswitch. i can see them coming out every month and saying "no not yet for pubs, another 3 weeks, not before october bank holiday, then not before xmas"

If that's the case I suggest publicans should say **** it and open up but as I said earlier once there getting 'financial aid from the government they won't

One of the most popular pubs in town near me is re-opening on Tuesday, in conjunction with one of the restaurants in town (who incidentally are only doing takeaway for the foreseeable future). They have renovated the front of the pub to include a walled-in, outdoor seating area on the street, with heaters and automatic retractable roof to allow for any weather.

Heading in to check out the set-up after work on Tuesday :D

Sounds good. Great to hear places adapting. The more the merrier.

Good to see some pubs have the financial capacity to adapt. I can't imagine most pubs being able to do that on a local level. Some pubs never get over an unfair reputation (might have been trouble years ago which is no longer around or the very odd garda visit) either so even if they did invest, they probably still wouldn't be able to attract more people from the locale

I think there's a lot of locals within communities that people just want rid of and this would be deemed the perfect opportunity I imagine. You're never going to hear these people say open up regardless of how the virus behaves.

Can't see FFFG-HSE allowing regular pubs to open up this side of 2021, it's very convenient to blame them for spreading Covid, so opening them up again won't be a priorty.. apart from the Dail bar.

If you want to walk into a pub for a pint then you'll have to go abroad.

Or to any of the ones that are open serving a substantial meal.

BTW the Dail bar serves food. Now I know that you are a troll.

I was emailing someone else as I wrote this. Joys of two screens. I hope that they didn't get a legal opinion on a substantial meal.

#supportnotsympathy when will they finally reopen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,766 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

last orders at 10pm is crazy and so unusual and leading to more house parties imo

How many cases have been from food pubs the last few weeks ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

They'll allow them to reopen but will enforce the 2 hour rule or even give a 1 hour rule for non food visits. And when will it be lifted? Never

This is their golden ticket folks. This is the golden ticket by the medical people and politicians to finally go after our beloved drinking culture.

Wages talk and family history, all doctors come from the same circle. Nobody in the government has to worry about finances and lockdowns.

Then they can get there herd to the mental health services and prescribe antidepressants which have bad effects on some people

So Covid-19 is all part of a conspiracy orchestrated by the evil Government and health authorities to destroy Irish pub culture? I see it`s so obvious now.

Do you seriously believe all that?

From a personal point of view the public mental health service has been 0 use to me and always ends in medication. I need a autism assessment in which the public system wont here about it and blame my behaviour on alcohol and drugs

No but its hard to see that they are not abusing the situation.

After tonight's videos from Temple Bar, you won't see a "wet" pub open in Ireland in 2020.

Well lads, this is why you won't get a pint this side of Christmas.

    **** Berlin, selfish *****.....

very very little drugs and a moderate rate of drink

Every mental health doctor and nurse etc will always say alcohol is the problem and this and that but for some people its not. Support for non alcohol/drug issues is shocking

It's not in Temple bar it's in Dame lane.
    I honestly dont agree.
The LVA will look at that place and use it as an example that a wet pub should be open if it can put reasonable measures in place. Berlin is taking the absolute piss and deserves to be forced to close.

No chance. That place while an absolute disaster is a little snapshot into the damage that could be done with having pubs open again.

Now while I don't doubt there are house parties that are going on that are every bit as bad, they have no legal standing. Allowing pubs open now would be like sending a message that the government condones this kind of behaviour and MM is far too risk averse to even consider that.
