Waking up to some potentially serious breaking news. Israeli warplanes are attacking Syria and have attacked Iranian targets. One Israeli plane is reported to have been shot down.

    Sky and BBC reporting this...

Israel saying they were responding to an Iranian drone coming into contact with an Israeli helicopter. It's not clear whether this occurred over Israeli airspace. Presumably it did leading to the Israeli response.

Have Israeli warplanes struck Iranian warplanes in Syria before?

Nothing really serious about it to be honest. They attack Syria quite regularly. The plane came down in Israel with the pilots ejected before it crashed.

This sounds pretty Syrias actually, don't mind the guy above me.

If it was shot down, probably the first IDF jet lost in a good while. Probably for the best that the pilots were over Israeli territory when they ejected.

Would you believe anything out of the Israelis..

Bibi Netanyahu would probably enjoy a distraction, Syria might offer him one.

Pretty regular occurrence at this stage ,the only new suprise is the loss of an Israeli aircraft as pointed out above is the first in a long time ,
What comes next is the great unknown,

I'd expect a large scale assault taking out any and all anti air batteries belonging to Assad and Iran at some stage

They've been doing this frequently for the last several years.

You should go back to sleep before you find out that the Falklands were invaded in 82.

All war is serious. And lets us not forget Russian forces are inside Syria now and Isreal could easily kill Russians by mistake. The plane was shot down while under fire. Isreal is playing a dangerous game. You don't see Iran and Syria sending fighter jets into Isreal to attack targets.

Yes because they both know that you choose your battles.

Iran isn't going to send in it's F-14s into Israel for the simple reason that not one of them would return.

Point is Isreal is making moves again Iran and Syria. If they wanted those countries could easily attack Isreal with ease. Iranians have cruise missiles. Just saying we don't need another war in the middle east.

You really believe Syria and Iran could attack Israel with ease?

This isn't going to escalate into more than an incident. Israel will respond with more air strikes, then pull back.

You forget the Lebanon vs Isreal war in 2006. Isreal sustained heavy losses was the reason they retreated. Hezbollah was successful was the Iranians supplied them with better weaponry to fight with. Iranians have modernised their army capabilities in the last decade, they have missile capability to hit Isreal.

I not saying it will escalate, but there is always a chance it will when you got different countries killing each other soldiers on the ground.

The anti-aircraft batteries that shot down the Isreal jet are operated by Russians and Syrians at the Kheimim air base. Isreal was to go nuts and hit the Kheimim base, the likely kill Russian personnel. Of course, Isreal could warn ahead of time, but the element of surprise is no longer there for the attack.

No I dont. Your statement was Iran and Syria attacking Israel, not Lebanese Hezbollah.

And the point I'm making is that is not going to happen as a result of this shooting down.

A war with Iran will involve Lebanon, I think you know this? What makes this different we don't know if Russians fired on the Isreali jet. There is a lot we don't know any this time. Isreal has attacked since this downing of the plane and carried out more strikes inside Syria. It could end abruptly or could escalate to a wider conflict, we have to wait and see.

This is terrible the Kurds and Turks can't sort out their differences, but this conflict is not really a threat to global peace. A war involving Iran and Isreal is dangerous as it potentially can drag in world powers.

You don't see Iran and Syria sending fighter jets into Isreal to attack targets.

There is a simple reason why ,

They haven't got the aircraft or weapons to fly into Israeli airspace to mount an attack ,
They also know that Israel would wipe out both Assads and Irans airforces in a counter strike

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

I noticed that we got no mention of the US strikes against pro Assad militias the other day that tried to attack American backed force's , between 100 and 500 pro assad forces were killed

The Americans have bombed pro Assad forces for encroaching on their position in the past. An Israeli jet being shot down is a first for this century.

Yes, they do have, the refuelling of jets is the problem. Iran to Israel is a long distance to travel. If they stationed Iranian fighters in Syria this would reduce the flight time. Iran knows Israel would target those planes if they stationed them there.

Anything to do with Erdogan invading Syria? Or perhaps the ISIS terrorists? I'm not aware of the details of the issue the post is about, but there seems to be scant awareness of the invasion by Erdogan, on Boards

They are domestically producing modern fighter aircraft now Qaher F-313 stealth fighter jet and F35 fighter jet. I never said they beat the Israeli fighters in an air battle. They do have aircraft that can hit Israel targets.

The Astana agreement led Turkey, Iran and Russia to be guaranturs of various "de-escalation" zones throughout Syria.

Part of Turkeys responsibility was to establish and monitor the Idlib/Aleppo de-escalation zone by building watch towers and placing Turkish troops on the ground in northern Idlib.

This strategic move seems to have been a well thought out premptive ploy by Erdogan to ensure that the Kurds could not manoeuvre anywhere once Erdogan launched his offensive in the Afrin Canton. The Kurds are boxed in with nowhere to go.

These Israeli airstrikes have nothing to do with the situation up north. Israel has consistently warned all regional players that any Iranian or Shiite presence near Israeli territory will not be tolerated. Despite this, there is quite a large Iranian presence in southern Syria.

The Israeli airstrike in itself is not a big deal, the Syrian/Iranian response by accurately targeting and downing an Israeli jet is significant. Its the first time in 30 years that it has happened.

Israel regularly carries out airstirkes in Syria and Syria regularly uses anti aircraft weapons on the jets but they never usually hit them.

The question of escalation is the worry over the next 24hrs.

Stealth is not new technology it two decades old. Iran is building stealth aircraft how good the planes are operationally who can say?

It was Romans nailed him to the cross and it was his buddy Judas allegedly betrayed him. Jewish people did not kill him. Of course, who can say if he ever truly lived?
