Audi A6

Was considering buying a brand new 2020 Madza CX-5 for about 40k, keep it for as long as it will run within reason.

Having second thoughts now on whether to go for a used Audi A6 or similar instead (Couldn't afford new 60k+). Would consider up to 45k.
Love the look of this:


I was wondering what might be a reason for it depreciating from 59k to 49k in less than 1 year? Is that normal?

Might it drop another few thousand once we hit 2020?

A very very rough guide I have always used for cars, and to be fair, it's never that far off....

Every 3 years, they will halve in value,

So if it's 60k new, in 3 years it will be 30k, thus dropping approx 10k a year, so doesn't seem too far out to be honest

That car will lose a fortune over next year or two. How much can it be brought in uk for ? It’s worth that plus a thousand for the cost and inconvenience!

Holy molly, that's some price difference from the UK.
Had heard in news and from friends that they were a good bit cheaper.....so about €32k with current exchange rate plus VRT at 23%? total of about 40k sound right?

17% vrt I think, based on first car in the search link. 117g Km co2 , in January it might go up when nox is taken into account.

That depreciation is normal, it's savage on anything expensive. I bought a 2014 last year for 20k with only 60k kms on the clock.
Like that one, black paint with S Line black edition styling too.
The new a6 is beautiful and I will be getting one when they drop a bit more.

What are the chances of Irish dealers knocking good bit off to come closer to UK price if I point out examples to them?
The Galway one for 49k for example, they likely to drop to 42/43k even?

zero I’d say. They will get people to pay the asking or near it! Most people are very lazy. The “ value” or lack thereof here for “ luxury “ cars is comedy !

the s a serious jump value wise. Depreciation is spectacular on cars like you linked to , because they are so much cheaper in the uk. Buy that car for fifty k now and I wouldn’t be surprised if a dealer offered you thirty k as a trade in this time next year !

Yeah kind of guessed that.
So looking at about a 10k price saving for same car from the North.
2 years worth of €400 per month savings, I'll cruise down the Shankill road with Christy Moore blaring from my A6 for that saving!

Yes, the avant is the best looking estate car out there. Was in the last model and still is.
If you don't know much about the cars be aware that you might not be comparing like for like. An S Line black edition with a few extras would be a much more expensive car than an SE with no extras. It's about 5k dearer new. And extras can be eye watering the amount they charge for them.
The avant is a small bit dearer than the saloon as far as I know.

If you're really planning that, I wouldn't worry too much about depreciation it won't affect you as you won't be selling it..

I'll confirm this in importing thread if you're unsure but have I miscalculated VRT. I used 17% of used price 27,000.
Should it be 17% of the new sale price in Ireland at date of manufacture? (I hope not!)

VRT is based on the Original Market Value here, so yes, I'm afraid you'll have to price again

That's some depreciation, 10k per year on average.
Would hope to keep it for many years so not too worried about resale value at least.

Yeah it's about 20% a year on a reducing balance method if you've ever studied any accounting which, as another poster quite rightly mentioned is about 50% every 3 years

1 year old 48k
2 years old 38
3 years old 30k
4 years old 24k
5 years old 19k
6 years old 15k
7 years old 10k

Holds true in real world too.... My 4 and a half year old A6 was 20k, bought in Ireland. I'll keep it for 3 years hopefully, change it in 2021

Would the S Line Saloon or Avant be ok on Irish country roads?
We live in the country side but close to Motorway, so will be doing a mixture of motorway driving and windy country roads.

Oh yeah perfectly fine, a bit more firm than the SE for sure but won't be a problem. Still a very comfortable car

Yup we have a 2011 2L tdi sline A6 with almost 300k kms on the clock

Test drive it. If it’s an S line with the 20 inch wheels it might be a bit unbearable on bumpy roads. Road noise is a factor too.

Yeah will prob stick try stick to 19 inch ones.
Problem with test driving is I suppose it depends where the garage is and if any country roads close to it. Might try find one in Ireland and test drive there as plenty of our town roads are bumpy too, maybe they will match a uk price for me too (in my dreams!)

Looks lovely alright.
Kind of have mind set on the newer 2018+ s line model though with tech pack and in Daytona gray.
Hopefully my requirements are not too specific that I’ll be waiting forever for one to appear up north (would be handier than going to mainland uk€

You would be mad not to buy in the UK. A friend just bought a very high spec 2019 A6 avant from a main Audi dealer with only 8,000 miles.
On the road in Ireland VRT paid for €38,000.

Is Avant not Audi estate cars?

Also, Audi 2.0l are generally FWD whereas 3.0l are Quattro. Something to check when comparing prices as the latter will obviously be more expensive, but have better driving dynamics.

Dont suppose you have any details on exactly what they got? Link to car or dealer?
Did the dealer give discount on advertised price?
