One of the weakest Galway sides in a long time, serious amount of backs playing!

Huge amount of players unavailable to be fair but never seen a manager that loves selecting backs up in the forwards more than Walsh.

Surely Cunningham from headford deserves a run? He slogged away with the panel last year, played with the juniors too. He must feel like he's wasting his time altogether when you see the likes of Duane named at 11. Madness.

That's a nice side with plenty of youngsters for the hurling. Footballers very uninspiring but any win over Cavan would be crucial so hopefully it all clicks on Sunday.

Good of Aston Villa to release Jack Grealish for the weekend :p

I'd have given him a run in this match. Duane will hardly play 11. Might play a sweeper role or something. Walsh will probably operate at 11.

I think Walsh is hindered by sigerson, Corofin, injuries. But that's a very poor team. If Cavan have a half decent team, they will this match.

It's terribly bad, and I'm unsure if Finnerty will tog either. KW is very constrained with injuries and unavailabilty etc. but he's brought some of this down on his own back. Very uninspiring management and squad deployment it must be said.

Big opportunity for some of the squad hurlers to put up their hand. Four Turlough' starters and three from Ahascragh, not something you'd predict too often, but all worth their shot. Midfield looks very useful.

One of the worst managers to get a 5 year stint.

He complained about injuries last week yet put out a full strength team for an FBD game so caused some of them.

Surely though 5 is the end of the road so we can start to progress next year and most of the lads are young anyway.

I don't for a second buy we made progress under him.
Winning Connachts, playing in D1 and a one last 4 placing is something we should always attain too given our resources and the return was coming either way talent wise.

You're not beating Dublin unless you're winning as many kickouts as them and competing the oppositions as well.
It's the one thing you start with and if you don't tick that box you can forget about it and KW just doesn't see that angle after all these years.

Might be a false line up different team could line out :(

Talent wise has always been there for Galway and many managers before Walsh tried and failed to get the best out of the resources there.

Galway had gone eight years without winning a Connacht title, were many years playing Div 2 football and hadn't won a game in Croke park or reached AI semi final for decades. Maybe another manager will take Galway further but you can't ignore the progress Galway have made since Walsh arrived.

Walsh is entitled to be Galway manager . A hero as a player . Got to a league final last year for a team that was supposed to be relegated . Won Connacht and got out of super 8 s . Well beaten in semi final but no major shame in that against the best team of all time according to most . Indeed if not for missed pen and lot of missed chances could have been closer . He will be under review again during and after season but for now he’s Man for the job and lets get behind him

I think the best of this Galway team will probably come under another manager rather than Walsh. He is very conservative in his team selections, style of play, etc. It would be churlish though not to admit that he's got Galway in a better place than when he arrived into the job. There is a serious amount of young talent in the squad and on the fringes of the squad that should mature over the next few years so it might be the next manager (if the right one is selected) who gets to benefit the most from it.

Yeah, for all his flaws, Walsh has Galway at a level way beyond where Mulholland had them. Always felt Mulholland messed up by bringing through too many under 21s at the same time. But his tenure was diabolical.

    HT. Galway 1-15 laois 0-07

Galway played with the breeze in the first half.

    Really poor second half.

Thought Hussey, the two Mannions and Blehane were pretty good.

Thousands left at full time before the Cavan match.

    Routine win for the hurlers.

Not a lot of optimism about the footballers chances today. Hopefully they'll prove us wrong.

    What's the breeze like?

5 changes to the football team. You'd wonder what's the point in naming teams at all?

Silke, Cooke, McDaid, Burke and Cunningham all start.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,210 ✭✭✭✭RMAOK

Surprised that the two corofin lads are out today

I'd say Walsh knows he needs a win today especially with the tough fixtures to come. 4 of the remaining 6 matches are away from home.

You could well be right, but it's not going to plan at the moment - a few points down.

    0-5 all at HT.

Kevin Walsh must have Galway practicing lateral hand passing every training session. They need to move the ball quicker up the field.

    Galway 0-13 Cavan 0-11

    Better 2nd half thankfully.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,210 ✭✭✭✭RMAOK

Sounded from Galway Bay FM that the footballers made it very hard on themselves near the end of the second half.

They needed that win as I'm sure the dubs will be looking to make up for their loss to Monaghan next Saturday.

To try to fool Cavan into thinking they were playing as selected. Up to 11 championship starters for Galway today IMO so expected win or be it closer than it should have been.

What did ye think of Cavan lads? Northern Sound commentary reckon we threw it away end of first half in a ten minute spell where we had 7 potential scores wide/dropped short.

Wasn't impressed. Not sure you will survive based on what I saw.
