You need to look at each argument individually, instead of bring unrelated subjects into it. Pubs can't support a reason for opening, so point out other problem area's (that no one seems to agree should be permitted) and cry, "why can't we?" It's bloody childish.

We all agree that foreign tourism should be limited/restricted. So we should open the pubs anyway? eh, no.

i didnt bring it up if you read the alst page, but people dont seem to have an issue with it or believe its not happening, when its rpetty obvious it is.

keeping the pubs closed, and at the same time keeping our airports open just proves the govt havent a clue what theyre doing IMO

TBH I'd blame the 'Sweet Caroline' singers for a lot of this, their antics put a bullseye target on the pubs, sticking the fingers up at our Führers!!!

There is evidence from around the world that opening bars etc can cause spread but they're not giving them the slightest chance to try, they've bent over backwards for building sites and meat factories (proven high risk) and yet the bars stay shut, I wonder if there's a little punishment going on - massively ovber simplistic view but sometimes our govt are pretty basic tbh.

Sorry, instead of "keeping" unrelated subjects in the discussion so.

Airports have to be kept open. There is other traffic apart from tourists.

When "tourists" do stupidly come, they do need to be monitored and proper restrictions be imposed and enforced.

Schools will reopen coz parents are sick and tired of having to rear their own children. They need a break.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,800 ✭✭✭Benimar

Does anyone think pubs will open in 3 weeks though? Same time as the schools??

    No chance.

To be honest, whilst I don't fault the Government for keeping pubs closed, they should have gone to them with a package to stay closed. Basically, pay them to stay shut for a designated period of time - we would be talking months - rather than leaving them dangle every 3 weeks.

What's stopping pubs serving a few oven cooked pizzas and opening with social distancing measures in place or getting together with the local chipper or Chinese to have food dropped down?

The government are basically allowing a huge loophole for pubs to open, you'd wonder why some won't take advantage?

But they don't know in advance how things will be. Because the infection numbers also depend a lot on peoples' behaviour.

Everyone going to a house party, not bothering to wear a mask or not trying to minimize non-essential journeys is contributing to that.

    Yeah that's the reason.

Nothing to do with kids needing to learn to read and write or get an education.

    Jesus.

I don't know I'd of never had kids if I thought I had to rear them :pac:

Can you honestly not see the difference between a meat factory and a pub?

    Yes, why???

Well apart from a pathetic attempt at trolling on your part lol.

I'm just giving examples of industries that face difficulties with this (notice you left out building sites in you quip) that have had a lot of support while the pubs haven't.

so you think food production (or construction for that matter) should be seen on the same level as people going down to have a few pints?

Was told 6 weeks ago that pubs wont open any earlier than the 17th of September ( didn't believe him ) his reason was that they wouldn't reopen before schools, looking at his reason now the 17th will give a 3 week lead in to pubs reopening after schools have reopened end of August . Any spikes in school cases then will keep pubs closed into the New Year even with wet pubs being closed since March, who will Government blame then.

I don't dispute that they are all 'bad' behaviours in the current climate, and all need to be worked on.

However, once pubs didn't reopen on July 20th, with the need to reopen schools, the pubs should have been essentially paid to stay closed.

just wait for the budget and if the schools re open , only to have to shut again! LOL! youll see the screw starting to turn on public opinion....

    How am I trolling?

There are finite resources available to offer supports.
The output from a meat factory is food. Food is required to sustain existence - in very basic economics, it is a "need".

The output from a pub is drink. Drink is discretionary and would fall under the category of a "want"

The food license has been automatically granted so I assume health and safety checks are suspended. Any pub not preparing to sell food are behind the curve since it was obvious from last week they wouldn't be allowed open.

It's a shame the boozers won't open as boozers and not restaurants... I am put off every time I fancy a couple of pints thinking I'm going to have to have chicken wings and fries to have one. This is just encouraging people to put on weight and I rarely eat while having a beer in the local... the off licences must be relishing this.

It's actually even worse than that; every single product that a pub sells is easily purchased from any number of other outlets. One of the primary reasons people go to pubs at all is to socialise; which is precisely the mechanism by which Covid-19 spreads.

I'm glad to see someone is laughing at all this.

Not being able to open schools would be hugely more damaging to the economy than not being able to reopen pubs. We have to try and get schools open - if we have to close them again it will be bad news for the country, and for the children - but we have to give it our best shot. It's not a laughing matter, most people are trying to do their best at an unprecedented time.

There's people on here crying because they can't get a pint after 11pm, as if being asked to make even the smallest sacrifice was too much of an imposition. Some people need to take a long look at themselves, and ask how you ended up so self-centered.

Asking if I can tell the difference, well yes, I'd consider that a pretty troll like question tbh.

    Of course I can tell.

I have no love for the pub - read back a little for having a go, I don't support them opening up but I'm just questioning the government's approach.

BTW there are those who would suggest meat is a 'want not a 'need' not me though.

no I think I need to ask, why we are so out of line with other countries. Nothing other than covid matters any more seemingly, its so blinkered and insane, words fail me... Basically fcuk everything else now, peoples mental health, personal finances, national finances, because what? nobody has died from covid in days?

The covid ramifications, are a hell of a lot more damaging than this covid crap! you will all change your tune soon enough though!

Whether it's grand or not is another debate, personally I would rather not see them coming either until there are proper testing facilities and procedures at airports.

But to say that we are letting plane loads of covid riddled yanks into the country every day is not accurate. There are also tourists from other nations entering the country too, who don't seem to be getting the same vitriol.

sorry who said we are letting plane loads of covid riddled yanks into the country ?
    Bit of a leap there
