There's no way there will be free movement after Brexit if the UK don't remain in the single market, the garlic importers would take the piss.

No one will go near them, smell it a mile away :D

Now that's a great man. John Hume, not Tommy.

Nothing against Tommy btw, he did try his best to persuade Roy Keane to go back to the Irish squad in the 2002 World Cup.

    Very good section.

Would have liked a bit of fleshing out on the personalities... Mo Mowlam, David Ervine, Billy Hutchinson, John Taylor (who was very magnanimous in his comments to Bertie after his mam's death), David Trimble. Good but could have been better.

    Ray running for President?

Sure wasn't Uncle Gaybo himself briefly the favourite for the presidency once upon a time until he decided he didn't want it?

    https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/i-dont-want-to-be-president-gay-byrne-pulls-out-of-race-26761079.html

GAY BYRNE announced today that he will not be a candidate for the Presidency.

The veteran broadcaster told Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin that he did not want to put his name forward in the election for the Aras.

The decision, just before 1pm, ended mounting speculation about his intentions and will come as welcome news to the other candidates - especially Labour's Michael D. Higgins and Fine Gael's Gay Mitchell who were both beaten in polls by him.

Mr Byrne told RTE that he had made the decision after consulting with his family and because he did not believe he was what the Irish people were looking for in a President.

He said he had been overwhelmed by the messages of loyalty, support and regard as well as offers of practical help, but the run at the Aras had been foisted on him before he knew what it would involve.

Miriam O'Callaghan helped John to Ireland's Greatest Ever Person in 2009! Beating off stiff competition from the late Stephen Gately of Boyzone in 9th.. bizarre stuff.

I wonder who would be the more acceptable choice for President...Bertie who was instrumental in ending years of murder and maiming on the island of Ireland, but with questions over how the Celtic economy was mishandled and if someone bribed him by building his conservatory etc...

Or. The black priest from Father Ted.

Hume is a true man of peace. If he ever ran for president of Ireland, he'd win it with ease.

I said it at the time and I'll say it again. There will be a hard border and the EU will tell the Irish tax payer to pay for the EU's share of it.

History will recall Bertie's achievement's with the Peace process favourably i feel.

It dwarfs his financial faults. And he was no Charlie Haughey with regards to the level of corruption.

If he does run again, I hope he'll be unopposed. Nobody has a hope of beating him, so any contest would just be an undignified circus for misguided twats like Gerard Craughwell and Dana.
