The people have led the government throughout this and will continue to do so. Children everywhere are mixing as normal now. September is over two months away, social distancing may not even be a thing then. It's beginning to look like some people will have to be weaned off the fear that's been hammered into them.

I heard JC might not be run next year, that was a while ago. Any updates on that anywhere?

A total rubbish rumour. Another example of the hysteria that's out there.

I work in education and I can tell you that there is a determination to get things back as normal as possible as soon as possible.

All so far are operating a blended model to varying degrees. I know of no country where classes are operating like they were in February.

We are talking about September, not right now. Although the fact that some countries have schools open now when we still don't shows that they are at least trying to get back to normality.

Who are they expecting to mind the kids when they're at home 3 or 4 days during the week?

No i’m not looking for problems, do you have anything else to post instead of this nonsense? Be my guest if you want people crowding around you in a corner who don’t have the manners to wait until you move off.

Meantime the kids are all playing together in the playground and mixing on the greens .

Yes, mixing on the greens, but a lot are social distancing , again as they are not mature enough , it probably not 2m , but they are trying.
Always stories of gangs of teenagers doing the wrong thing, but a lot are doing their best like most .

Younger kids under 12/ 13 , can't be expected to distance without adult supervision and constant remi ding.
Schools talking about staggered breaks , with a lot of supervision , more teachers on yard .
Some teachers will be getting a lot of enhanced pay for yard duty

Well they are , By September who knows how the whole sorry saga will pan out so I don’t think we need get our knickers in a twist just yet . Look how long 2 and half months are in the life of a virus April - June

All this stuff with the schools only being open 1/2 days a week is all going to lead to the 2m coming down to 1m, because they know that this isn't a workable solution.

In all honesty, I have never seen children playing outside and social distancing. Unless they are being restricted by their parents, they are going at it as usual. And so they should!

So you did. What county is it that's had nearly no cases in two months?

    Leitrim. 83 cases.

this is in a county where there were hardly any cases the last 3 months.

Not all rumors are hysterical y’know.

I think we now have about 16 counties with no new cases. Sligo has been covid-19 free for about 26 days iirc.

Exactly . So will they pay the parents who find they can’t go to work and look after young children ? Will parents be trained to educate their children ?

I said teens , if you read the post!
I also said children need supervision, again read the post.
    So we do not disagree..

So teachers and staff can’t be worried about their own health? Can’t be concerned about interacting with elderly relations?

Just suck it up because they have ‘great time off’ or some BS like that?

Yes the schools have to plan but with any luck it'll be 1m by September. I don't see it being " back to normal" though.

They can but just don’t expect to be paid for it. No one else gets paid if not working

Given it’s a ‘minimum of 1m’ there’s also an argument for 1.5m in line with Germany, Australia etc.

There were only 8 new cases yesterday.
Id like to think we'll be managing just fine come September.

The paranoia from the teachers is incredible.
No reason schools can't go back to almost normal on September. What'll be the point of social distancing if the virus simply isn't here?

A lot of what's reported in the Indo is exactly that. Hysterical, sensational and exaggerated.

Principals have been far too busy dealing with the exceptional circumstances of LC calculated grades to be thinking about next years' JC. But the overwhelming desire in education is for normality to resume as best it can.

Might be a pipe dream somewhere to get rid of the JC altogether and such pipe dreams are often flagged in rags like the Indo. But such matters are for other threads in other fora.

    But they were working .

    Google classroom ......
Groups deciding grades on Leaving Certs ..
Planning for socially distanced and blended learning ..
Emailing parents to get their kids to log on to said Google classroom..
Emailing parents to let them know their little darlings hadn't completed their work on Google classroom..."/
Now on holidays not not working ; )

Leaving Cert was a major stress for all concerned , to be fair , and not done with yet .

If you think that, in large groups like schools or shops , indoors, there will be no restrictions on distancing , into the future , you are dreaming .
A lot of teachers as well as other workers are vulnerable and entitled to protection. If not from the kids who have not been proven to be spreaders, from the other staff .
    So not paranoia ..

Im a teacher I think we should be going back to school now trialling measured etc etc as come September it’s going to chaotic especially with new infants nobody will know what’s going on plus all the kids normally get sick round end of September into October

Absolutely. Start trialing this as soon as we can, a "big bang" will be a nightmare. We should be taking this approach nearly everywhere.

I’m sure the desire is there and rightly so. Unfortunately, or fortunately hopefully, the reality of of covid and it’s effects on social distancing will play a part on the delivery of education.

Fingers crossed it all gets back to normal. My daughter is doing her LC next year so we do have an interest in how this is going to pan out. It makes sense that the jc exams would be put on back burner if covid is still prevalent, and lc would have precedence. No hysteria here, just conversation.

I was listening to Liveline in the call just there. Usual collection of cranks sounding off about how 'disgusting' it was that people weren't wearing facemasks while shopping in Penneys.
I am all in favour of the shops opening, but my heart went out to one woman stuck at home with an increasingly frustrated adult daughter with special needs, and who said she gets zero support other than 'there might be something in September' and crap in the post with lists of suggestions to help her cope. As she said, it is disgraceful that the cash register comes first while people desperately in need of help are told to go whistle.
Seems to sum up the Irish lockdown perfectly.
