They opened their centre during storm ophelia too. I didn't realise that. Media didn't pick that up for some reason.

    Bahahahaaha! :)

I've seen guys from some local mosques serving soup and giving out blankets or ferrying homeless to community centres in London during cold spells. Good people come in all creeds and sizes.

Jokes on you guys, there are no homeless people in clonskeagh :)

No, they set up homless shelters, charities and try to get focus on the homeless crises.

Fr. Peter McVerry does great work in this area. As do the monks who run the soup kitchens.

I mean, I'm no fan of the Catholic Church (or even Islam) but they actually do do quite a bit for the homeless. Quite a lot more than the Government or even a lot of private charities do actually.

Catholic organisations have been catering for the poor and destitute in Ireland for centuries?

The Capuchin day centre and crosscare to name just two, why not educate yourself to the selfless work many in the Catholic church perform for the homeless before posting ignorant claims.

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

I remember hearing about it during storm Ophelia. Some businesses did it and then the Clonskeagh centre did it.

^ Not for one minute suggesting they only did it because the businesses did it first. Just giving the timeline of events as I remember them.

Thank you children ... now if we can put the catholic v muslim and who help the homeless more argument to bed that would be great.

The thing is, if we brought the people running this homeless thing in clonskeagh and the guys who run the catholic thing, the last thing they would think of doing is digging a 'we help out more' into the other. Yet people on an online forum who one can presume for the most part aren't involved in either think it's fair game

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,862 ✭✭✭✭January

Sorry let me rephrase it. I know Catholic organisations do run centres and soup runs etc and fabulous work they do too.

I'm talking about them opening the doors of the churches themselves in local communities in times of crisis such as ophelia and when there are severe weather warnings in place.

I'm baffled as to why you believe this is a safe presumption, but speaking for myself I can tell you you're wrong.

What do the mosque's neighbours think of this gesture? How many people does it have planning permission to accommodate?

    Fair play to them.

Be even better if they laid on a mini bus to bring the homeless from areas like the city centre out to clonskeagh.

Would take a pretty heartless council to stop them. The place is quite big, the main prayer hall could sleep hundreds comfortably. And there are other rooms off it if there is some kind of religious rule banning sleeping in the main section.

well done to them for opening up.

Deserve praise and credit where it's due. Respect.

better then some of our buck's in Government right now. not that they care

A quick Google found that St Patrick's Church in Belfast did just that. I'm sure there were other examples.

Fair play. A really nice gesture and hopefully it'll help the most vulnerable during this cold snap

Exploiting vulnerable people while improving their PR image. It's the same tactics the Church of Scientology employ when their proselytising. No good intentions here at all, just looking for converts and to improve their rep.

The beds they're providing are called "Cold Weather Initiave " beds.
Most services for homeless roughsleepers provide them when's a cold snap overseen by the Central Placement Services and DRHE.
No intent or plans to convert.

do you make the same accusations against the salvation army?
Do you know that they are actually proselytising or is that just your prejudice?

It is indeed a notable gesture they have made, I for one dont believe this is the thread to raise the other more unsavoury aspects regarding Clonskeagh.

However this thread was derailed two posts in by someone making a Christianaphobic claim which was quickly proven as false.

It certainly is a shame that every thread with even a hint of Islam in the topic descends into scurrilous whataboutery regarding Catholicism.

Can't believe people are so naive, what price do you think there is for them taking homeless in ?
You don't think they will get much converts because of this ?
When people are at low points, they see something like this as destiny and feel obliged to give something back.

I read an article about homelessness in san Francisco. There's a huge church there that sleeps 5the homeless during the day. It's because most homeless people tend to stay awake at night and during the day if they stop anywhere the police do them for loitering.

To be fair, all the big religions can demonstrate that they've done a lot to help the needy. The Red Cross and Red Crescent are two great examples.

I have issues with religion in general but I do recognise that some of their adherents are inspired to do selfless acts.
