next June would be early enough to open the registrations:(

    Why?

Think of people who have to book travel and accomodation. Plus, if im going to focus a years training on a particular marathon im going to want to be sure of an entry.

I've signed up for this for next year, my first ever Marathon. Something to aim for.

Being sure of an entry 12 months out is one thing but not having a clue about your condition next year and possibly having taken up someone else's place and not being able to run it isn't ideal. I used to sign up for DCM on the last day of July every year even though i was training all year for it to minimise the chance of a wasted entry.

7000 signed up for next year already

Yeah, I can defo see your point of view, it seems like its all one way and that's the DCM's way.

Some on here would disagree especially those loyal to the DCM organisation.

But they struck gold when they changed it to Sunday and the bank knows this and are going to capitalise on it.

My video works for about 20 seconds and then says if I want to watch the rest, I have to sign up to some Asics thing.

Same for me now, signed up and got access to"full video". Complete waste tbh short clip at half, 20 miles and finish. Think it was only €5 but pretty lame

I find this hard to believe. They didn’t hit 7,000 for about 6 months last year, now it’s 6 days. This sort of money is hard to swallow.

Wouldn't be like a bank to not be transparent and upfront with the truth :pac:

I have to say the fact that they're sponsoring it is a turnoff for me already.
I wonder if this end of things is being monitored by a third party.
    I'm actually half serious.

There are a few reasons it may have reached 7k already.
A, People missed out on entry last year thinking it wouldn't sell so are now panic buying and getting in at lower price.
B, There seems to be more people running, its similar to the 80s again.
c, There seems to be more publicity around it than ever before including pop up pages all over FB etc. with runners groups etc.
    D, 40th anniversary

How are the bank capitalising on this? They are a sponsor, its going to sell out regardless of who sponsers it, you seem to think they have somehow driven this process. Entry has always opened just after the last one, the demand is huge, i dont think it would be any different regardless of who sponsers it?

First of all please dont tell me what I seem. I dont seem anything unless I've stated something as fact.

So you think the bank would've taken it over pre last year then?
They would've seen it as a dead duck before it sold last year.

They see the opportunity for advertisement etc and they're jumping on it.
Yes any successful business would do the same, the reason I say the bank is capitalising, is because its the bank who have taken it over.
They're not exactly a charity are they.

Yes but im sure DCM are charging them more than Airtricity to reflect the increased exposure so DCM win too.

    Banks arent charities - correct.

So whats your point, have you even got any proof of what you're saying or are ya painting a nice little argument that suits your train of thought?

There's Galway marathon at the start of October, and Longford is in September. But they aren't really competition. If Cork or Limerick was in the autumn, they would be smaller.

But there are plenty of marathons abroad, and lots of people who travel to them. Probably more Irish people run a foreign marathon in the autumn than run Limerick marathon, come to think of it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,442 ✭✭✭Trampas

Kbc put money into it. They get exposure but it’s not like they’re getting a cut of the entry fee.

Maybe GFA or previous entries will come in first and then a ballot. Maybe deferrals will be in this year. They could make it bigger but they’ll need to review everything and have everyone on board. It has reached that stage now where is it make 25,000 entry spots or more or stick with the 20,000 but course, councils and all stakeholders would need to be reviewed.

Great to see that it’s so popular when in 2012 it has no sponsor and you could sign up until end of September when entry closed

I’ve been a big fan of foreign marathons in autumn, which is probably why I have some of the opinions I have about DCM. At this stage, DCM is as big as it can get, ie the numbers need to be limited to 20,000. This is an amazing change since when I first ran in 2005. The flip side of that coin, though, is that we’re now in the position that we need to enter DCM in November, 11 months before the race to be guaranteed an entry to a city marathon in Ireland in autumn. (My apologies to Galway).

There are numerous other marathons in Ireland in September-November, and fantastic events they are, they’re niche. Monaghan, for example, is an excellent race, but numbers less than 130 and on forest trails is a very different experience to Dublin.

In most other European countries, there’s either a choice of autumn marathons, or like Warsaw, two marathons, one in spring and another in autumn. Lisbon and Porto marathons within a couple of weeks, Eindhoven and Amsterdam similar, countless medium sized marathons in Germany, UK, etc.

Maybe Galway marathon is best placed to prosper, but maybe a R n R marathon in Dublin could ease the burden too. Maybe I should stop being contrary and just cough up €83, I don’t know.

Lots of rumours that this is the year they will introduce transfers. They will have to do something about the national marathon championships too if they are going to sell out six months in advance.

Maybe something like London? GFA times and a certain number of places given to athletics clubs, could be something like 10% of club adult membership? Give clubs a deadline to book, and other entrants a deadline to cancel, and release a second batch of places?

Don't have a problem booking a year in advance, at least your guaranteed an entry.
London open their applications a full year in advance and you've no guarantee of a place.
Dublin is an outstanding event and it is great to see it grow so much in popularity.

Yeah, they've said in social media that theyintend introducing a refund option later in the year.

As a runner in 2012, it's amazing to see how DCM has flourished. Such a brilliant event,a testament to the team and volunteers. Re the sponsors, I wouldn't have imagined a sponsor had any input into the running of the event and it's the same team running this, or do representatives from the sponsor get involved?

It will be interesting to see what KBC puts into it and how it evolves.
At the moment we don't know a lot about anything really and everyone on the thread is speculating.

I would love to see it flourishing, we all would.

The only glimpse of anything substantial relating to DCM that I have seen, is your man from the DCM team giving a streamed interview on FB saying there could be an increase of numbers from 20,000 to possibly 22,000.
That and the fact that 7,000 places have gone in three days.

    This was/is my thinking also.
DCM team make all the final decisions. KBC may ask for certain thing but ultimately it's down to the the DCM crew themselves.

The race is just evolving and getting more popular. With such an increase in demand the best you can hope for is that the organisers move with it, and open up possibilities of transfers/deferrals refunds ect up to a certain date. Even if there was a nominal charge for a change it would be a positive move.

let’s say it’s sold out by Christmas it could really end up with 15,000 running as 10 months is a longtime in running. Hopefully it’ll offer deferral or name change up till a certain date to allow a waiting list but I believe something is in the pipeline but until it happens it’s in the pipeline. Kbc will probably want x and y (finish at the building around the corner from current finish) but shouldn’t effect the main running of the event.

I’d like to see it finish in o Connell street but never happen

Missed my very ambitious target, but delighted with knocking off over 11 and a half minutes off my PB. Was absolute carnage the last few kms, lads pulled up everywhere with injuries.

Head held very high at the end of it all.

Looking forward to next year. Time to push on-hopefully.
