Charge up your watch guys, and remove any pace alerts that may be on it.

I've follow this thread every year and it is absolutely the best bunch of novices by a long shot. Total harmony and support on every level, just a joy to follow.

Good luck with your race folks and start smart!

Probably won't have time to check in before the race. Best of luck to everyone.

Thanks again to the mentors. You have been invaluable for someone like myself running all my runs alone. Without the advice on here I am pretty sure I was 1 week away from being injured as I was doing every single run 6 days a week as hard as I could with a sprint finish. I posted on here wondering why I was starting to get very sore 1 month into this routine and thankfully the mentors here spotted my stupidity from my posts and told me where I was going wrong(very tactfully I might add given the insanity of what I was doing). I have safely gotten through injury-free and really appreciate the advice especially on pacing on the day as that was stressing me out.

I'll be with the 3.50 pacer to about half way all going well so say hello if you are there also.

On the train to Dublin now looking forward to a fab weekend and hopefully will meet loads of you.

You’ve done all the hard work and had all the advice at this stage. You all know what to do.

The one thing I want to add is to SMILE

Smile as you start off and think of how lucky you are to be there. Smile when you go slowly up the hills and smile more when you get to the top. If the going gets tough then smile and you’ll come out the other side of it soon. Enjoy reading the motivational signs, High 5 the kids and use the crowds to help you get over the tough parts. Have a chat to somebody running beside you and that will distract you too.

Have a ball everybody. Can’t wait to see all your reports afterwards.

Thanks mentors and novices- I’ve really enjoyed checking in hourly/daily/min by min to this thread. Such a great resource to have for any first timer.

Any lurkers potentially thinking of a first marathon next year, do it, start now, the training is not impossible!

It’s been an amazing journey with just one more adventure remaining....best of luck all...and I hope that this is the start of many years of marathons for the friends I’ve made on this adventure!

Best of luck to EVERYONE. I hope everyone enjoys the day. Not sure what to do but I’m thinking of following 4.20 pacers... was always going for a time between 4.20 and 4.30... so the ONLY thing that’s making me go for 4.20 is it starts earlier. Is this madness? I don’t want to be standing around for an extra 15 mins if you get me. :)))

So I don't think a pace band is for me for several reasons.

So I've taken the average of the times on the pace band 6.40/km for the first 10km, 6.30/km for the next 20km, and 6.25 for the final 12.2km (plus the extra bit) which if I stick to that brings me in at 4.35.
    Is that too basic?

I also meant to say I'd also be adjusting to pull back on hills and pick it up a little on down hills etc

I personally think this is a good idea. I did one up but don't think I'll wear it - like u thinking ill have an estimate for 10k, half way and 20miles

I can’t remember your times etc now but if they were in the same wave and you would have chosen the 4:30 pacers then I’d either wait for them or else run your own race and don’t try stick with the 4:20 guys. You could burn out very easily by running a bit faster in the first 7 miles especially. Start at the back of the wave and just watch your own pace maybe?

I said this earlier but last year I ran 4:20. I started behind the 4:30 guys but my first mile was at a 4:46 pace. I passed the 4:30 guys out at 11 miles and finished at 4:20 then. If I had gone out with the 4:20 guys I possibly wouldn’t have been able to hang on to them and would have run slower in the end.

Julie2tubz just be prepared to let the 4:20 pacer get away from you. Run your own race/pace and then reel them in slowly if you're able and if not just stick to your 4:25-4:30 pace as best you can.

If you're targeting 4:25 then trying to stick with the 4:20 pacer is going to mean a fast start which isn't advisable in any marathon but especially not in Dublin with the course profile.

I'd advise you to start at 4:35-4:30 pace for the first 7m/11km st least and then slowly & gradually pick up pace if you're able.

    Have a great run x

Just to say a big thank you to the mentors here. This is my 3rd marathon but I still classed myself as a novice as haven't done one for a good few years.
I thought I was well prepared until I got this cold which I am desperately trying to shift. But come hell or high water, I'll be on the starting blocks.
Good luck to all and enjoy every minute as much as is possible - leave the headphones, tech etc at home and embrace the crowd and atmosphere, etc.
All the best. Target time - 1:59:59 :D

I want to say thanks to mentors and all the posters here, some invaluable advice given and hopefully taken on board :)

The table has been filled, the goal set , now it is time to just get it done.

Best of luck to everyone running, I hope everyone runs there own race, enjoys the atmosphere and gets that time that satisfies.

I may see ye for a sneaky pint after it in Mcgrattans, here is hoping I am still fit to chat to people.

At last!!! All this talk of thanks and gratitude is absolutely pointless if it isn't backed up with alcohol!! :pac:

I would of course like to wish ye all the best tomorrow. If you enjoy it, try to enjoy it lots. If it hurts try to keep the hurt to a minimum. ;)

I'd also like to very specially thank all of you who contributed to the thread. The nature of a forum like this makes your input the most important thing. Telling your stories of good training days and bad ones, fast races and unsatisfactory ones all adds to the narrative of the thread. To those of you who have taken the time and shared your journey so far, thanks. It has been a pleasure to follow every step of the way. One step left to do...get out there and have your day to remember. :)

Best of luck to the novices class of 2018, you've the training in the bank now and the conditions look good for racing. Don't forget to take a moment tomorrow morning, if only for a split second crossing the start line to give yourself a serious well done on getting to the start line on DCM day. After that keep the head on the pace front and try enjoy the race even in the tougher spots which all going well won't be until you're well past half way.
I was watching Sean Cox's family on the Late Late last night and his wife mentioned he'd signed up to do the race this year and checking the programme his name is listed there. Poor fella. We're a privileged lot to be able to attempt to do these things, irregardless of what pace you run. Enjoy and run well.

Many thanks to the 3 mentors for all your support and advice. Best of luck with your own races tomorrow.
I've really enjoyed following this thread and the strava group. I'm not sure I would have made the start line without the advice from here and following everyone's progress just gives you the drive needed to get out and do the training.

Best of luck to all tomorrow, look forward to reading all the reports.
