Very dramatic close up on pat and point to the camera all to go to a break.

are you saying traveller children are genetically incapable of learning at the same rate as a normal settled child ? or is it because of practices in the travellers own community that aren't conducive to educating a child ?

... or just possibly, the aggregate effect of the "settled" community treating them like complete crap?

Key reasons cited below. Previous generations have very poor levels of literacy, the way to change that is to offer more supports to accommodate for that. There's no way you can change that historical aspect besides such supports. By providing such supports, the trust relationship with the parents increases. When people like you reduce them to criminals from birth, you contribute to that distrust btw.
She said among the barriers to progression are the fact that around 70% of Traveller children live in families where the mother has no formal education, or has primary level education only, almost half have difficulty reading instructions for medications, there is a distrust of the routes society provides for progression to third level, and Traveller history and culture is virtually ignored, not valued or supported in the school curriculum.

Also worth noting the article shows every indication that providing supports works. The benefit is generational. Meanwhile, you likely think it's outrageous to offer such supports. It isn't.

Higgins is rattled, Caseys traveller comments are the biggest applause of the night.

Well casey will need more than one comment on travellers to win the election. I seriously doubt that enough people will vote for him based on that.

I don't think he'll win by any means but it shows how easy it is to rattle the others if you have an actual good idea.

There it is again, the SF lady says her speech in both English and Irish. I did not understand the Irish bits. Why does she bother? What is the point?
Pick 1 language and make your speech in that 1 language. 100% of people watching will understand it in English.

The Irish inserts were just fake and pretentious and make her look like a typical SF fanatic.

It's also pipe for what she'll presumably slip in later, about Ballyvourney being the Most Oppressed Parish Ever.

Freeman - sooo whiny on the funding

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

MDH seems a bit all over the place. In fairness they are all gunning for him

Gallagher and Duffy are some pain in the holes & Freeman is far too straight laced for my liking. Higgins, Ní Riada & Casey are the most likeable.

I dislike casey even before his comments on travellers which were ill advised. I've been impressed by how Ni Riada has handled herself.

ahh yeah, blame settled people, people being suspicious of their da stealing is why a traveller child isn't showing up to school every single day for 12 years.

so basically its the traveller families own fault that the environment isn't there. Travellers cannot effectively raise and educate children to modern standards , so then perhaps tusla should get involved.

Higgins keeps referring people to his literature. Could it be that he doesn't actually know, or remember, what his policies are.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,048 ✭✭✭Brian201888

Assuming Casey doesn't withdraw he'll end up with a far higher vote than will be predicted. He's a pillock but I'll be amazed if he comes up with the vote that the polls are predicting.

Apart from anything else, has Casey said he'd move back to Ireland if he won? Doesn't he live in the US, and if so, it smells awfully like him being a possible Tax Exile. Which to me might make him a bit of a white collar crook and unfit to run. Nevermind the pie in the sky over this Irish diaspora social media. But one harsh comment over travellers and suddenly he's a darling in the eyes of some?

Freeman whinging again about political parties. Isn't she a Taoiseachs nominee to the Seanad?

Audience seem to applaud anything said with sufficient emphasis. IMO clapping should be banned at these events, it just encourages platitudes and grandstanding.

No because he was repeatedly not allowed to finish his answer to a question

As we saw during the campaign on the repeal of the 8th Amendment clapping can come across as very inappropriate.

Pat isn't going to let Ni Riada skate around this question...

Ni Riada - 'the big boys made me do it sir' defence

Honestly, there's something a bit inspiring about watching someone that old fighting for such a position, still trying to cling onto power.

On the topic of white collar crime, probably worth reminding younger readers that Saint Mickey Dee the socialist had no problem with voting for the corrupt Reynolds/Ahern tax amnesty back in 1993; and Albert threw him TG4 as a thank-you.
