That's perfect for a first marathon! Well done. Hopefully you'll reap the rewards for that approach.

3rd Marathon, but i had an absolute shocker on my 1st, went out too quick, hit the wall hard at 20 miles and died on my arse for the next 6.2 miles swearing i would never run again.

The fear of ever having that happen again probably keeps my targets on the conservative side.....LESSON LEARNED!!! :)

Ha ha!!! 2nd Went pretty well and lasted the course much better and more importantly no wall...some lessons never leave you though.

Goes back to what the mentors have been saying, pace yourself well in the first half and have multiple goals (A, B & C).

Such a great day out and the atmosphere is unreal, Dublin at its finest

In terms of managing pacing, i was planning on using the training function on the garmin setting it at 26.2 and taking off, tie in the pace range suitably wide so it does not be going off all the time. I like to see the mileage go down :)

there was some comments you are likely to rack up a 26.5 or more- would this be the max you might go? Or should i change and just use the regular setting for the run.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,807 ✭✭✭skyblue46

Do whatever you are happy with. A settled mind helps with a settled run. Your Garmin will probably total about 26.4

I'm gonna post this now as tomorrow will be busy with Expo and final preparations for dcm and I don't want to miss my chance here.

Thank you Ariana, Kellygirl and Skyblue so so much. The only reason I got through the training plan was because of your guidance and never ending patience.

At the start of this journey I promised myself that if I made it through the training to the start line on Sunday, I'd make it to the finish line.

You have taught me how to run and I can never thank you enough. Without this amazing novice thread, I'd be rocking up to the starting line unprepared for the challenge ahead and oblivious to it.

    Thank you.

    Let's do this!

Thanks but you have that all wrong. We gave you guidance but without the work you put in it would have been wasted. It was you that did all those early morning runs, you that slowed down when advised it was best, you who got back out after some runs you weren't happy about. The work was all yours!! Brilliant job so far. Now go finish it!!

On a practical note for those in wave 4 before the start - there will be long queues at the first toilets on Herbert Place but keep moving and you will find there are plenty more all the way to Fitzwilliam Street.

So I don't think a pace band is for me for several reasons.

So I've taken the average of the times on the pace band 6.40/km for the first 10km, 6.30/km for the next 20km, and 6.25 for the final 12.2km (plus the extra bit) which if I stick to that brings me in at 4.35.
    Is that too basic?

I also meant to say I'd also be adjusting to pull back on hills and pick it up a little on down hills etc

So with just over twenty four hours to go I would like to thank the mentors and everyone on this thread for all the advice and support during the training. I feel well prepared for the run tomorrow and that is down to all of you. Following the plan and taking your advice on board got me to this point so thanks for that.

I hope everyone has a great run tomorrow and that the final run of the plan is all you hoped it would be. Go smash those goals :)

I'd like to echo Applegirls sentiments above.

skyblue, you are right to an extent that the hard work was done by us but it is also true that - in my case at least- none of it would have happened were it not for the brilliant mentoring we received by the three of you over the last 18 weeks.
Coming into this, I was completely clueless, all I knew was that I wanted to run the Dublin marathon and that was it. Had it not been for the happy accident of finding this thread, I honestly don't know how it would have panned out. I could easily have been one of those runners who pays the ultimate price at mile 20. I'm pretty sure of it.
Thanks to you, ariana and kellygirl, I have learned so many things, and not all of them necessarily running related.

I cannot believe that this time tomorrow, we will be standing in Fitzwilliam St, doing some last minute warm up exercises. Crazy.

The very best of luck to all my fellow novices tomorrow, we'll be deadly!!!!

So thank you again. You are all stars in jars. :D

Nothing is too basic if it works for you. For what it's worth I had a similar strategy last year and i'll be doing the same this year. Don't panic if the first couple of km are slower than 6:40. And don't worry about the final 12.2 (or 12.5 even!) - by then you will be just doing what you're able!!

Ok, i'm getting a train to Dublin in a while so after this i'll be posting on my phone so i'm going to do write my last long one while i have a proper keyboard!

Firstly i want to thank EVERYONE who has contributed on this thread in the past 5 months! All the experienced runners and marathoners who have contributed - i won't start naming names but there have been lots of others who have shared their invaluable advice here.

But mostly i came on today to wish every single one of the 2018 Novice Group the very best of luck tomorrow!

You have each and everyone one of you done the training. Take a moment today if you can to look back on what you have done in the past 18 wks. Trust the training, trust in yourself, back yourself!

If the going gets tough tomorrow remind yourself of the tough runs, the tough races, the day that it really sucked but you kept going! Remind yourself of the sacrifices you made, the wedding you went to where you didn't drink, the holiday you went on where you p*ssed your family off by trying to squeeze in training runs, the nights out you had to pass up on because you had a long run the following morning! Remind yourself of all the weeks where you've tried to eat well (none of us are saints but you did try!) and to sleep well.

I hope you all meet the target time you have set for yourself but more than that i hope you have an amazing experience, i hope you are blown away by the support en route, i hope you feel the most amazing sense of pride in what you have achieved when you cross that line tomorrow!

And let's all remember little Georgia tomorrow who should be celebrating her 5th birthday - whatever happens let's do it for her and for her amazing Mum.

Last two pieces of advice :p

    1. When you're standing in your wave tomorrow waiting to go just remember these two words START SMART
    2. Remember to smile for the camera on the blue mat ;)

    GOOD LUCK, RUN WELL

Just wanted to say good luck to everyone tomorrow! I didn’t make the start line so will have to wait another few weeks to get there but you should all be proud of yourselves for getting this far and just go out and enjoy it tomorrow. I haven’t followed the thread much the last few weeks but will especially be thinking of you @ themadhouse - you are truly amazing

Thank you Ariana, skyblue and kellygirl for all your advice and time you’ve put in to the thread. I think we all will be have a more enjoyable experience tomorrow on the back of what we have learned here.

Best of luck tomorrow. Have my sparkly scrunchie ready and busy making a pace band here before I set off for the expo.

    Thabks for all your help.

Can I ask a final things.

    1. Earphones. Good or bad idea
    2. Long sleeve top. Going by last few days its freezing. Will it be too warm
    3. Clothes at the start. Do you just throw them away. Before you enter the wave or just before start

Earphones aren’t recommended for H&S reasons but besides that the atmosphere is electric the whole way round and there’s more than enough to keep you distracted. Also great to have random chats with other runners etc.

Maybe throw a long sleeve top on over your running top and throw it off when yo I get too hot. You can discard jackets etc at the start line just before you start running. They all go to charity.

Not an expert but I deliberately wore my marathon outfit shorts and T-shirt last night 9pm to see how I got on in the cold. (Don’t worry washed and dried already) Once I started running I was fine, I don’t think base layers or long sleeves are that necessary. I’ve made some arm warmers from knee high socks and have a cheap hat and gloves from Penneys so will dispose of them after the first few miles.

Can I ask a final things.

    1. Earphones. Good or bad idea

    1. Earphones/are not prohibited but they are certainly not recommended, especially by the race organisers. I would definitely say leave them at home.

    2. It certainly has been cold but you may regret long sleeves further into the race when you start to warm up, unless you had a race t-shirt on underneath and were happy to discard your outer layer.
I think what's important is to keep warm up until the start of the race and then discard any layers you don't mind leaving behind before you set off.

    3. I'm not too sure if you can discard them once you enter your wave. I would imagine you can though? Someone else might be able to answer this......
