Not sure I agree with this at all. Maybe if your talking about the entire concept, but the pricing point on the 4090's are ridiculous. Appreciate it's enthusiast level, but there is no real justification for it imo.

Absolutely no issue with anyone buying one, could buy one myself. But considering most folks who buy at this level keep refreshing on newer releases, I'd argue its dreadful value for money.

For comparison I just bought a new set of irons for golf. Top end stuff, 1250EUR. My last set lasted ten years :D

Is there like any justifications or reason behind why those cards are an absolute abomination in terms of size? Keep saying it but whoever gets back to small form factors is getting my money. The sizing has got ludicrous.

haha nope absolutely wouldn't. Sure be an animal graphics card, but just not what I need. And the most advanced piece of tech is stretching it. Especially when their selling you the new one in like a years time :D

But I'm sure there are lads out getting new golf clubs every year. Because last year's are not as good. Be cause of x or y feature. Your arguement started off saying it's an enthusiast card but that you couldn't see the point in it. Because you're not an enthusiast for GPUs. But you bought some expensive clubs to last a decade. If a normal person bought a 4090, it'd last a decade. Swings and roundabouts I guess

The difference is, many of the people who buy cards like the 4090 aren't going to use it for 10 years because they're ultra enthusiasts.

Surprisingly few get full value out of the top tier cards because they're upgrading at huge cost regularly just to have the latest shiny thing.

Anyway, the idea that 2k on a GPU is good value because it'll last 10 years is fairly weak, but people do make that argument. It's far, far cheaper to buy a new card every 2 years and sell the old one on while it still holds reasonable value. 10 years down the line you've spent less/the same and have better performance with all the latest feature sets.

Interesting info from Igor's lab here. The 4090's are bigger than they need to be because the decision to go with TSMC over Samsung came too late. Those giganto cards are engineered for a less efficient 600 watts Samsung chip, not the 450 watt TSMC.

I'm 70% sure I'm going to buy a 4090. I was looking at getting a new-old stock 3090/ti but the prices are just ridiculously high and between the few new features and performance upgrade the 4090 just makes more sense. I was a lot more unsure before I went through the various leaks where it seems like the power issues were vastly overestimated and the performance upgrade seems to be a bit more substantiated than the vague apple-esque Nvidia provided barcharts

where will I be able to buy a founders edition card? Nvidia website seems to think Ireland uses sterling so will they even ship it here? Any of the UK retailers are out because I can get exvat within EU but I'd still be hit for uk import charges

Going to be a business purchase (genuinely) so it'll be cheaper to me than a lot of people paid for 3080s and stuff in the last couple of years from scalpers

There are several justifications. For me at least.

Number one. Longevity. My 1080 lasted over six years. I' m still using it. I've gotten amazing value out of it but it's starting to show it's age. You can't do 4k with a 1080 with anything modern and it's even chugging a little at 1440 with the eye candy on. It's time for an upgrade. The 4090 will likely last me another six years if I keep it til my next upgrade.

Number two. Usage. I spend a lot of time on my PC. I have no issue spending money on things I'm going to use every day. For example, I'm at my PC a lot during the day. So, I don't sit on some **** IKEA chair, I'm sitting on a leather chair with a footrest. It's like sitting on a cloud. If I'm going to be parking me arse in front of a PC for 4+ hours a day.....it makes sense to get something quality. Same logic applies to the PC itself.

Number three. You deserve to enjoy a hobby or two and invest in it. I golf....and I game. Thats my hobbies so if I'm not going to spend what little disposable income I have on my hobbies.....what else am I going to spend it on?

Don't get me wrong. It's horrifically overpriced. I'm not blind to that. The 4070 should be around 500, the 4080 around 700 and the 4090 around 1,000. It's double that. I get it. But the three reasons I listed above are my justifications for letting nvidia gouge me.

My 1080TI 8600K @ 4,5ghz combo is still doing the business for 1440P gaming with the majority of games @100 fps + once it sustains 90fps im happy.

Ofcourse some i dont run at max settings textures,lighting shadows etc still i run at max but on some games i turn off post processing which depending on the game can be fugly anyways , i prefer a clean image.

Whats even more bonkers is its not even just by address, if you try use a UK address you still cant use an Irish debit or credit card. Back in early 2021 when i was complaining to them they said they could figure some way out that I could email them the details but their site just wont accept it. I asked how then can I buy an FE card as they are gone in under a minute and they had no reply.

They're the official nvidia seller for the UK and Ireland and yet they won't ship to Ireland. Got in contact with Nvidia about it before and they just said use scan if you are in Ireland.

The FE is a good bit cheaper than the AIB cards, and comes with a great cooler (supposedly).

Just could just say you have money to burn. Otherwise, you should wait for the 4080 release. Everything else you said is just a lot of crap, doesn't make any sense.

PS, the 1080 is not equivalent to the 4090, the Titan X (pascal) was. Which was going for like 1400 yoyos back then and basically got shot out of it in 1 generation. Like the 3080ti, the 3080, the Titan RTX and so on.

It seems to be performing well ahead of expectations, it certainly dismisses some of the performance rumours that have lingered since the series was unveiled. I think it bodes well for the 4080, particularly the 16GB model.
