Did anyone have their interview with sergeant in their own house, my daughter sent me a text to say she will be. I have never heard of this and just wondering if anyone knows why this would be? Also, I assume she is a good way into vetting progress as meeting sergeant ?

I wouldn't be too worried about it to be honest. It's usually as simple as they are in the area serving warrants/summons or whatever. The sgt usually does the prep for the Inspector meeting. The Inspector will grill you formally then at the station. Suit and tie job. The Sgt meeting is quite informal. Just go down through the form checking and takes any questions you may have.

Thanks for reply, we live 5 mins away from station so thought it was a bit odd as would have thought sergeant would be in it most of the time although it is a part time station

Sorry if questions have already been asked and answered but got the date for the physical test Friday 12th April and and a bit nervous!

I'm heading up from Waterford and thinking of actually staying over the night before, would anyone recommend that as opposed to heading up that morning? Did travelling and being up extra early affect anyone on the day?

Also any girls that have done the physical, are they very strict on the push ups? As in my bum rises up a little while doing them but not much at all, just wondering how strict they are or would they let me know while doing them to readjust?

And any advice or good tips for the push pull as I'm not the strongest at 5'5 tall?

I drove from Waterford on the morning, left at about 7 and was there by 8:20! Booked the templemore arms originally but the drive helped with the nerves big time so would say you could save yourself €70 by just driving! For push pull try rowing machine, a prowler, push ups and on the day just use all your energy on the push pull and you’ll be grand!

I answered this before so I'm just going to copy and paste my answers to you.
I'm 5'6 (male) and did the PCT last week and had no problems. When I went in to do the push-pull I was aware of what was required of me. The instructors/testers in the room along with me during the push/pull test said that short people and women have the most difficulty with it. They give you a test run beforehand so use the most of it. My advice to you is put everything on your balance and you'll fly it no problem. So use a wide Karate/Boxing stance when doing the push pull and fully extend yourself at each beep back and forth. Literally, try and break that F'n machine.
For the running, I downloaded an app called 'Beep test' onto my phone from the app store. It had a plain green logo on it with an outlined white runner. It was a brilliant help preparing me for it. I found it straightforward as I had it well prepared. The best advice I can give you about the beep test is to be as relaxed as possible. The day of my PCT, the first group who went in and did the beep test failed it. We were watching them from the hallway windows. The reason why was they completely jumped the gun and were going way too fast and burned themselves out. You need to keep good breathing and timing for it.
Break it down for yourself, example, Level 1 is 8 seconds per beep so focus on your breathing and timing. Breathe at the even numbers when counting in your head. Get your mind working with your lungs and focus on keeping relaxed breathing until level 6. This is where it picks up. I had to do 8.8, which was no problem for me as I had plenty of gas in the tank from breathing properly. Another big advance is to get stuck in and keep a good team mentality with your group. Motivate them and they'll do the same for you. Having someone motivate you and cheer you on when you need it does wonders for yourself.
I compared my app to this Youtube video and there's very little in the difference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0U_yQITBks
I had to do 35 situps in a min and got them done with 7-10 seconds to spare.
Not going to lie, I was nervous for the pushups section. I had to do 25 and thankfully got them done no problem. I thought they'd want the US Marine Military style ones Where your chest would be nearly touching the floor and you would have to fully extend your elbows and lock it out when pressing up off the ground. Don't worry this isn't the case. They want to see your elbows match your shoulder blades when descending during your reps. So you don't necessarily have to go down very far to the ground. This could differ with a tester if they are old school or not. Each candidate has their own tester who counts your reps (Same tester for press ups and situps). So If you get some very strict person use your rest position as much as you want. Like do 5 press ups, go into the downward dog rest position for 30 seconds get your breath back do another 5 and repeat the cycle. If you have a person who isn't strict on form, blast out your press ups and get it over and done with because you have a 2-hour break afterward. I had around 12 mins rest between the beep test and the pushups and situps.
I asked my tester about the rest position just after I finished the situps exercises and before doing the press ups section and I was told by them that this is fine to do. (It all depends on who you have as a tester).
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf-Y9oQNYVQ
I can't find the exact video I watched where I found that it said that this was allowed in most physical exams but this video shows the exact same movement which I'm talking about. As long as your not bending your knees or lifting your hands and feet off of the mat then you're fine.
Now I couldn't think of a name to describe it earlier so I just write it down as the downward dog. (apologies for that.)
I saw in other videos as well that the same rest position is permitted in the US and UK militaries entry physical exams.
(As I said it really all depends on how strict your tester is on the form). I didn't even need to use it during the press ups as my adrenaline kicked in and I flew through them, but If that wasn't the case I got clarification on it beforehand and they said 'yep that's fine'.
I stayed up in Templemore the night before as I had to come up from Donegal. I would recommend staying up as you have one less thing to worry about. Like if you sleep in or if your car broke down etc. It better to be safe than sorry.

Does anyone know if it would be a good idea to apply for the 2019 recruitment that was opened today? I'm currently waiting for a resit on my physical having failed the beep test and I'm just sort of anxious should something go wrong on the day that it'll be 18 months to 2 years before I'll get a chance to apply again.

I was wondering if we would be allowed to apply while at this stage I’m coming 33 this month and running out of time... wouldn’t want to lose another year

Absolutely apply, keep your options open.

I suppose a quick email to Garda HMR wouldn't do any harm I was hoping to have the fitness done before the next campaign was announced so I'd have a definite answer if I'd have to apply again.

Hi All, wondering could anyone help me? I completed interview in Feb and was placed at about 800 OOM but I haven’t hear a thing since. I saw today that there is a new recruitment campaign launched.... wondering should I apply or just wait?

Same as your self 800s but I was told by a guard who’s in his 2nd year templemore that the OOM isn’t what it’s made out to be? He said he was higher on OOM list than 2 fellas he knew and he was called before them

I had my interview in jan 19 got my results in march and was placed 802 i also havnt heard a word. I know two different guards in templemoore one was waiting 8 months the other was a month or two i guess its just a waiting game

Hi everyone, just a quick question regarding the career services stage 1 course. Is the difficulty of the course of similar difficulty to the real stage 1 exams, thanks in advance!!!!

Probably should be asking this in the 2019 thread, however, yes, it is quite difficult and confusing (assuming this is the patterns and all that stuff?), but everyone finds it this way, so you just need to do your best.

I did my interview in Feb and placed 814 and I haven’t heard a thing either! Rang HRM and they could tell me a thing only that ‘you’ll be contacted in due course’ I know someone that placed around 400 and they are doing the fitness at the end of the month!

It’s such a slow process wonder will I ever hear a thing

    Hi all,
Hope the process is going well for everyone.
Those that have done the beep test is it level 8.1 for 26-35 year olds? I thought I read 8.3 but online it says 8.1, it's not much of a deference but on the day it could make all the difference lol. Also when you get to your level do you stop? How do they know you stopped at your level and not stopped to early.

Cheers, 8.1 is much better lol. Its probably the most nerve wrecking part of the process for me

As far as I know they call out at the start of each level

What way is the push pull marked for pass and fail

Check out the video but if you miss more than 2 consecutive beeps or push/pull a force less than that required it’s a fail

25kg to pass unless you get the compensation. If you do the obstacle course under 3 mins you get 2.5kg off, works the opposite way too! It’s 20 seconds you must maintain same level, they will tell you after what you got and if you passed.

The test announces the level and you must stop at your own level. No extra points for doing more lol
