Wasn't fully clear. They said it wouldn't be viable to reopen the restaurant due to the restrictions. So it will remain closed. But the bar will reopen when the restrictions allow it to.

Don't know whether they'll try to reopen the restaurant at some point in the future.

could be similar case to construction sector. 40,000 + still get 350 euros, 6 weeks after allowed to go back to work.

All of this will run out end of Aug, and a lot of people will face the reality of having to collect 203 euros per week.

got a spin bike myself too and you can book for classes (which they seem to have made a mess of) but I haven't done any weights training since march so need to do that.

the one in one out system makes it difficult as you don't know how long you are going to have to commit to a gym trip, was planning to just go on work lunch break but don't think that will be an option.

I imagine lots of people will cancel their memberships, which will lead to a lot of gyms closing down.

Its very common for people to plan going to the gym before work, on break etc. No point getting up early to stand in a queue

If the Covid payments don't get extended, I imagine we'll have a LOT of angry people come 1st September.

I'd love to get some more details on why those 40000+ are still out of work.

203 a week is going to be the new normal for a lot of these people. Think they can kiss the xmas bonus goodbye this year as well. Although that will cause chaos.

If they get extended they ll need to go to Xmas though? What government is gonna extend it to October or November and cut it 4 - 8 weeks before xmas?

Sinn Fein politics on benefits, Gerry Killeen advice on foreign travel, we might just be on the receiving end of all of this.

And those enough lucky enough to still have jobs will face the reality of having to pay for it, along with all the pensions, health services, education and infrastructure spending that's needed to keep a country running. Not to mention the €2billion a year for PPE

We're still paying back €200-odd billion from the previous recession but sure fcuk it, can't we just borrow our way out of this one too?

Sorry kids, ye're going to be saddled with out debt for most of your lives - you can send your regards to Leo and Tony.

After becoming more aware of Ireland's current guidelines re travel, I cannot understand how Tony Holohan had the gall to come out over the weekend and harass + terrify the Irish public re going on their holidays.

    - Anyone from anywhere can currently enter Ireland. Our current 'quarantine' amounts to a form filling exercise and a friendly little phonecall, according to a TD on the radio this morning, it is not law and just recommendations...So anyone from the US, Iraq, you name it if they can get a flights, they can currently enter here and just fill out a form. Meanwhile in the Schengen zone, they've a travel ban on some countries e.g. USA and others and are managing the risk much better.

    - At the same time, Irish people and families are being terrorised about going abroad and told to just 'lose' thousands of Euro because you know Covid exists, so tough....these people would be travelling to SAFE zones, how does that make any sense...

    - Many EU citizens are this week travelling to go on holidays in other EU countries, their governments have given them clear and concise recommendations and advice. Planes are taking off from airports following necessary precautions and life is moving on. Meanwhile in Ireland, our CMO goes rogue as soon as he sees the power vacuum, and boy is it a big one as we've yet to see this Government wake up and provide clarity on the situation. What an embarrassment to ourselves and the EU...once again.

    - The CMO claimed he was 'beyond worried' re travel, basing this on 6 cases from Iraq that did not even enter Ireland from an EU country, or even through a ROI airport. He was slow to explain to us why he was 'beyond worried', and when the information became clear, the articles re 'Tony said cancel your holiday' from him and his cronies became an onslaught.

    - Where are the plans for the reopening of our airports? Why did Simon Harris tweet this morning, listen to the CMO? We have rights as EU citizens and he or Tony do not have the right to take that from us without clear evidence it is the right thing to do.
Did the Department of Health do nothing to help facilitate testing, contact tracing and other screening measures at airports and ports?
We cannot exist here in a Green utopia, if we do we'll have to live on fresh air...which I understand wouldn't be much good at paying the bills, providing food, homes, employment, etc.

Yeah I imagine they'd have to extend until the end of the year if they are going to extend it. You couldn't take it away a few weeks before Christmas.

For all the giving out about this thread, the main Covid thread is an absolute cluster**** of loons today. Was there a full moon or anything last night?
I honestly find it hard to believe some of them are real people and not just trolling especially the lad spending his days spying on businesses and demanding links to try pick holes on any sort of positive news.

I have spent the past 2 days banging my head against a brick wall in that thread, it is full of stubborn hysterics who keep sidetracking and deflecting and not engaging. I hope they don't follow this post into this thread, apologies in advance to this thread if we get any psycho anti-relaxers.

How many livelihoods will be destroyed by this?
Unless you have a vaccine you are hiding in your back pocket, this isn't a very useful complaint you have.

We're not going to do a Texas and simply let the virus rip through the population. We're trying to find a way to control the spread, and allow businesses to function - but it's not an either/or.

Well said my friend, well said. Spain announced on 3rd week of May that they were reopening 1st July, then was the time to attempt some scaremongering. Dr. Tony is constantly worried about something.

If Tony Holohan saying he was worried about international travel and advising people not to travel unless absolutely necessary is "harassment" and you're feeling "terrified" I wonder how it is you manage to function on a daily basis.

Yeah I'd have to agree with that despite being more on the cautious side. The other thread is completely daft in the opposite direction.

