    What happens next summer?

The chances of a vaccine are slim to zero.

Is travel to be restricted until a vaccine is found, whenever that may be, if ever?

If we do 'open up' in 2021, what is the difference between then and now - other than the hundreds of businesses and tens of thousands of jobs that will be lost in the interim? The virus will still be out there, the risk of it coming into Ireland will be exactly the same as it is now.

Will Dr Tony be on RTE in 2021, telling everyone they can't go on holidays and every tourist and business traveler need to quarantine for 2 weeks?

Has anyone asked him theses questions? What is the endgame? What will the country look like when the money's run out and nobody will lend to us because we are an economic basket case?

Where are the alternative points of view in the State media? Where are the politicians questioning this 'strategy? Is everyone too afraid of being labeled a granny-killer on social media to risk sticking their necks out?

This is a dangerous time for our country and our way of life, not just for our generation but for our children. When the damage becomes apparent it will already be too late.

    Wake up people.

Wht a hysterical post. What are your restrictions as of today?

    This reminds me.

Wheres Simon Harris? he disappeared off the scene pretty quickly? Does he still tweet about "we are not there yet"?

You are both aware I assume, given how on top of current affairs you are, that Simon Harris is no longer the Minister for Health?

We are not only aware, we are delighted he is not minister for health anymore. I believe he studied journalism in university before he dropped out, hopefully hes picking that up now.

Back in the day when? It's been around in some form or another for 40,000 years or more. You're applying the sophistication of this tiny age of 20th-21st century medicine to all of recorded human history, for most of which we really didn't live very long.

    Absolutely, I agree 100%.

I thought about getting into that with my response, but it was three in the morning and I felt it was probably a waste of time.

I'd call that spreading through a population pretty rapidly. My own great-grandfather died of it - a young healthy man in his 30s. But no lockdown.

You want us to go back to 1882? The jet setting everything on tap anti lockdown mob wont like that!

    Welcome back to the thread!

You coming back to restrictions thread when 95% of restrictions are lifted is a bit like govt advising to wear masks when there's like 200 people infected with covid in the country. But happy to see you here nonetheless :)

Yes and I’m delighted by that- but he’s only gone a few days. It’s was the past month which I referred to in my post. He was still Health Minister

Its actually somewhat fitting in a way

Simon Harris becomes minister for higher education in the same year leaving cert goes to predicted grading. :pac:

I know, Fintan is a legend. He is fundamental to this thread.

Anyways, not looking great is it?

Small businesses are dying and need €15bn bailout, Covid committee hears
Firms would not take up support as loans at 5-6% interest, lobby group chair asserts

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the country are dying and need a €15 billion bailout, the chairman of SME Recovery Ireland has argued.

John Moran told the Oireachtas Covid-19 committee yesterday the sector required an immediate cash injection of €6 billion to survive the impact of the pandemic. He said existing support schemes must be restructured to provide grant aid and not debt. He said firms were afraid to take on further borrowings. He said firms would not take up support if it came in the shape of loans at 5 or 6 per cent (interest) and lengthy application forms.

Govt had over 3 months to sort this out, yet here we are in July, with thousands of businesses on the brink, still required to go through a lengthy application process to get a 6% loan from the government..... Remember Leo smirking when faced with the "typo" question in May? Back then I knew he had no clue about business or how business operates.

He has done two high profile press conferences with Leo, Tony Holohan and Heather Humphries in the last 3 weeks, the second one being 6 days ago.

Just back from my gym which opened back up today.

Queue outside to enter the building - and then once inside and used the changing rooms, there is another slower-moving queue to actually get onto the gym floor, one in one out on the gym floor.

This meant that then gym floor was pretty empty but queue of about 50 people in the hallway standing nearer to each other than they would be up in the actual gym itself.

normal things in life going to remain a nightmare for the foreseeable.

Jesus. That sounds awful. I'm not a member of a gym - a spin bike at home, and a TRX for the park sorts me out - but I would not put up with that. A booking system with one hour slots would be far preferable (I know that an hour is not enough for some lifters, but is better than this one in one out malarkey)

I'm asking again - where was the lockdown?
Surely you'd agree it was necessary since we were dealing with a new unknown virus? 2m social distancing would work wonders if there's suspicion it's sexually transmitted!

I know it was totally unintentional by you, but this post on HIV gave me probably the best laugh I have ever had on this forum. :D

    Absolute comedy gold.

See the weather today in Dublin?

Staycations? Oh Tony, he ll never stop entertaining with wishful thinking is he? I remember back few weeks ago he said in a press conference he was hoping for some bad weather to encourage people not to gather in groups outdoors.

Now he probably wishes Ireland was sunny and staycations was a thing. Except for Ireland is rarely sunny. Weather turned to shi*e ever since staycations started to get mentioned.

This is a thing that really concerns me. If the restrictions start to make enjoyable activities unenjoyable, people will find alternatives. Which leaves people unemployed.

The Priory restaurant in Kildare announced today that it was NOT reopening.

Businesses are been forced to run at reduced capacity. But the costs are sadly not much cheaper for the business.

got a spin bike myself too and you can book for classes (which they seem to have made a mess of) but I haven't done any weights training since march so need to do that.

the one in one out system makes it difficult as you don't know how long you are going to have to commit to a gym trip, was planning to just go on work lunch break but don't think that will be an option.

You talk a lot about how much lockdown will cost the business community, and then here you are slagging off the hospitality industry in Ireland. Is it Irish or Spanish businesses you are worried for?

food was good and a great portion.

closed permanently? or not re opening until demand picks up?

Speaking of the Priory restaurant closing in Kildare, is it just me that is starting to notice similar announcements from cafes, pubs and restaurants? I've seen a couple now on social media over the last week.

Very sad and very concerning. How many livelihoods will be destroyed by this? And most won't even get a mention in the media.

While HIV can’t be compared to C19 it is something I’ve been thinking about from a public awareness perspective.

When HIV/AIDS exploded in the 80’s, the scare mongering and outrageous fake news was widespread.

I asked a doctor friend why the message of fear is still as strong nowadays even though HIV is very difficult for catch depending on the sexual act.

He said, “because the messaging works”

Given we won’t have a vaccine till who knows when it’s fair to consider the approach to public awareness in the coming months and years. At what point will it tone down? Perhaps never? (Given how it spreads) Is it possible people vaccinated can spread it from poor hygiene etc even though they won’t catch it?

Wasn't fully clear. They said it wouldn't be viable to reopen the restaurant due to the restrictions. So it will remain closed. But the bar will reopen when the restrictions allow it to.

Don't know whether they'll try to reopen the restaurant at some point in the future.
