They are. Pub workers get the PUP same as anyone else who couldn't work.

I’m talking about paying the owners for lost profit. Or a portion at least on condition they stay shut.

The covid ramifications, are a hell of a lot more damaging than this covid crap! you will all change your tune soon enough though!
Parts of the US have left Covid spread unchecked, and businesses themselves have had to step in and desperately do the job the government should have done - social distancing, mandatory masks etc.

You don't have a hospitality economy if people are too scared to go out. Anyone who thinks simply dropping restrictions and reopening everything will save their business is not thinking right. People need to feel safe. The vitners time would have been better spent finding out how to stop the rogue pubs not enforcing regulations, than moaning about government decisions.

It's not an either/or - economy or controlling covid. We need to control covid first, then see what we can rescue of the economy. I can assure you that any government would be delighted to be able to announce that they were re-opening pubs, not having to make a difficult and unpopular (but obvious) decision.

You'd think that not being able to go the pub was reducing people to solitary confinement and waterboarding.

I know it's not nice being cut off from the community, but there are other ways to engage with your friends than being in the pub.

Regarding "nobody has died for days" - can't you see that people will be dying in their dozens again very quickly if we take our foot off the floor too quickly?

The government are basically allowing a huge loophole for pubs to open, you'd wonder why some won't take advantage?

Yeah I was wondering about this, on prime time the mayo vintners representative (i think) who owns a pub said the only thing stopping her from opening was a bowl of chicken wings and how stupid that is..... why not just serve a bowl of something then?

I do hope many more share your sentiment. This is all insane.

Where are all the deaths from the clusters, and protests over the past month.

Can you honestly not see the difference between a meat factory and a pub?

    Coppers?

we may well see the deaths come back - considering there is now 3 times as many people with Covid in hospital as there was this time last week (from a low base) - but indicative of a spread.

We are not seeing deaths in the last week as the containment measures have been working to a degree. But with a rise in reported cases the medial evidence would suggest not opening up society just yet.

However - the facebook epidemiologists and keyboard public health experts will always think they know better

    NPHET can get lost.

    NO MASKS.

    NO RESTRICTIONS.

Get out of our country if you're not happy with it. But to hell with your tyranny. All of NPHET and the so-called government must be jailed for their crimes against the Irish People.

Please identify the actual crime committed so they can be charged

Also - explain what you mean by 'so-called government' .. Its my understanding that the constitution of the state describes how the government is formed by all the elected TDs in the Dail voting on who is in government. Can you elaborate as to where this didn't happen?

You know what’s ludicrous. The 1700 number. Out of those 1700 how many weren’t (a) very old, (b) so sick/old they were in care homes and (c) had serious underlying conditions.

How many do you think were healthy?

(Don’t forget to then subtract the ones the gov lied about AND the ones recorded as Covid deaths that clearly were not)

I think Niall Boylan looked at it and in the entire country 8 people without serious underlying conditions died of Covid.

    Epic rant.

In reality, the elected representatives of the Irish people have made decisions, and right or wrong they are the elected reps and that is their job to make the decisions.
And if you really cant handle that, you can always go somewhere with no masks and no restrictions, somewhere such as.......anywhere?

or, maybe its not enarly as bad as we were told, and those that are likely to die to it have already died (Nursing Homes etc). terrible, but probably true.

Treason is the act of attempting to overthrow the government.

Bad choice for a criminal charge.

Can you honestly not see the difference between a meat factory and a pub?

One is an epicentre for clusters of Covid 19, the other is a pub not allowed to open.

Is this one of these "we have very low cases, let's reopen everything because I can't put 2 & 2 together to understand that we have very low cases because we imposed restrictions" things again?

Now explain this exact crime and all elements of it citing the legislation and actus and mens rea for same. Time to pull on the big boy pants Richard and actually giving well thought out answers.

One is a load of lads, in filthy clothes, in a line with their hands pawing at a fat cow, grabbing the cow from all angles, thinking how tasty she looks, with no real supervision or rules. The other processes meat.

Not really, we have very low cases because we can test rapidly and track contacts, the lockdown helped bring it under some control but it isn't the sole reason for low case numbers, it's more of a:
we were told we'd be dying on the streets, we're not.
we were told anyone who visited a neighbour/friend/relative would die, they didn't.
we were told there'd be huge outbreaks from visiting beaches, there weren't.
we were told there's be clusters from the O’Doherty and Waters supporters outside the courts, there weren't.
we were told there's be huge clusters from the BLM march, there wasn't.
we were told travel would kill us, it didn't (foreign included)
we were told masks don't work, they do or maybe they don't or maybe.

Now I'm not suggesting there's anything to be read out of these but the optics on this are poor, perception is reality when it comes to the 'public' and a lot of good willed misinformation etc is leading to people relaxing (or doubting) where they should be most vigilant.

The virus isn't different outside and inside Ireland. People just have to look at the mess in the US to see what happens when you let it spread largely uncontrolled, and when you throw open bars and nightclubs. Even the reddest, most Trumpiest of politicians is having to introduce restrictions to try and control this - the predictions are that half of all small businesses in the US will have to close in the next few months because their customers are scared to give them custom.

Is there any country (and don't say "Sweden") which has left the virus spread and been happy with the results?

Not suggesting this in any way, just demonstrating why there's a backslash against the restrictions (and it's growing).

I'm all for modified behaviour and treating people like grown-ups, Nanny sez No! approach will only get you so far, sooner or later we have to open and trust people to follow the guidelines (or make them).

There's people on here crying because they can't get a pint after 11pm, as if being asked to make even the smallest sacrifice was too much of an imposition. Some people need to take a long look at themselves, and ask how you ended up so self-centered.

Your constant misrepresentation of peoples position on Covid and related matters is obvious and boring.

Question now is have the government actually updated the licensing laws, could be another grey area again if a premises does have a restaurant licence.
