Ha! I know that car. Owner is very mechanically minded. You can be sure that car was well looked after.

Long time since you’ve been round these parts Unkel!

Yeah, I guess about a year or so. Was a pleasant surprise seeing you posting up that car within a minute of me dipping in here again :)

T’would be rude not to go and make a cheeky offer if you’re in the locality!

I won't be starting any mad wars about what bangernomics cars are supposed to be, but for me that car is right up there. A good bit of NCT left, loads of comfort and luxury, a simple old skool setup with a petrol engine and no dodgy bits that go wrong like in modern diesels and the tax is not too crippling with it being just a 2l engine (€710 per year)

Elon musk took a lot of inspiration from the vel satis it seems!

I will take a wild guess, Renault 19?

edit: I'm wrong rear side window is different. The back looks like it though.

    Hi Boardsies,

Looking for some advice - I am going to look at a 2004 BMW 520i SE next Tuesday. Being doing some research online and in the most looks like they are a generally reliable car.

Is there anything in particular that I should be looking for. I know the owner and he is meticulously about maintaining his car. Asking price is around €1800.

    Cheers

    Money pit comes to mind.

€1800 for a very old car, that's nuts.

€710 yearly tax and then insurance could be a problem too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

    They’re 2.2, so tax is 951

1800 is expensive for one of those, especially a 04

Petrol engines in those came in 2.2 2.5 and 3L. 2.5 was the best all rounder , 25bhp more for relatively little extra euro , given the farcical cc based motor tax system here ...

Will it be your first bm ?

    It's a €1k car at best.

It's going to be a money pit either way.

I'd be looking at others unless you move well up the years.

Yes it will. Although I did own a P38 RR with the 2.5d BMW engine in it and found it solid.

Was a sad day when I let that go.

There is a nice looking 04 525i automatic on Donedeal in Kildare at the minute, with NCT til next year, for €1299.

€1800 for an 04 520 is a lot. For that money it would want a nice bit of tax or something on it to sweeten the deal.

Thanks Duke - I will go have a look at that online.

This car has been very well looked after though and I know it hasn't been abused and regular maintenance done. Alloys and leather upholstery have big recently been refurbed.

Also the €1800 was a figure that was just thrown out there - I'm expecting to be down around the €1400/€1500 mark

Has it cruise control? My old 520i had it and you really miss not having it on long journeys.

My 520i was a 1998 so the 2 litre version. I paid €600 for it five years ago.

I sold my '04 520i for about €2,600 over 3 years ago. And that was a bit of a premium over the going rate of around €2k at the time, because I had a full size spare alloy, the car had a good bit of NCT left, had low mileage and was serviced and in very good condition. Bit of a stunner it was. Also the last BMW I have owned :(

So yes, €1,800 is a lot for one now, unless it is in superb condition and has good tax / NCT left

You’d be mental to pay anything over a grand.

We had a fair share of 520i here... Exp. two and half a year ago, a 2005 one was mentioned here (https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057729711).

Asking €1800 for 2004 today is madness.

    NCT till Feb 2021, 1 owner, 19k miles! €950

Its pricey, but how nice is this?

19k miles on this too. 1 owner, but curiously an import.

NCT til March 2020, bit of tax, €450. I like it!

I would buy it as I'm selling my LS 460 and looking for something cheap and cheerful.

Its a bargain imho. My brother has the 2.0 turbo which is fantastic, its a pity it isnt that engine. But still a great deal.
