Figures for the month of July from a 4Kw system on an even East : West split. Based in South Dublin. No battery. 5kW inverter:

    • Total generated: 415 kWH
    • Highest day:  8th  20.66 kWH
    • Lowest day: 23rd 5.28 kWH

As anyone living in Ireland will know, July was an absolute shocker weather-wise so on the one hand I’m kinda surprised we achieved as much as we did. We were 94 kWH down though on what we achieved in both May and June. Still, we were better than April which got us 340kWH !

Will have the full year’s data from my App around 7th August.

758 kWh generated on my 6.1kW south facing system

Used 61% of it which is alright for me

Total Energy consumed in the month was 1,325 kWh

A little over what was estimated on the PVGIS-SARAH estimate

6.1kWp south facing, South of Cork City

7.2kwp south facing in north Dublin. 694kWh generated and best day was 8th July generating 34.3 kWh.

63 of the imported kWh was used during free time on Saturday with Bord Gais where I use it to charge the batteries.

Is your battery import total not included in your generation total. eg your actual generation is 694 - 63 = 631kwh . Thats how mine works in the solis reports anyway. Its a right pain trying to work out real generation in the winter with all the battery charging.

Considering what felt like a miserable month we faired ok.

    South Roscommon, 8.16Kwp, facing 210° at 35°, 9.6kWh battery

Total generation 852.84kWh (prediction at 820kWh, last year 902.1kWh)

    Consumed 712.57kWh (84% self use).

    Energy from Grid 0kWh

    Energy to Grid 134kWh

    To the Eddi 131.8kWh

To the Zappi 274.8Wh (all from solar)

    To the Battery 140.86kWh

    From the Battery 131.25kWh

    Best day 8th with 41.9kWh

    Worst day 18th with 8.4kWh

Energy exported would have generated €24.12 at Energia FIT rate if on a smart meter, we are D/N.

2.1kwp system (south facingsystem, North Dublin), only live since 7 July

    July figure was 103 kWh.

Grid charging the batteries has been doing a lot of the heavy lifting for peak shaving last month. Hoping for a better weather and solar PV in August.

Yes to charging an EV. But most of the import is due the inverter and battery reacting slowly to power demand.

6.5Kwp split 2.3Kwp East & 4.2Kwp West. South Dublin city.

12 months ago I had 3 less panels than this year (I had 5.3Kwp last year), so the fact that I didn't match last years generation with 3 extra panels is a testament to how good Aug'22 was.....or how poor Aug'23 was, or a bit of both :-)

    Hi All,

New install near the end of June this year

    My Setup:

7.74kW (18x 430w panels) 9 panels South / 9 panels West in North Waterford, slope I think is around 40°, 5kW Huawei Inverter with No Battery currently (hoping to add one down the line)

July was poor for me (compared to predictions), not just because of the bad weather but also had a few teething issues...no generation on 1 string for about 4 days due to loose connections and some intermittent issues with the inverter dropping down to about 100w even then weather was great, but think we have all those sorted so August was pretty much where I expected it would be

    July

    Predictions 841/811 kWh

    Best Day 9th July - 41.75 kWh

    Worst Day 26th July - 9.08 kWh

    August

Figures are in for the month of August from a 4Kw system on an even East : West split. Based in South Dublin. No battery. 5kW inverter:

    - Total generated: 371 kWh

    - Highest day: 20th  18.97 kWh

    - Lowest day: 18th 2.01kWh

So, 44kWh down on the month of July. The slow inexorable slide to the winter continues. I have written up my experience since going solar and have a year’s worth of data now.

We started the journey in April 2022. Paid the 25% deposit on the install. Panels were fitted in June '22. Inverter installation, connection and final commissioning was done in July so we have been live and generating since then. We paid €5,100 nett after the €2,400 grant. The system is 4 kWH on an even East : West split. A 5 kW hybrid inverter with no battery, Eddi or Zappi !

There were some teething probs with the app which had to be reinstalled, so my data only started from 8 August 2022. Annual generation from 8 August 2022 to 7 August 2023 was 3,288kWh. The installer’s proposal predicted an annual yield of between 3,600 – 3,900 kWH but we are a little shy of that. Salespeople …eh !

    Electricity Usage

The financials have been difficult to calculate given the major spike in energy costs and inclusion of the various government €200 support payments. We also changed provider, to SSE in August and had a Smart Meter installed in September. It is now active but we have remained on a 24 hour tariff. SSE also reduced bills with a once-off payment of €35 last May.

To try and get a useful benchmark on usage I compared meter readings from previous old bills in the two years between 1 October 2019 and 01 October 2021. I also registered and looked at data on the esbnetworks.ie site. According to all of that that I calculated an average usage rate of 5,089 kWH per annum. That’s on the high side I know and we have no electric cars or hybrids.

In the 12 months since the installation we used 3,318 kWH of electricity. That’s 1,771 kWH less than my pre-panel usage. That works out as an annual saving of €566 on electricity costs currently at €0.32 per unit.  So, I estimate that allowing for monthly fluctuations circa 35% of the electricity we use over a full year is generated from our roof 😊

    Clean Export Guarantee

We get €0.24c back from SSE as a credit on our bill under the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG). In June we received €157.86 back from SSE for 657 units exported to the grid for the 7 month period 1 October 2022 to 30 April 2023. SSE gave a very detailed breakdown of how this was calculated.

We also got two CEG payments of around €9.29 each on our December and January bills. There was no back-up from SSE for how these were calculated but they are equivalent to around 38 kWHs each. There may have been some delay getting the NC1 Form registered with ESB Networks hence the figures being a little vaguer. Also, we were probably on deemed export for two months as we only had the Smart Meter installed in September.

So, the total received under the CEG from, September to end April 2023 was €176.44 for 733 kWHs. With peak generation in May – August our Smart Meter indicates a total export figure today of just over 1,600kWH. So, that’s 867 kWHs at €0.24 = €208.08 we still have to be paid for

That equals €384.52 in CEG over 12 months for circa 1560 kWHs sent back to the grid which is around half of what I generate. I know this potentially creates an income tax liability as it is greater than €200.

    General Observations

    - It seems that half of the electricity we generated, we consumed. The other half we exported. That was a surprise.

    - The calculations I have done here are not forensic. I have not factored in things like depreciation. But, they indicate a ballpark reduction in our annual electricity bill of €566. Taken with the annual CEG of €384 the total financial gain is therefore in the region of €950 over 12 months 😊

    - Based on these figures I estimate a payback of just over 5 years. We are happy with that and beyond that we will continue to make savings

    - We now have a BER of B2 in a house built in 1948 😊 😊

    - The best day ever generated 25.56 kWH. That was during the fab June weather. So that seems to be the maximum capacity of the system

    - The worst day was in December when it generated 0.76kWH. Low sun, short days, slim pickings

    - Three good days in Summer will give you more than the month of December. November to February are predictably grim months for solar. And obviously that is when you are using the most energy.

    - Amazing to think you will still send energy back to the grid in November, December and January. Not huge amounts but you still send energy back then and every little bit helps when you have the CEG.

We’ve changed some of our habits. We time dishwashers, washers, dryers etc. to come on in the middle of the day now. We are 100% happy we did this. It is the right thing to do for lots of reasons if you can afford it. In hindsight, we might have put more panels up on the roof, but we only had a certain budget. The system is future-proofed to allow us add more panels so we may do so in time.

Sin a bhfuil. Hope you enjoyed reading this and that our experience helps in making a decision.
