Some insomniac tests this morning, comparing LTE and Landline. Speed right back up, but hard to know what to make of the near enough 1 second latency on the ping, compared to landline 40ms. If this was voice over LTE it would be very distracting, with 1.5 second gaps in responses, but perhaps that is unlikely to happen to dedicated voice traffic. Whatsapp calls maybe. Speed is not the problem at this hour of the morning, but torturous data paths will kill speed during daytime traffic.

Mine has been like a rocket today, flying speeds. I've been hammering speedtest and no let up. Maybe it's suddenly fixed.....

Mine has got a new burst of life, thrown over 50 speedtest at it, driven 30 mins across rural country and even got 110 down.

Ditto, just down in the village at Lidl

Haven't seen that before, 4G+. Have to stop calling it the village. 16,000 people live here.

Was getting nothing yesterday. Back to 15Mbps today. So unreliable.

I'm pushing speed tests and will report back. Fingers crossed they've fixed their routing issues

    Best so far

I'm stull getting around 15. Probably mast related.

I went between a good number of masts yesterday and today and no issue. Try restarting the phone?

Done that. Now down to 5.

Moved around outside, got to 30.

Has your response time improved? I noticed yesterday that the speed test kicked in straight away, giving the usual ping time of 60-90ms and then it would start. Before that, it would circle around for a few seconds before starting into the sub 1Mb speed

A bit yes. I thought I used to imagine that lag. Obviously not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,772 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Day 3 of "back to normal" and I've thrown about 15Gb through speed tests in various locations and times of day and it's holding strong. Speeds went down to 10 at peak but getting faster than before most of time, hitting 50-70 mostly.

Just when I was leaving, I'll stay pending the situation remaining the same.

And Now for something completely different, as the Pythons used to say. In Italy Vodafone and others face huge fines for sneakily changing monthly paid accounts to 28 days, thereby creating 13 'months' in the year. When you pay by direct debit to Postmobile, it's a month, but only 28 days using manual topup. I wonder are there eu directives in this regard. Do other operators' top up plans use the month rather than 28 days if you sign up for payment mandate.

    Sneaky.

I got over 100 in one spot

But then it's single digits or under 1mb the rest of the time.

In a cafe and had 3 different networks to test. My an post got one at at 7 then 8 then sub 1mb after that constantly. Basically unusable. I'm going to check my phone with a different network sim. But I'll probably port to something else at this point.

A week into the "fix" and not a bother. I've done tons of speedtests in lots of locations from Cork to Dublin, urban and rural. Tests are all 80-100ms pings and giving great speeds. I'm assuming all problems have been resolved.

Max speed was 110, mostly in 40-60 range. Bad rural getting 3-4, not getting the sub 1 in the last week

Mines still mostly unusable. Every now and then I get a decent speed but then drops back to crawling. I'm testing an Eir sim in another phone and It's getting 11-15 and faster speeds.

COuld it be a dodgy SIM card? Anyone else having any luck this week?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,162 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I wonder is it my phone.

Deezell will probably chip in soon and that'll shed some light on it

I was reading this earlier, I done a quick test and wasn't getting great results. Not unusable, but 2-3.5 Mbs. I only noticed then that it was 3G. Tried it half an hour later from the other side of the house, connected with 4G (LTE), and 21.4.

Happy out, but it got me thinking. A lot of my previous rubbish data rates were labelled LTE, I'm wondering was there a glitch which put me on 3G when 4G was available and clearly stated on phone info bar. If it thinks you're getting 4G but you've been hooked up to 3G you're only going to get single digit speed.

I was reading a tech paper recently and a lot of a particular MVNO's connection problems were related to APNs stored in the phone, bits and pieces not correct. I've also experienced connection problems with a dodgy sim or possibly a misconfiguration of that sim on the AnPost configurator. A new sim sorted it out. The entire Postmobile CRM, Database and configuration system and website is a bespoke third party system provided by ASPIDER, the Dutch MVNE. An post just input a fixed set of data to it. Its possible that a gremlin or "typo" in your SIM data is giving odd results. A visit to the Post office and port to a shiney new one might help.

Now I've to sort my smart DNS settings, which enables BBC iplayer outside of UK. Connection went AWOL last night. Maybe iplayer is in mourning and is turned off, like the rest of the UK. Beating the system is a constant battle.

We have two mobiles on an Post Mobile. Both have the same problem. So while not impossible they are from a bad batch. Seems unlikely.

I'm testing an Eir sim at the moment. See how that compares.

I might try getting a new sim. But there are better deals now.

Ironically I found my testing of 48 last 2 weeks that it kept changing to 3G in a big town for no reason when there was ample 4G on a three phone. Don't get that issue from postmobile, in fact I get 4G in plenty of rural environs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,162 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Mine is set o prefer 5G, I've set it to 4G no difference. Getting 0.48 now.

They definitely improved something. My partners An Post phone now matches my Vodafone phone in a speed test. Both got 34 mbs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,162 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

In the middle of a local park today was getting 135+Mbps and the other AP sim saw 150-175 !!! The Eir sim only getting 30-50 which is the first time it's been slower. Back home though still getting poor speeds on AP. Be interesting to see if the improvements stay.

It'll be interesting to see if they are actually improving things. I switched to 3's Prepay Hero plan (also €15) last week because AP has gone so bad. The last straw was when the network started dropping out. Even a replacement sim and carefully re-inputting the settings didn't solve that. If they do actually solve the issues I'll go back - the Vodafone coverage is a big attraction.