I saw that you got accused of being a member of the dark side yesterday :).

They went 1 step further actually, announced that 1 July deadline will be brought forward by 10 days to 21 June. Pesky Spanish, savvy business people in Spanish politics. We need to send Tony H over there to sort them out with his causes for concern.

Case of C19 went up 9% since Spain opened their borders. All clusters under control.

    Bloody tourists?

    No.

Spanish government has pinpointed family gatherings and local towns holding fiestas. This is all available to see in the Spanish news.

I’m sure though the Irish government will highlight this as a result of borders opening in the upcoming press events when announcing clarity on travel.

Talk of the Spanish Government here, if you think our dealing with Covid was bad, find a Spanish person and discuss their handling of care homes, death hiding and government refusal to report deaths and instead leaving it to the regions.
Lots of areas have seen spikes since re-opening and there is major confusion over how they decide to classify a case or a death, only testing in hospitals for most of the first stages of outbreaks.

They have on the spot fines for not wearing a mask in certain situations (same people on here saying how great they are are crying about forcing them to wearing a mask), they locked people in their apartments and leaving got you a fine, made our lockdown look like a party.

Spain had to open as their economy is largely based (on the coasts) over a 4 month period. Without tourist income in those areas they are in huge trouble. I wouldn't be singing their praises at all (or our own governments).

I'm not sure why anyone would expect the CMO to encourage travel, his role is on health, he sees new cases from abroad, knows we have very little checking at airports and so calls it out as something that worries him.
If you want pro-travel information follow Ryanair, if you want medical opinion the CMO and if you want an informed decsion weigh up both and then decide what you will do.

Everyone should make their own decision whether to travel in the knowledge that the virus is still active

Hes now in charge of Higher Education :D I can see his new slogan
"Stay at college so you dont become a stupid bastard like me"

Or more accurately in charge of further education for our future emigrants.

I can totally see the argument that Spain had incentives to open borders, but looking around the other 25 EU countries currently allowing travel within the union, the opinion I most respect is Germany. No massive inbound tourism sector, plus a leader in Merkel who's seen it all and is vastly experienced in weighing up competing interests and making tricky decisions. No way they are just allowing their citizens around the continent for the heck of it.

It could definitely be considered harassment, he's trying to publicly shame people into not going on the holidays they may have already forked out 1000s for? If everyone was entitled to a refund then fine, but in most cases they are not.

I have flights that cost 500 euro for October to the Canaries that i'm going to have to walk from without a refund as I fear now anyone going abroad will be treated with contempt and it wouldn't be worth the grief.

I agree and disagree with people all the time, I'm not on any side. Someone posted there about young people being irresponsible and I disagree with it. Do every day. My side of the argument is to get on with reopening, with precautions, and for people to be patient. I'll be glad to be able to go to the pub or go shopping places I couldn't just a few weeks ago. I certainly won't be getting on a plane (as good a job as the airlines have done with precautions) any time soon.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/business/transport-and-tourism/government-committed-to-finalising-roadmap-for-safe-overseas-travel-shortly-1.4293413

    Some quotes stand out as being comically at odds with getting on with overseas travel;
It emerged last night that not every passenger arriving into the country is receiving a follow-up call to check that they are self-isolating for 14 days following their arrival into the State.

The Department of Justice said that since early last week it has only been in a position to make 60 to 70 per cent of the follow-up calls to passengers arriving into the State to check up on their 14-day quarantine because of the increase in passenger numbers arriving into the State.

The department said Covid-19 Passenger Locator Forms, which passengers are required to fill out, are randomly selected and a “large cohort” from every flight but not every passenger is called.

Figures released last week show that of the follow-up calls made between May 28th and June 21st more than a third of calls to passengers contacted in follow-up calls went unanswered.

The department said that as the passenger numbers increase significantly over the coming days, the task of making the follow-up calls will fall to the HSE as the department’s border management unit “will need to focus exclusively on their core function of immigrating passengers.”

So assuming you are one of the "large cohort" who fill out a form, you may not even be checked but the worst that will happen anyway is you get a phone call. A third aren't even answering the phone call, but even this won't happen shortly as capacity to do this will disappear. The inference from this is that people have been arriving into the country, not following the guidance but it hasn't been an issue as reflected in our numbers. Not sure why then we are delaying publishing updated travel guidance, people want to get back out there now it's into July.

Pot bellied pig, a cafe in rathmines, has announced its permanent closure today. Not viable to reopen with the restrictions.

Add that to the priory in Kildare closing their restaurant, also saying it’s not viable with the restrictions.

These announcements now seem to be happening each day.

Add Debenhams, Zara, Mothercare, Monsoon, Bewleys in there. Add the 500 lost jobs in Aer Lingus and the lost jobs in Ryanair. Not to mention all the other jobs in the tourism sector.

Include the 40000 construction workers still getting the Covid payment.

Add all the people on these very threads who work in various sectors and have reported a variety of issues such as job losses, reduced salary, reduced hours.

The economy will bounce right back though? Right? ... Right???

God only knows what we’ll be left with by the time the vaccine comes or we decide that we have to carry on with our lives.
