We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

It seems, according to Trump's chief of white house staff, Mark Meadows, that his boss has varying degrees of trust in his Admin team members and that includes Chris Wray, director of the FBI after he made a statement about Russia being behind ongoing attempts to damage the Biden campaign, as the statement was contrary to what Trump said: that China was behind the attempts to damage the election campaign. Meadows said on Fox News of Mr Wray “With all due respect to Director Wray, he has a hard time finding emails in his own FBI, let alone figuring out whether there’s any kind of voter fraud,”.

It may be more of Trump's attempts to sow discord and mistrust between his senior Dept heads, along with attempting to scare them into personal loyalty to him or lose their jobs. How this will play out with the AG, Mr Barr, has yet to become clear or if he knew zilch about Trump being upset by Mr Wray's statement about Russian current attacks on Trump's opponents election campaign.

Do you mean Democrats rather than "Liberals". Because if the research you are quoting used "Republican" and "Liberal", then it's not worth the paper it's written on. Also, which American political party is more likely to help poorer people?

I can only offer anecdotal evidence to this question but there is a feeling among conservatives in the US that giving is an act of virtue, a gesture of Christianity - so hospitals, for example, should be kept as charitable services for poor people as it enables the richer people to fulfil their charitable obligations.

That was actually put to me as an explanation why 'socialist' healthcare was not desirable. If they had the same attitude towards paying the taxes that would provide universal healthcare it would come to the same thing - but of course it would remove the warm fuzzy feeling of having helped the poor (in spite of their not deserving it).

With the GoFundMe model of healthcare you get to choose who gets the healthcare rather than the socialist way of just giving it to everyone.

So the NYT have published his tax returns. Turns out the “great businessman” who is “self made” loses money most years and is gradually losing his Daddy’s fortune.

Just tried to get through the morass of stuff to access the NYT but balked at giving them my phone number, so I will just have to wait to read up on the tax return story. I wonder will this slide off him like teflon? Most of his supporters are probably paying more tax than apparently he paid, so it will be interesting.

He paid $750 in federal taxes in both 2016 & 2017, writing the rest off due to losses. Also 'paid taxes using tax credits', however the hell that works

This could be huge for Biden, he needs to run with this big time.

Have huge posters in the battle states of how much tax trump pays and with Biden in office this ridiculous low rate will not be tolerated....

It needs to be more direct and personal. Trump is broke. Trump is a loser. Trump is frittering away his Daddy’s money. Gloves off time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,063 ✭✭✭✭looksee

As many of his companies continue to lose money, Mr. Trump has more than $300 million in loans, for which he is personally responsible, coming due within the next four years. He liquidated hundreds of millions of dollars in stocks in recent years and may have less than $1 million left in his portfolio, according to his public financial disclosures. The pandemic has crippled the hospitality and recreation industry that so much of his portfolio of properties is dependent on.

And hanging over his head is the audit. Should the I.R.S. reverse the huge refund he received 10 years ago, Mr. Trump could be on the hook for more than $100 million. NYT, Charting an Empire: A timeline of Trump's Finances

He is probably in deeper than anyone imagined. Could the IRS move against him while he is president, given Barr's view on the sanctity of the presidency? Are they waiting to see is he re-elected? And there is still three months left of this incredible year.

Trump is a welfare cheat, playing golf on the government's dime and living like a king while evading tax and laundering cash.

    Fantastic reporting by the NYT!

There really is a tweet for everything. It's a pity that his cult of followers won't take any notice.

The New York Times story. I’ve not read all of it but Jesus it’s not a great look.

It seems the IRS audit he keeps mentioning as a reason for not releasing his returns is to do with a claim he made for a tax refund around ten years ago and that's why it's ongoing.

... and they say there's more to come over the next few weeks!

All-in-all, though, it's only filling in (in detail) what we already knew: the guy is a con-man and a cheat, and rearing his children to be just the same. Not sure Ivanka can ever run for office with the suspiciously incestuous payments that have been highlighted, and that coming on the back of her involvement in the Trump charity fraud.

I wish I could say it would make a big difference, should be the icing on the cake moment to end this clown show, but it probably won't. It's still gonna be a stupidly close election in all likelihood. Just hope enough of the voters who can be persuaded and are lucky enough to be able to vote break for Biden.

What's worrying is that Biden paid 5 million in taxes. How much is this guy worth?

    How wealthy is Biden?

This could be twisted that trump is a smarter operator paying less tax. I’d say he will point to it as being evidence of his genius. While sleepy joe hands over millions.

If I was Joe I would just say he increasing the national debt by not paying his share, he already sent it sky rocketing during his 4 years. Or say it is money out of veterans pockets or similar, it is what Republicans would do.

I know you're only messing but you can be sure there's some simpleton out there double-thinking his way to the above logic. Like Jordan Peterson says, life is tough with an IQ under 80.

Giving to charity for conservatives is not a virtue, it's something that is tax deductible.

I guess the main objection to public healthcare republicans have, is the fact that people won't have to beg for it, cap in hand.
And they don't get to deny healthcare to people they don't like.
Charity is to make yourself feel bigger and more important than the recipient, it establishes dominance.
If suddenly poor people were entitled to healthcare, the rich would be robbed of their "sit up and beg" routine where they throw crumbs to the adoring masses.
It would make poor people more equal and they feel sick at the thought.

Pretty wealthy by now one would imagine, he and his wife paid a combined 5 million, 1/3 of their total income so that would put the joint earnings that year at 15 million.
