Closer to a game you would see on St. Stephen's day charity game than a competitive league game. New lads Murphy nothing of note to do in goals but dealt with it all comfortably. Brennan did nothing wrong. Kilcommins is very quick but needs a more consistent end product. Ja Mannion was poor. Haran best of the lot. Accurate from all over the pitch.

GMac poor full back giving away stupid frees. P. Mannion looked better after a horrendous 2019. JC easily back into the grove. Different animal next week.

Footballers scraping by Monaghan. Looks like we'll struggle in the league. Unlikely to beat or draw with Kerry based off that. Alot of lads blowing early in the 2nd half so they look like they haven't much fitness work done so far either
Mulkerrin was good, midfield is a concern and we're still not working a system on kick outs. At this stage the goalkeeper should be your quarterback and there should be set plans in place for him to indicate what he wants on every kick out.

The kickouts are the same as under KW... zero plan.
Anything short was kicked to someone with his back to the play outside the D which is very risky in two regards(blindsided and ref might throw it up)
Still trying to man mark on the defensive end as well which doesn't work...just mark space. Analyse Dublin and replicate, they wouldn't have won 5 in a row doing what we do on both ends.

Anyway that was expected based of the U20s last season.

Far better from open play and we created a good 4 or 5 goal chances, hate to see players putting them over the bar as youll hardly get an open net and taking even 50% of them makes you next to impossible to beat.

It was an important game to win as apart from Meath there isnt any bankers there.

Too open at the back. No hiding places or blanket in place to hide a lack of desire to track back and defend which at times we were badly caught out from and better teams would of carved us up. We have better defenders returning so hopefully we can improve on this.

Gleeson did ok. Penalty save was obviously a big moment but some of his mid range kick outs were shockingly poor. I think he went to O Laoi twice in the first half and being not the biggest he lost both. Didn't think either was on. Scan came in a couple of times and eventually he started going shorter more regularly.

Varley and Walsh were again to the fore up front. Both took a fair degree of punishment too. Finnerty took his goal well and should of had a second. Comer pointed when he should of passed for a goal.

PJ and management have a huge job because this style of play is 100% reliant on players defensively being able to hold their own one on one. Hard to think we have that in abundance.

Only a final note Monaghan should probably of won. The goal caught on the line the Galway lad seemed to fall back over the line. Sometimes you get the breaks.

I don't know why it has to be either the blanket defence of kw with 14 behind the ball or the man for man of past Galway managers and now PJ. There is a very obvious half way house that shores up the defence whilst keeping an attacking outlet. I surprised Divilly isn't insisting on this as his Siegerson teams would have had a good blend of both. Early days but you get a feeling that this is the stall Joyce is setting out and there won't be much moving from it.

Didn't think we got the breaks at all. Deegan seemed to give them everything in the second half, including two shocking decisions which broke up Galway play and led to Monaghan scores. Finnerty needs to be taking that goal chance, which would've been game over. Albiet his first finish was classy.

Worryingly open at the back in the first half. Can't complain about any of the defenders, indeed I though John Daly especially and Mulkerrin were our two best players and Henaey and Duane stuck in there well. Just so vunerable to runners from deep. Monaghans half back line was strong but still, we'll be torn asunder by the Dubs if that keeps up. As I said though, the backs themselves did as well as can be expected.

Forward play was excellent in chance creation, if the shooting was a bit off. Should've had a few goals. Hard to blame Barrett for tapping over given its his first real game but Comer should've passed and Finnerty finished. In saying that, the fact we won was in a large part down to Comer. Walsh showed good leadership having taken loads of abuse. Makeshift midfield did ok. Plenty of encouraging signs and plenty to work on.

I'd be hesitant to blame Gleeson for kickouts. That's all down on management. This is at least the 4th keeper over the last 3/4 years that has the same laboured hit and hope kickout strategy. I was really hoping PJ would have these lads better prepared for them. We were destroyed by Monaghan in that area. Beggan really put is to shame.

Was also frustrated by the mental breakdown in front of goal in the second half. Turned over or wasted some straight forward chances to put daylight between us.

Very impressed by Varley, John Daly and D'Arcy. Varley was a nightmare all day for them.

Lot of work to be done but early days yet and a positive result to get.

In fairness Beggan is probably the best in the country at it. Amazing ability to ping the ball 50 yards right into the chest of a Monaghan player. Not every keeper can do that needless to say.

I'd love to have Beggan. Hitting free men from every kickout and a top freetaker. What they were doing with him from open play was very exciting and would love to see them keep it up in championship. Gives an extra player on every attack.

On a side point, will never cease to amaze me how excited a Galway crowd gets by a goalkeeper coming out of goal. Majority of the fan base still stuck in the 90s.

Gleeson had no movement most of the time, so wouldn't blame him too much. Kickouts could've been better obv. He's clearly a very good shotstopper. Would say Power will be in there ultimately

Gleeson is a big fella and looks like a great shot stopper being a former soccer keeper. The save from the penalty was top class as it was a well hit penalty. He had to stretch for it.

How they coach him on kickouts will probably decide his future. Second half every kickout seemed to be dinked out straight in front to a free Galway defender. Can't do that all the time as other sides will eventually push up on them.

Beggan can't hit them if they're not moving and it's something Monaghan have done pretty well over the last few years. We on the other hand are second only to moving statues. It's not that difficult to come up with a number of set plays. Jesus an American football team could have 120 to work off, we only need about 8.

He was worth the admission fee alone. A class player.

No doubt he's excellent and we'd love to have him but he wouldn't look as good playing with Galway as he does with Monaghan as our movement is brutal

Just going to focus on the positives with my analysis, I'll do plenty of moaning later in the year.

-Good to get the win. Two very hard away games coming up so the team could easily have ended up with zero points from three games and staring relegation in the face. Already it looks like beating Meath will be enough to keep their place in Division 1.

-Decent sized crowd and a good atmosphere/vibe from the football supporters. Keeping that going will be important. The countys finances needs both teams to be drawing solid crowds.

-John Daly is continuing to improve at centre back. Some lovely play from him yesterday. Varley looked better than he did at any point last year. Interesting to see if he'll keep his place when Joyce has a full strength team. He is trying to stake a claim anyway.

-Finnerty, Mulkerrins and Gleeson already look like good solid additions to the setup. Finnerty could well have finished with a hat trick yesterday.

-Obviously it was disappointing to let Monaghan back in to the game but the team still managed to dig it out in the end. Unfortunately Galway have developed a bit of a track record of losing control of matches and not being able to respond. Last year's Connacht final was a prime example, well on top then lost the heads entirely.

-McDaid didn't get himself a black card for the first time this year. Must be improving his technique rapidly. ;)

Hard to say much about the hurling.

Straight into the frying pan for Steede. Is it just him or are there other Corofin lads back in the panel?

Ml. Daly very lucky to hold on, following last week's showing, would have thrown Paul Conroy in there instead. HF line beefed up with Comer and Brannigan's inclusions. Steede an interesting choice, though I'm not sure is he a whole lot more mobile than Conroy in this area, a prerequisite for Saturday night.

Power, Silke, Molloy, Kerin, FOC, Tom Flynn, Antaine O Laoi and as you said Ian Burke will be pushing hard.

You have the rest of the Corofin lads and I've a feeling due to midfield issues Enda Tierney will get a look and depending on PJs choice maybe Matt Tierney (still U20 this year)
